18 month sleep regression 🐻 Wake Windows: 4 - 6 hours Naps a day: 1 Total daytime (nap) sleep: 1-3 hours Total sleep over 24 hours: 11-14 hours 18 mo is a period of immense physical and mental development, however during these periods often impact sleep. Sometimes it shows up as difficulty settling to sleep for nap and bedtime and/or more overnight wakes. So what to do: 🌿 Lots of opportunities to move, practice new skills 🌿 Lots of 1:1 time in the evening leading up to bedtime 🌿 Extend wake windows if trouble falling to sleep within 10-20 minutes 🌿 Establish clear, consistent & loving boundaries throughout the day 🌿 Allow opportunity to make choices where possible, eg blue tshirt or red tshirt today? 🌿 Diet high in protein and iron 🌿 Epsom salt bath to increase magnesium 🌿 Allow time for a consistent bedtime routine, with calm 1:1 connection time Save this post for when you need it 🤍 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Despite our best attempts to line up activities/appointments with awake time, there are times they don’t align, so what to do? Here are two options for you 🐻 🌿 Split the nap Have part of the nap (usually one sleep cycle) before the activity/appointment so they are not stretching their wake window so they won't be overtired of sleep through the activity by: Plan the travel time to/from the destination as two shorter naps (in car, strolled, carrier etc.) OR Arrive early and stay later to go for a walk to support two naps 🌿 Bridge the nap Support a short 15-minute power nap before the activity so they can stay awake until after the activity/appointment. This is more helpful if a nap is due towards the end of the activity/appointment and they don't have adequate sleep pressures for a longer nap before. 🤍 Children are adaptable. Activities and appointments are important for you and for them. Adjust the next nap or bedtime as needed. Focus on achieving overall daytime/nap sleep, rather than usual nap times/duration. Save this post 📌 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Habits can be a blessing and a curse. If you find yourself with a habit that’s maybe not so great (I’m looking at you, sitting on the couch watching Netflix when you could be doing other shit!) Take these steps ⬇️ 1️⃣ Firstly, don’t beat yourself up too much. A lot of the time shitty habits come from a space where we had to survive and “numb out” for a bit. This may require a little more work than just wondering where it came from, as a lot of the time coping mechanisms that we have are there for a reason. So when you try to shift a habit, your brain will not love it. 2️⃣ Secondly, ask yourself “What would I like to do instead” 3️⃣ Thirdly, you need to look at the new habit you’d like to replace it with and figure out what are some potential barriers that could prevent this habit (e.g. if you have to drive 45 minutes to the gym instead of vegging AND you’re not really that excited at the prospect, you’re probably not going to do it) You might not even NEED to replace it, can you use your Netflix time to also fold washing or something else equally as exciting? Repeat your new habit again and again until it becomes your new habit. Voila. 👏🏼 Need help kicking shitty habits to the curb? DM me and let’s chat about how I can help. #SleepConsultant #MomLife #ParentingJourney #MindsetGuru #RefluxStruggles #ColicSolutions #BabySleepTips #MotherhoodInspired #SleepTrainingSuccess #FamilyWellness #MumLifeBalance #HolisticParenting #NewbornStruggles #ParentingSupport #EmpoweredMotherhood #SleepSolutions #BabySleep #SleepingThroughTheNight #GentleSleepTraining #NoCrySleepMethod #ParentingRealities #BabySleepPatterns #MumOfThree #SleepingSoundly #BabySleepHelp #MompreneurLife #ParentingWellness #FamilySleepGoals

Do you know why systems and processes just work? It’s because our brains are designed to notice patterns. When they find them, they store them in the subconscious and instead of it being an “I don’t even know where to start” it just does it. A habit is simply a behaviour that is repeated over and over again until it becomes a subconscious program. Your brain LOVES this shit, it froths this shit. And there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel, you can bet that if you’re struggling with it, someone else has already created a system around it. You can take that and tailor it to your life until you are a well oiled machine 🙌🏼 Do you have a habit hack that changed your life? #SleepConsultant #MomLife #ParentingJourney #MindsetGuru #RefluxStruggles #ColicSolutions #BabySleepTips #MotherhoodInspired #SleepTrainingSuccess #FamilyWellness #MumLifeBalance #HolisticParenting #NewbornStruggles #ParentingSupport #EmpoweredMotherhood #SleepSolutions #BabySleep #SleepingThroughTheNight #GentleSleepTraining #NoCrySleepMethod #ParentingRealities #BabySleepPatterns #MumOfThree #SleepingSoundly #BabySleepHelp #MompreneurLife #ParentingWellness #FamilySleepGoals

