#kjreview @devilskinnz Surfacing New Zealand’s best heavy rockers return with a 6 track EP that encapsulates their versatility. ‘The Whale Song’ is a longish tune with some choice hard rock riffs that are great for headbanging. There’s a cool bluesy solo that justifies the length. The headbang vibes continue into the first cover, ‘Holy Diver’. It’s a solid enough tribute, with Jennie Skulander giving the vocals more grunt in lieu of some of Dio’s higher notes. Better though is their muscular take on Heart’s ‘Barracuda’, with the riff really getting dirty and Skulander nailing her interpretation of the vocals. The bass gets some love on 2023 single ‘Let Me Breathe’, which continues to build from melody to the brutal growl breakdown. ‘Insects’ is arguably a bit grungy while also working within the band’s strengths of groove and melody. Final track ‘Unborn’ is the keeper, with a great guitar into from Nail, that recalls the power ballad style of Maiden, Metallica or Halestorm. The strings are perfect and the solo is epic. There’s a lot of facets to Devilskin, maybe to their detriment in terms of fitting a scene, but it means they’re rarely repeating themselves song to song. I first heard @sarahjulia when i came across one of their covers while scrolling on my instagram explore page. I immediately became obsessed with their harmonies and use of instruments like the harp and the contrabass so i was very excited to see how their own music would sound like. The Amsterdam based sister duo released this past month their debut EP “How Do We Go Back To Being normal” and i’ve had it on repeat ever since. Their voices complement each other in a heart warming harmony showcasing their introspective lyrics. With themes of loss and nostalgia the sisters prove to be great storytellers capturing our attention from the very beginning.
