Bolivia’s El Choro trek is a three-day, 40 mile, hike into the Yungas Valley. The path follows an ancient pre-Hispanic trade route that was used for centuries and was part of an Inca road system that once spanned much of South America. You hit 16,000 feet within a half-mile of the trailhead and are rewarded with views of the snow-capped mountains in Bolivia’s Cordillera Real, a sub-range in the Andes. It’s then all downhill as you descend over two miles in elevation from the altiplano into the jungle. Mountains change from barren, snow-capped peaks to steep peaks and cliffs covered in trees and vegetation. You start in frigid temperatures and scare air and end in a hot and humid jungle with mosquitoes as thick as the air. Seeing the terrain and vegetation change as you descend is one of the hike’s highlights and is noticeable from the pictures. The pictures are in the order shot, allowing you to see the shifting vegetation. The trek offers plenty of solitude. The path is well-marked and you can take public transportation from La Paz to the starting point and from the end point back to La Paz. Therefore, you do not need a guide. You also don’t see many other hikers; I saw 2 other hikers in three days. Un acto de combustión, una propuesta “purificadora y terapéutica” en la que el bailaor afronta un proceso de transformación para dejar salir al nuevo Choro. “I think that is the bridge” it didn’t align with the map, but the path disappeared on our side of the river so we were out of options. The narrowest part of the river is good for DIY bridges but bad for speed and ferocity of the water you’re crossing. Halfway through a 3 day hike and having descended around 1500 already we weren’t massively keen to turn back. It wobbled, it creaked and it swayed but it was actually fine (once across). The El Choro hike starts a 45 minute drive out of La Paz. Our local taxi driver dropped us off and we were at 4500m above sea level, higher than at any point on the Pacific Crest Trail. La Paz itself is at 3500m, the highest city in the world. We needed to hike up to almost 5000m, Gav was feeling a bit lightheaded and Claire was out of breath. Luckily there was a rapid descent on the other side so we slowly pushed on. The hike follows part of a 500km long network of Inca Trails but is more off-the-beaten-track than places such as Machu Picchu. Following remote trails that were built (there are paving stones) at least 500 years and possibly much longer ago is quite special. On day 2 of the hike we descended into deep rainforest and as the elevation dropped it became hotter and more humid. We camped in small and remote homesteads run by locals who carve out an existence here on steep jungle slopes. We were lucky to spot monkeys one morning, scrambling from the trees as they saw us. There were bright green birds and neon blue butterflies the size of our hands only needing to nonchalantly flap their wings once every few seconds. There were also insects, out to get us… We emerge from the rainforest into a small village. We buy a Coca Cola which in the heat and humidity tastes wonderful. So starts our return journey to La Paz. Two local mini buses and a taxi wind their way back up through the mountains and cloud. The temperature drops. The minibus breaks down and then starts again. Our slightly anxious faces out of place amongst our Bolivian counterparts who have seen it all before. While in Seville, I had the great pleasure of seeing the incomparable Antonio Molina "El Choro" dance - something I've been trying to do for years but always just missing him - not once, but twice. The first night at the Casa de la Memoria, the historic flamenco cultural center in the heart of town, and the following evening at the Fundación Cristina Heeren in Triana, a neighborhood legendary for its long association with flamenco. As filming/photography is not allowed during performances at either location, you'll have to take my word for it that both evenings were unforgettable. But I *also* had the honor and privilege of having a private class with El Choro working on "palmas", the rhythmic hand-clapping used in flamenco. My understanding has always been a combination of instinct, ear, and observation, from the time my Mom got me my first flamenco recording of Carlos Montoya when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I'm pleased to report that, as several musician friends in Barcelona and Madrid previously told me, the assessment was that I didn't really need a class - not bad for a half-Spaniard who didn't grow up in Spain. So instead, we concentrated on working out some more complicated/advanced percussion and naturally, as any good teacher does, I was given homework. It’s definitely becoming more instinctive, as I can "hear" it inside my head, even without any music playing. And now, much to his embarassment I'm sure, I get to refer to Antonio as "my teacher" 😆 This was a real highlight of my journey, not only getting to see a truly great artist perform, but also spending time with someone who as it turns out just so happens to be a great guy. Era um sonho de aventura conhecermos o Caminito Del Rey, sempre ouvirmos falar desta trilha fantástica nas alturas, antes considerada a mais “perigosa do mundo”. E realmente o lugar é deslumbrante, El Caminito del Rey é uma passagem cravada nas paredes dos desfiladeiros de Chorro e Gaitanejo, a norte de Málaga, na Espanha com cerca de 7 km. A construção, concluída em 1905, foi feita enquanto era construída uma hidrelétrica no rio Guadalhorce. O caminho original não possuía nenhum tipo de parapeito ou dispositivos de segurança. Ela era aberta ao público que podia se prender aos cabos de aço atraves de um mosquetão. Em 2001 houve um acidente que causou a m*rte de algumas pessoas. A trilha foi fechada e reaberta em 2015 após uma restauração que a deixou bem mais segura. 4 days hiking El Choro; an old Inca path that starts high up on a mountain pass and drops down into the Yungus Valley. 4 incredible days of beginning at where the rocks are grey and red and the land is barren, to dropping down to cloud forest, dry forest and jungle where the pockets of heat are steam room suffocating. Add to that rivers, waterfalls, butterflies, birds, so much rain and evaporating cloud, undisturbed mountain forests, friendly locals who live in the mountains and some of the most serene camping spots and you’ve got one of the most beautiful hikes we’ve done. Nas Yungas bolivianas, onde montanhas se encontram com selvas, os bosques de nuvens encantam os sentidos. Did our first climbs in #elchoro #spain🇪🇸 today. The approach was brutal. First we had to park the car just right to avoid any #quickdraws we might drop. Then we had to open the trunk and make sure the #cooler was level. Lucky for us, none of us bled out a #flipop or tripped in the #blackberry bushes. The routes were excellent. Dead vertical with either finger pockets for perfect edges. The amount of climbing here is amazing and should be on any #climbers list. Comfortable Spanish #fincas #roadside crags to 14 pitch routes in every grade. #sportclimbing at its best.