Sleep hormones do you understand how these work? If you don’t you’re missing out on a real shortcut to predicting how your kiddo will sleep. Let’s go through the main ones: 🔆 Melatonin - this is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness. This is like the starting gun of a race, it triggers your brain to start the race to sleep. 🔆 Serotonin - a “happy” hormone, also secreted by the pineal gland. This is a precursor to melatonin and is necessary to create a good amount of the sleep hormone. Exposure to bright light, exercise & a good diet are all good ways to get this bad boy going. 🔆 Adrenaline - a hormone that is released in response to stress OR if you have been awake too long. Ever seen your kiddo go from absolutely wrecked to wired like they’ve just drunk 40 cups of coffee? That’s adrenaline. 🔆 Cortisol - the stress hormone, but also melatonin’s natural counterpart, this hormone is known as the “wakeful” hormone and allows us to wake refreshed. Fun fact, it’s also a natural painkiller. We go through this and loads more in THSP where I teach YOU (not your baby!) how to improve your family's rest WITHOUT leaving your baby to cry alone. Gain the know-how and resources to improve your baby’s sleep, gain confidence and handle ANY sleep hiccups on your timeline. Sound like a FUCK YES? Supporting a balance between screen time and sleep 🌿 You likely already know extended screen time can disrupt sleep. Here are some tips to make bedtime a screen free zone. 🤍 Exposure to blue light from screens can reduce production of melatonin and disrupt circadian rhythm 🤍 You know your child best, some handle screen time better than others 🤍 Some children’s shows are particularly fast paced and stimulating 🤍 Be thoughtful with timing and type of screen time used Have a balanced amount of screen time 🤍 Alter settings on tablets/cell phones to use darker setting to limit blue light exposure 🤍 No screen time two hours before bedtime 🤍 Focus on calming and connecting activities before bed 🤍 Lead by example and during wind down/bedtime routine, put phones away Save this post for your next bedtime 🐻 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

It’s normal for most kids to still feed overnight until they’re at least 1, but a lot will still have a feed overnight beyond this age. If you’re happy to keep feeding, go nuts, if you’re not let’s try to ditch them 👇🏼 🤱🏻 Breastfeeding - start by timing the feed then popping baby off 2 mins earlier at a time and rocking/cuddling/patting back to sleep. 🍼 If bottle feeding - cut the bottle back by 30ml every 2-3 days until it starts impacting their sleep e.g. If you give 90ml and they go back to sleep and sleep til morning, but you give 60ml and they wake up every 2 hours until morning, go back to 90ml for a week then try again. 📌 Save this post for when you need it #SleepConsultant #MomLife #ParentingJourney #MindsetGuru #RefluxStruggles #ColicSolutions #BabySleepTips #MotherhoodInspired #SleepTrainingSuccess #FamilyWellness #MumLifeBalance #HolisticParenting #NewbornStruggles #ParentingSupport #EmpoweredMotherhood #SleepSolutions #BabySleep #SleepingThroughTheNight #GentleSleepTraining #NoCrySleepMethod #ParentingRealities #BabySleepPatterns #MumOfThree #SleepingSoundly #BabySleepHelp #MompreneurLife #ParentingWellness #FamilySleepGoals

One-on-One Quality Time 🤍 Many toddler bedtime battles emerge as this becomes the only time of day they get one-on-one time with their parents and they don't want it to end!! So instead you build in consistent one on one time earlier in the day to help fill their love tank! One-on-one time with your toddler would be 10-15 minutes spent with just them and one parent. Ideally, the child chooses an activity. It can be as simple as taking a walk together, snuggling on the couch or reading a story. The value of each One-on-One time builds as the routine continues. One-on-one time is quality time. This means that they get your undivided attention. You make good eye contact, you are not distracted or multitasking and your devices are turned off. Children crave the undivided attention of their parents. One-on-one time is most effective as a daily routine. 🐻 Benefits include: 🤍 It communicates to them how important they are to you 🤍 They will open up more easily to you 🤍 Learn social skills 🤍 It reduces stress in their life 🤍 This connection with adults builds resilience 🤍 Reduces sibling rivalry 🤍 Sometimes, unexpected things happen that create a special bond between you and them 🤍 Reduces separation anxiety 🤍 You fill their LOVE tank Save this post for the future 🌿 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

From the ‘Power of Showing up’’ by Dan Diegel and Tina Payne-Bryson 🤍 The benefits of a secure attachment between parent and child is endless. The Four S’s lay the foundation for a secure attachment: Safe, Seen, Soothed & Secure Sleep Support should always include elements that encourage and build upon secure attachment SAFE 🌿 Supporting our children to be and feel safe. Making the commitment that you won’t be a source of fear for your child. Importance of reconnecting after a disagreement and apologising if you’re the one in the wrong. Work to provide your child with a sense that home is a haven. SEEN 🌿 Children who feel ‘seen’ have a sense they are acknowledged. As a caregiver, you can help a child feel seen by taking the time to understand what they may be going through and to learn who they are. SOOTHED 🌿 ‘Soothed’ children are comforted and not only during emotional moments. Caregivers focus on helping the child develop healthy coping strategies for challenging times in