If you ask me, 1979’s #NightInTheRuts is easily the most underrated #Aerosmith album of the classic period - sure, it’s not a patch on #GetYourWings, #ToysInTheAttic, or #Rocks but it is a big, shot-in-the-bicep improvement over #DrawTheLine thanks to a tougher production and a handful of semi-precious gemstones like #CheeseCake, #Chiquita, #NoSurprize, and #BoneToBone; all of which deserve to be dusted off and added back into radio rotation. The cover of #TheShangriLas song #Remember is kinda cool too even if the original has been tainted by ten million TikTok users. 😒 But, yeah - this is just a good, solid Aerosmith spin and one that I think gets disregarded and/or overlooked due to the fact that the band was falling apart and there were no major hit singles. #GetYourWings lit the fuse, #ToysInTheAttic was the explosion, and #Rocks is the fiery aftermath; a white-hot, back-street shoot-em-up stuffed to the seams with sordid tales from life on the wild side. Nobody sounded quite like #Aerosmith in 1976 but it sure seemed like every hard-rock band on the planet was borrowing from them 10 years later. Tell me the guys in #Tesla weren’t inspired by #LastChild or that #AxlRose wasn’t listening to #Combination on repeat. As amazing and as groundbreaking as “Toys In The Attic” is, this one edges it out for me thanks to heavier production values, nastier lyrics, and a much darker worldview that pushes the band closer to heavy-metal than anything before or since. #BackInTheSaddle kicks through the bat-wings and sets the stage for an urban-gunslinger atmosphere that permeates the entire package. I can totally imagine the band riding into some dusty town, Perry and Whitford exchanging live rounds with the law, Kramer’s drums exploding in the air overhead, and Tyler yowling in pain as he’s pelted by shrapnel. It’s total rock-n-roll warfare and for someone like me who was pretty much baptized on the band’s MTV hits, I was shocked to hear how raw and dangerous they sounded on monster cuts like #NobodysFault, #RatsInTheCellar, #LickAndAPromise, and #SickAsADog. You can skip the debut and you can skip #GetYourWings (although I wouldn’t) but you really can’t justify skipping this one or #Rocks; they are as vital to a collection as anything from Zeppelin, Sabbath, Purple, and Van Halen. This is where the band’s philosophy really took shape in terms of writing and musicianship and it also marked the point where #StevenTyler stepped into his own as a vocalist and frontman. What the guys achieved here (and on the next one) became the blueprint for their multi-Platinum makeover 10 years later. #UncleSalty could be seen as a thematic cousin to #JaniesGotAGun, #NoMoreNoMore shares DNA with #TheOtherSide, and you can trace a direct line of lineage from #YouSeeMeCrying to later hit ballads like #Angel, #WhatItTakes, and well, #Cryin. The track Spaced is a special favourite of mine - an atmospheric and eccentric rock song about an odyssey through space (...or a bad drug trip?) Get Your Wings (1974) is the band's semaphore record and we already get to hear the typical style of the band. The cool boogie groove of Same Old Song And Dance is unique, the psychedelic power of Lord Of The Thighs never grows old. As I said in my previous post, #GetYourWings is where #Aerosmith truly takes flight for me; it’s the first of three classics to be produced by #JackDouglas and the first to introduce that low-slung sweet-n-sour sleaze sound that made these dudes forever famous. #SameOldSongAndDance is legendary (albeit a bit overplayed) but for me it’s all about down-and-dirty deep cuts like #SOS, #LordOfTheThighs (we know what #JeffKeith was listening to as a teenager 😏), #WomanOfTheWorld, #Spaced, and especially atmospheric chiller #SeasonsOfWither - a harrowing and totally ahead-of-its-time soul-stirrer that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a #Soundgarden, #AliceInChains, or #SmashingPumpkins record twenty years later. I wish the radio played this one as much as they do #DreamOn because I think it’s far superior. Anyway, this record rocks front to back and is a major leap forward from the debut in every way possible - a fact that never ceases to amaze me considering that it was released just a year later. I consider myself to be a fairly big #Aerosmith fan which means I’m not one of those people who only likes their 70s work or who thinks they went to shit in the 90s. I actually dig most of the catalog; from the ballsy, meat-and-potatoes rockers to the flashy, big-city anthems to the mushy, MTV-polished power ballads. That said, the band’s 1973 debut has never really done much for me aside from obvious classics like #MamaKin, #WalkinTheDog, and #DreamOn - a heady haunter I must have heard hundreds of times on the radio as a kid but one that didn’t mean a thing to me until I started aging. “Every time that I look in the mirror, all these lines on my face, getting clearer. The past is gone.” Well ain’t that the cold, hard truth? As far as the rest of this album goes I find it to be mostly faceless and out-dated due to a boring, on-the-cheap production that offers little to no hint of the fireworks show to come just one year later.
