For so many people, questioning is not about faithfulness it’s about moral integrity. Why can’t we just address issues with straight forward transparency??? Because the LDS institution has not dealt with the truth of its own past, shadow, and shame. As a faith, we don’t know yet that being honest about the mess IS faith promoting. As a faith, we don’t know yet how much we could learn from the failings of our leaders. As a faith, we don’t know yet God wants our whole story, not just our sanitized story. As a faith we don’t know yet that hiding the truth only increases our institutional shame. We don’t know yet that we gain respect by showing our vulnerabilities. We haven’t yet laid out our institutional burdens at the feet of Jesus. Dear LDS church, until you are willing to trust the goodness of the Jesus whose name you claim, You’ll never be able to honestly model the values you say you hold. It’s time to claim the exiled parts of the real Mormon story. All of it past and current. No matter how messy It’s where you and all of us will find Real Jesus. Which part of the LDS story would you bring out of exile? Why? #ldsfaithcrisis #ldsfaithtransition #ldsfaithexpansion #transparencymatters #churchethics #faithfulquestions

We do not believe that a remarried woman commits adultery, so what is Jesus really saying? Are we just not living Christ’s law? Actually, no. Divorce was a luxury of the elite who didn’t need 2 people to contribute to the home economy. He refers to those who divorced for new spouses who brought more power, connections, or wealth. Jesus was also talking to a society that valued the group, not the individual. This means that honor and shame according to group dynamics were a person’s entire social capital. Christ allows divorce in cases of adultery, because it would damage the reputation and man’s standing in the community, but he expands this idea, saying that the woman’s honor also held value for herself, not just in relation to her husband. Christ is saying that an unnecessary divorce (always initiated by the man) would damage the woman’s honor as well as the man’s, because he forced her to remarry for no reason. @jkirkrichards, Sermon on the Mount. @sacrocubism, Sermon on the Mount. The death of a loved one usually brings up questions about God, faith, life, death, heaven, hell, eternity, and more. Whatever  your previous relationship with God was like, walking through grief may challenge aspects of your faith. One powerful truth in the Isaiah scripture for today is in the word reason. The original Hebrew word could also be translated as “debate” or even “argue.” God invites us to bring our questions to Him. He can handle it. When their brother Lazarus died, Martha and Mary said to Jesus something like, “Lord, why didn’t You get here sooner so You could have kept our brother from dying?” In twenty-first-century English, WHY? Asking WHY doesn’t mean you have lost your faith. God’s best friends throughout the Bible asked WHY in various ways. It’s possible to question God with a rebellious heart, trying to tell Him what to do. That’s not what I’m saying. But bringing your questions to God as a child would to a loving parent is exactly what you should be doing with them. Don’t pretend they are not there. (And no need to manufacture questions you don’t feel.) Bring your questions to God. You won’t make Him mad at you. Doing so can often lead you into an even deeper relationship with Him going forward. #GodIsLove #Grief #FaithfulQuestions

“We live by revelation, as Christians, as artists, which means we must be careful never to get set into rigid molds. The minute we begin to think we know all the answers, we forget the questions, and we become smug like the Pharisee who listed all his considerable virtues, and thanked God that he was not like other men.” • Our faith is shaped by our questions. Come ask questions as we seek answers together. Sunday, 6 pm, True Self Yoga Studio, 2727 Westmoore Ct. SW. #wildwoodgathering #thisischurch #faithanddoubt #faithfulquestions #olympiawa #olywa