their lives. Encouraging children through the acronym PEACE: Presence, Engagement, Affection, Calm & Empathy SECURE 🌿 Cultivating a sense of security and trust between caregivers and children. This is often the case when caregivers consistently show up for their little ones in the other 3 S’s. Encouraging children to understand and be unafraid of their emotions and recognise those in others. They can be vulnerable, make mistakes, and voice their opinions without fear of punishment or rejection. Save this post to refer back to 🐻 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Sleep is regulated by two main mechanisms: circadian rhythm and homeostatic sleep drive (sleep pressure). Sleep pressure is built by time awake. As your baby grows, they need MORE time awake in order to fall asleep. Especially over the first year of life, this time awake needs constant changing. 🐻 So always be curious and don’t be afraid to experiment. There are 4 common signs that can be a sign that you need to increase their awake time: 🌿 Consistently taking longer and longer for your baby to fall asleep (e.g. 20min +) 🌿 Naps are shorter or are being refused 🌿 Multiple night wakings 🌿 Early Rising Save this post for when you need it 🤍 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Total Sleep: 13-15 hours per 24 hours. ✨ Nighttime Sleep: Bedtime: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm This is a typical range, but some babies may do well with an earlier or later bedtime depending on their individual needs. Night sleep duration: 10-12 hours Ideally, your baby will sleep through the night without waking for feedings or diaper changes. 🔆 Daytime Naps: Number of naps: 2 naps per day This is the most common pattern for 12-month-olds, but some babies may transition to one nap earlier or later. Nap 1: Ideally around 9:30 am - 11:00 am This should be the longer nap, lasting 1-2 hours. Nap 2: Ideally around 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm This is typically a shorter nap, lasting 30-60 minutes. 🔆 Wake Windows: Wake windows are the time your baby stays awake comfortably between naps and bedtime. At 12 months, they typically need 3.25-4 hours of awake time before getting cranky and needing a nap. Need help with your kiddos sleep? Teething impacts every baby differently. Those on the more sensitive side will likely have their sleep disrupted by the discomfort of teething. 🐻 Around 3/4mo a baby's salivary glands develop so there is often excessive drooling as well as start to explore their world by their mouth, often resulting in parents thinking their baby is starting to teeth. However average age to start teething is 6mo of age. Teething often gets blamed for sleep changes. However, each tooth coming through only causes discomfort for 3-7 days. Signs of Teething: 🌿 Raised gums with white tooth bumps 🌿 Excessive drooling 🌿 Rosey cheeks 🌿 Fussy behaviour 🌿 Sleep changes 🌿Not interested in eating/drinking Not signs of teething: 🐻 Fever 🐻 Diarrhea/vomiting 🐻 Rash 🐻 Runny nose What can you do to support your little one during this time: 🤍 Baby wear 🤍 Try different temperatures: some babies love cold teething toys, and some may prefer a warm washcloth to chew on 🤍 Rub their gums with a clean finger 🤍 Speak with your family doctor if you want to try pain medication 🤍 Lots of cuddles and extra attention 🤍 More frequent nursing 🤍 Offer the pacifier if they use one Save this post for when your little one is teething 🌿 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Through Alexander Thomas and Stella Chess's research, it was found that temperament is influenced by nine temperament traits. These common traits can help describe a child’s temperament and the way they react to and experience the world. 🤍 🌿 Activity level 🌿 Regularity 🌿 Adaptability 🌿 Distractibility 🌿 Sensitivity 🌿 Persistence 🌿 Intensity 🌿 Approachability 🌿 Mood Then from these nine traits, three main temperaments (personality) types were identified by Thomas & Chess. 🐻 Easy-Going: As the name suggests, these children are generally easygoing, have a happy positive disposition and go with the flow. They are quick to fall into eat and sleep routines, and quick to adapt to new situations. 🐻 Spirited: These children are generally more fussy, easily overstimulated, and can cry more often. They have a harder time adapting to new situations and don't regularly follow predictable eat and sleep routines. 🐻 Slow-to-warm: children who are ‘slow to warm up’ adapt slowly and can react negatively, but also show a low intensity in their emotional reactions. They are often labelled as shy, often are less active and enjoy a predictable routine. Save this post to refer to 🤍 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Unpopular opinion: it’s not your job to stop your child from crying ❌ Hear me out before you get out your pitchforks! As kids, a lot of the time we were sent away when we cried. That’s enough, go to your room, stop crying” etc. This has caused us to feel unsafe whenever we see strong “negative” emotions being released - I don’t know about you, but up until recently I was deeply uncomfortable whenever someone cried, got really angry or showed other emotions (kinda had to get over that in this line of work!) 😉 So, when our kids cry, it actually triggers that fight or flight within us. Because we’re all about breaking cycles and gentle parenting, instead of sending our kids away, we’ve gone the opposite way and tried to shut them up as quickly as possible by loving on them. Nicer way? Probably? Helpful though? It’s still giving repressed emotions if you ask me What we WANT to do is hold space for our kiddos, but not rush to stop the flow of emotions. 🔆 “I can see you’re upset and I’m right here with you” 🔆 “Your emotions are not too much for me (even though they areeeee), you’re safe” 🔆 “I love you when you’re angry, sad, happy or laughing” Next time your babe is losing their ever loving shit about something, check in with yourself and try to figure out where it feels in your body. Then focus on breathing through it. This shows your kiddo how to self regulate AND allows them to process their emotions over getting the pink cup instead of the green one 🤪 #SleepConsultant #MomLife #ParentingJourney #MindsetGuru #RefluxStruggles #ColicSolutions #BabySleepTips #MotherhoodInspired #SleepTrainingSuccess #FamilyWellness #MumLifeBalance #HolisticParenting #NewbornStruggles #ParentingSupport #EmpoweredMotherhood #SleepSolutions #BabySleep #SleepingThroughTheNight #GentleSleepTraining #NoCrySleepMethod #ParentingRealities #BabySleepPatterns #MumOfThree #SleepingSoundly #BabySleepHelp #MompreneurLife #ParentingWellness #FamilySleepGoals

This method allows babies to get used to letting go of a sleep association in manageable chunks of time. 🤍 An example of how to use this method would be trying to move on from rocking. Take breaks from rocking for increasing periods and resume when your baby becomes upset or fussy. This can start with just pausing for a few seconds! As they get used to the idea that you will begin rocking again even though it has stopped, you can increase the gaps in between rocking. Eventually, over time you will be able to eliminate this as a sleep association. 🐻 What sleep associations for your little one have? 🤍 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Keep reading because I am about to give you the game-changer for tantrums. If you’re like me and have little kids in the house, I don’t need to explain this one! Here’s the thing, when we try to control our babies' emotions, we really quickly find out that it’s a one-way road to “I suck at parenting” town. 🫠 The BIGGEST game changer for me has been working on MY emotional regulation - really! When I’m calm, so are my kids (well, more so anyway). When I know the difference between their emotions and mine, I’m able to regulate them way faster. When I’m not taking their emotions personally, they throw less tantrums When I’m not thrown into fight or flight every time they backchat me, I can gently and calmly guide them to be a good fkn human. One of the most commonly referenced resources for safe bed sharing is La Leche League International’s ‘Safe Sleep Seven’ criteria. 🌿 You fit the Safe Sleep Seven criteria if you are… 🤍 A nonsmoker 2. 🤍 Sober and unimpaired 3. 🤍 A breastfeeding mother and your baby is: 4. 🤍 Healthy and full-term 5. 🤍 On their back 6. 🤍 Lightly dressed …and you both are 7. 🤍 On a safe surface Bedsharing is a complex issue that may occur intentionally or unintentionally. Evidence supports that healthy, term-breasted infants who share a bed with a caregiver are not at increased risk for sudden, unexpected infant death syndrome during sleep in the absence of pre-existing vulnerabilities and exogenous stressors. In many jurisdictions, recent public health safe sleep messaging has adopted a harm-reduction approach to help support the increased number of families choosing to bedshare as the rate of bedsharing is on the rise. I strongly encourage all parents to learn how to bed share safely, even if you don’t plan on doing it. Additional advice: 🌿 Bedsharing should never occur on a sofa, armchair, pillow or other unsafe sleep surfaces 🌿 When bedsharing, ensure the mattress is firm, is on the floor to reduce the risk of falls and the infant is far away from any pillows and duvets/blankets. 🌿 Memory foam mattresses, air mattresses and pillow-top mattresses are not recommended,as they may increase the potential for suffocation. 🌿 When bedsharing, ensure there is space around the bed so the infant cannot get trapped between the mattress and the wall. 🌿 When bedsharing, parents/caregivers who are not breastfeeding the infant should be aware that the infant is in bed and should be comfortable with this decision. Save this post to come back to 🤍 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

I encourage my clients to live their lives as close to normal as possible so that we can see where our limits are - some kids DO need to stay at home a little more and some just need to catch up on sleep/get some routine in their lives and you can have that on the go life you crave. It’s important to know YOUR child’s limits though, you can’t shove a square peg into a round hole. If you’re unsure as to whether you have an on the go kid or one that isn’t, pay attention to - naps out and about, are they as good? Nights after big days - do they crash or are they up all night? Mood - do they struggle as the day goes on if they don’t get as good sleep? Want a baby sleep myth busted?

Hi! I'm Emma, the expert behind Em Sleep Consulting. As a parent myself, I know how crucial sleep is for functioning well. When my son was born, I prioritized sleep, mainly because I knew I needed it to be my best self. My son ended up loving to sleep, and this experience inspired me to help other families have this same experience. I became certified in baby and toddler sleep consulting through The Family Sleep Institute. During the course, I learned about the benefits of sleep for both parents and children. Did you know memories are consolidated during sleep, and naps are crucial for mental and physical restoration? My goal as a sleep consultant is to empower families to be well-rested so that they can enjoy important moments fully. Some babies are like, "Yo, I'm tired, check me out!" and others are like secret agents with their sleepy vibes. These sneaky ones? Man, they play it cool until it's too late, and then bam! Overtired city, here we come. 😩 So, if your little one is low-key with the sleepy signals, it's smart to stick to their age-appropriate awake time. Keep an eye on the clock and swoop in for that nap when it's time. Trust me, it'll save you from the naptime drama. Now, your baby might drop hints that it's time to catch some Z's, like tugging on those tiny ears, rubbing their eyes like they just watched a tearjerker, making fists like a little champ, staring into space, or doing some funky arm and leg moves. Watch out for that frowning red brow line, too. That's a dead giveaway. But here's the deal - if you miss the signs and your kiddo is already in the overtired zone, it's like a full-blown baby meltdown. Tears, the whole shebang. They might cry, be a pain to calm down, pull a Matrix move arching their back, resist falling asleep, or pull a ninja nap of only 30-45 minutes. False starts, waking up every two hours overnight, or being up at the crack of dawn ready to party – that's the overtired aftermath, my friend. 📌 Save this post so you can FBI what’s going on #SleepConsultant #MomLife #ParentingJourney #MindsetGuru #RefluxStruggles #ColicSolutions #BabySleepTips #MotherhoodInspired #SleepTrainingSuccess #FamilyWellness #MumLifeBalance #HolisticParenting #NewbornStruggles #ParentingSupport #EmpoweredMotherhood #SleepSolutions #BabySleep #SleepingThroughTheNight #GentleSleepTraining #NoCrySleepMethod #ParentingRealities #BabySleepPatterns #MumOfThree #SleepingSoundly #BabySleepHelp #MompreneurLife #ParentingWellness #FamilySleepGoals

Babies typically have their longest stretch of sleep at the beginning of the night but then come 3 am they wake up more frequently and find it harder to settle back to sleep. This is so normal. But why does this happen: 🐻 🤍 Melatonin: Levels will peak in the middle of the night and then begin to drop continuously in the early hours of the morning. 🤍 Sleep Pressure: The more sleep you have the lower sleep pressure you have, so as morning approaches sleep pressure lowers. So staying asleep is harder as is falling back asleep after waking. 🤍 Sleep Needs: Everyone only has so much they need to sleep. Sleep needs will be met in the early hours of the morning and if sleep balance is off, it can often lead to early rising. 🤍 Sleep Architecture: Children have more REM sleep and light non-REM sleep in the second half of the night, so are more easily woken. 🤍 Environment: Light, temperature and noise can cause your baby to wake, so need to optimise this to support better sleep. Is your little one up with the sun? #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Loveys are one of my favourite independent sleep associations. I introduced them to both my children and they are both very attached to theirs. 🤍 🧸 🌿 It helps cue sleep time and is a sleep association that isn’t you. 🌿 Becomes a genuine comfort to them 🌿 Help bridge the transition to daycare. As it is something familiar from home they can take it with them. How to introduce: 🐻 Follow local safe sleep guidelines 🐻 Size of a handkerchief and breathable material (eg cotton, muslin, bamboo etc.) 🐻 Sleep with it or place it under your clothing so it smells like you 🐻 Introduce during a comforting experience (cuddles, feeds etc) 🐻 Offer it to them for their naps and bedtime, placing it next to them. 🐻 When you do comfort them, involve the lovey with the comfort TIP: Buy multiple of them so if one gets lost you have a backup and/or can keep one at daycare or in the car. Do your little ones have a lovey? #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Circadian Rhythm (body clock) is not developed at birth. 🌿 Newborns often have their ‘days and nights’ confused because their internal circadian rhythm (24hr recurring response to physiological activity) is not yet established. To help with this, expose your newborn to lots of daylight during the day, even during naps. At night draw blinds, dim lights and keep things as dark as possible for all overnight wakings. 🤍 Around 3-5 months of age, circadian rhythm begins to be established. So they’ll respond to light, dark, feeding, movement and develop their own more predictable 24 hour rhythm. TIPS to support the development of circadian rhythm at 3-5mo : 🐻 Exposure to early morning sunlight 🐻 Set wake up time 🐻 dim/low light going into bedtime routine and dark sleep environment overnight 🐻 Set first feed of the day regardless of an early wake up 📌 Save this post to come back to #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Let’s talk about Bedtime Fading 🐻 Bedtime fading is a strategy to re-aligning your child’s internal clock with the bedtime you desire. Essentially pushing your child's bedtime later than usual, to REALLY increase their sleep pressure so bedtime is a quicker more 'successful' experience and then over multiple days move it earlier until they are falling asleep at the time you prefer. Principle is that the strategy can overcome your child's chronic resistance to going to bed. It’s also useful for getting a child ready for a new, earlier schedule. Bedtime fading is designed to change the brain’s internal clock. So how to do this: 1.🤍 Estimate your child’s sleep needs, and set a realistic goal for your child’s bedtime and morning wake-up time. 2. 🤍 Address factors that might interfere with your child’s ability to become drowsy at the desired bedtime. (for example is their nap too long, or too late, are they meeting their sensory needs?) 3.🤍 Figure out when your child is currently in the habit of falling asleep each night, and then pick a new bedtime that is 15 to 30 minutes later. 4.🤍 Keep your child awake (with calm, pre-sleep activities) until the newly-appointed bedtime arrives. 5.🤍 Observe how your child responds to the new bedtime. How long does it take your child to fall asleep? And make the appropriate adjustments. 6.🤍 Once your child has experienced two consecutive nights of success with the same bedtime, falling asleep within 10-20 minutes, introduce a slightly earlier bedtime. 7.🤍 Throughout this process, expose your child to crucial circadian cues. Awaken your child at the same time each morning — the wake-up time you identified as your goal. 8.🤍 Continue with the bedtime fading process, making appropriate adjustments from night to night, until you’ve reached your goal bedtime. 📌 Save this post as a guide #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Is your baby on the roll? The recommendation from the American Academy of Paediatrics is to stop swaddling your baby as first signs of rolling NOT when they are rolling. This can happen as early as 8 weeks of age. Common first signs of rolling are: 🐻 Baby moving onto their side 🐻 Flicking their legs or arching their back in attempts to roll 🐻 Holding up and moving their head for longer periods of time during tummy time When removing the swaddle you can do this gradually or cold turkey: Gradual: 🌿 Remove one arm at night for a few nights, keeping both arms in for naps 🌿 Remove the same arm for naps for a few days as well as at night 🌿 Remove both arms for nights for a few days, keeping one arm in for nap 🌿 Both arms out for nights and naps and they are now in a sleep sack Cold Turkey: At times cold turkey can be easier for the parents or maybe your baby is not adjusting well to the gradual approach so instead of extending the transition period just removing the swaddle and straight into a sleep sack can be simpler. Most babies do sleep better swaddled as it is cosy and familiar to them and it stops the Moro (startle) Reflex which can disrupt their sleep. So I absolutely understand the hesitancy to remove the swaddle if it is working well, but the AAP recommendation is “If infants are swaddled, always place them on the back. Weighted swaddles, weighted clothing or weighted objects on or near the baby are not safe and not recommended. When an infant exhibits signs of attempting to roll (which usually occurs at 3 to 4 months but may occur earlier), swaddling is no longer appropriate, as it could increase the risk of suffocation if the swaddled infant rolls to the prone position." Questions? comment below 🌿 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

How I handle babies waking upset 👇🏼 It can be so upsetting when our baby wakes up upset. It is however common and here are 4 reasons why this may be happening. Temperament. If your baby is slow to warm, transitions are harder for them and this is no different for waking as they transition in and out of sleep. 💤 If you are waking them to cap a nap this can be startling for some babies. So experiment with different ways to wake them, seeing which one works best for them - this may be turning off white noise and opening the blind. Hungry! My son was an expert at this wake response, he would wake up so HANGRY! Literally demanding to eat the second his eyes open, I had to be immediately ready to feed him or I would hear about it 🐻 They’re still tired and want to keep sleeping. Crying is often the only way they have to communicate for us and who doesn’t feel like crying when they wake upset! Waking up upset isn’t something that you necessarily need to change. It is common and that it is often their way of communicating a need to us. Have you heard of habit stacking? Habit Stacking is a technique that I learnt from my sleep education with Lyndsey Hookway. It can also be called sleep layering, habit layering or layering associations. However habit stacking is the name used to describe the process in the literature. This is a great option if the way your child falls asleep is becoming unsustainable. Any and all sleep associations are ok, however if one is becoming problematic to you, you can gently introduce change. Some common ones you may want to move away from include: 🌿 Feeding 🌿 Rocking 🌿 Pushing in the stroller 🌿 Driving in the car 🌿 Bouncing 🌿 Holding/cuddling So, if you decide that you don’t want to feed to sleep anymore and would rather pat to sleep instead, you would initially add in ‘stack’ patting onto feeding - the existing sleep association (habit) that already works well. What you can do instead, is stack a new habit onto one that already works well. In this way, the new behaviours you want to become habits are added onto the behaviour that is already working well. So while you feed to sleep, now also pat at the same time … or you could decide to shhhh or bounce or sing. 🐻 Spend a few weeks stacking these new habits. It takes time for sleep associations to change. You’d allow about 4 weeks for this to work. The, when you’re ready, you stop the sleep association that isn’t working for you anymore (in this case feeding) and leave the new one (patting) in place. Be prepared for it to initially take a little longer to settle your baby to sleep as they adjust to the change. Have you tried habit stacking before? #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Does your toddler refuse going to bed? Is your toddler's bedtime turning into a circus full of stall tactics, crying, negotiations and tantrums? 😭 You are NOT alone. Toddlerhood is HARD and this is no different at bedtime. They are hardwired to want control and start to need and demonstrate more autonomy. Parenting toddlers is exhausting, no more so at bedtime when it's the end of the day and all you want is your alone time. Here are the top reasons toddlers are having a hard time with bedtime. Your job as their parent is to play detective to understand the why and then make the changes. Top reasons: 🌿 Not tired enough yet = not enough sleep pressure: so shorter nap &/or later bedtime required 🌿 Unmet sensory or temperament needs 🌿 Struggling with separation: consistent 1:1 time without distractions, focused on connection and emotional reassurance 🌿 Needing a stronger more predictable bedtime routine with kind but firm boundaries Additional Tips: 🤍 Get silly and playful. Leading with connection and playfulness can lead to better cooperation 🤍 Visual bedtime routine can be such a helpful tool Let me know in the comments how your toddler is handling bedtime 👇🏼 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

I often find that one of the most common sleep fears parents have is their child being overtired. Your baby becomes overtired when they have been awake for too long. If a child is overtired their cortisol levels will rise. This often can result in making it hard to calm them and/or settle them to sleep. Also if it becomes a chronic issue sleep architecture can change and there can be a reduction in the restorative slow wave NREM sleep. Overtiredness can happen in each awake time but also as an accumulation throughout the day. So prioritising your baby’s sleep is important. Supporting their sleep should be a priority. 🌿 However, we can be so scared of our baby becoming overtired that we can obsess about their sleep and it can consume our days. Instead of worrying about being overtired, try to put this energy into tuning into your baby and learning their cues as well as the impact that overtiredness has on them. My daughter is EXTREMELY sensitive to being overtired and honestly our days are hard when she hasn’t had her required sleep. So I always prioritise her sleep. My son is much less impacted by it, an odd missed/short nap or late bedtime barely has an impact, so I am much more relaxed about his schedule. TIP: One very common response to the overtired fear is having shorter wake windows than needed. This could result in long settling periods or create cat nap cycles. Often our baby may have had enough sleep pressure to fall asleep but not stay asleep. Don’t be afraid to experiment with wake windows and know that during the infant stage, every 3-4 weeks they need to be increased. 🤍 Save this post for when you need it 📌 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Do you feel like your little one is getting poor sleep? There are often underlying contributors of poor sleep beside the common known biological and behavioural causes. Some of these include: 🤍 Genetics: Parental history of poor sleep & sleep needs 🤍 Feeding 🤍 Physical health 🤍 Motor Development 🤍 Anatomical 🤍 Sleep Pathology 🤍 Mental Health 🤍 Neurodevelopmental 🤍 Sensory When I work with families it is always important for me to consider if there are underlying causes for the poor sleep unrelated to biology or behaviour. Which is why I include a detailed intake form before our initial consultation together. Looking for sleep support? My sleep packages include all the support and personalization you and your family need. Have you experienced the witching hour? 🤍 Witching Hour is a time in the evening, generally between 5-11pm where a baby is much fussier than normal. Mostly affecting newborns, it often begins between weeks two or three, peaks around week six, then comes to an end around the three to four month mark. There are a couple of main reasons of why witching hour happens at this time of day Why this time of day? 🐻 Your baby may be tired 🐻 Your baby may be overstimulated 🐻 Your baby may be hungry How can you help? 🌿 Try to reduce stimulation: this includes dining the lights, going into a dark & quiet room. 🌿 Try a warm bath, or turn the faucet on and run the top of their head under the warm faucet 🌿 Cluster feed. Even if you have just fed, try again. 🌿 Go outside in fresh air with your baby (in your arms, carrier, stroller) Save this post future reference 🤍 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

The 2-1 nap transition. This nap transition often happens between 12-18 months of age, more commonly between 13-15 months. What are the signs: 🤍 Refusing the second nap (even when the first nap is capped and awake time increased) 🤍 Second nap is really short (even when the first nap is capped and awake time increased) 🤍 Resisting bedtime 🤍 False starts 🤍 Split Nights 🤍 Early Morning Wakes My favorite way to support this transition is to cap the first nap. This helps to increase the sleep pressure before the second nap. Incrementally cap the nap until it is only 10 minutes, after this you can drop it! When this happens, you may need to bring the first nap forward to 11.30 am … but then slowly push it a little later so that they are able to comfortably make it to bedtime. 🐻 It is a big jump in awake time, so it is common that there may be a period of time where there are 1 and 2 nap days as they adjust. Got questions about the 2-1 nap transition? Let's chat: Self Soother Vs Signaler 🌿 All babies (and adults) rouse at the end of their sleep cycles. However, what a baby does during this awakening varies and is often down to temperament. In the 1970s, researcher Dr. Thomas Anders was observing this and coined the term 'self soother'. The 'self soother' would wake between sleep cycles, they were most likely to comfort themselves (repositioning, sucking thumb, finding their lovey, etc.) and go back to sleep. Often described as 'good sleepers' and have easy-going temperaments and often will not need much support. 🤍 The 'signaler' would need support and co-regulation from a caregiver to call out quickly upon waking. Often described as 'difficult sleepers' and highly sensitive temperaments. Usually slower to consolidate their sleep, struggle to settle and are easily impacted by change. It's important to mention that if there was a need (hunger, thirst, connection, wet diaper, etc.), the soother would signal for support, just as the signalers would. 🐻 Temperament and sensory needs play a huge part in sleep. Important to take the time to understand your baby's temperament, rhythm, patterns, sensory preferences, and sleep needs. As well as a better understanding it's not anything you do or don't do that determines if they are a soother or signaler. They are who they are. Learning how best to support them takes time. Save this post to reference for your little one 🌿 #SleepConsultant #RegisteredSocialWorker#ChildDevelopmentExpert #InfantSleepSpecialist #MentalHealthSupport #FamilySleepGoals#PerinatalWellness #ParentingSupport #SleepSolutions #SleepTrainingExpert #HealthySleepHabits #PostpartumSupport #ChildBehavioralHealth #RelationshipBuilding

Daycare is a huge transition for you and your child! 🌿 They may take some time to sleep well and predictably at daycare. This is ok! It will be ok! Be guided by their mood after you pick them up. The circadian rhythm is a strong force so even if they have not had their regular amount of daytime sleep they may not be ready for an earlier bedtime. So be guided by their mood to determine if they need a late afternoon power nap, early bedtime or regular bedtime. Some questions to ask daycare before starting: 🤍 What are their nap time/s? 🤍 How are they supported to sleep? 🤍 Will they wake your baby from a nap? 🤍 Will their nap times/duration be shared with you? 🤍 What is the sleep environment like? 🤍 Can you bring their own sleep sack/blanket from home? Focus on connection When you are together before and after their day at daycare, carve out special time with them. This can be as little as 10 min. Bedtime will become an even special time to connect through a predictable, calm routine focused on uninterrupted 1:1 time. Planning for this time can really help, schedule this time into your daily routine. If your little one is starting daycare and you are looking to support their sleep. So, supported naps vs. crib naps? what’s the big deal? 🌿 In truth, not much 🐻 In the first year, many babies prefer a supported nap. Babies will often fall asleep more easily with motion and/or being in very close proximity to their primary caregivers. Sleep is sleep! It doesn’t matter where it happens. If your baby sleeps well then I always encourage parents to embrace this. Use nap times to run errands, do drop off/pick up, go for a walk, catch up with friends, etc. Know that as babies grow and develop they may sleep less when on the go. 🌿 Some highly sensitive babies may not sleep well on the go and need a quiet, dark environment to fall and stay asleep. There is no one way. There is no right way. Do what works for you and your baby! 🤍 What works for your bub support naps or crib naps?
