• May 18 • Give a salute... It's National Armed Forces Day! 🦅 Disney support of the U.S. armed forces goes back to the brothers, themselves. Roy was enlisted in the Navy during World War I. Walt wanted to join him but was too young, instead working with the Red Cross as a 17-year-old providing support on the battlefield. Today, the military connection is strong. The Heroes Work Here program trains, hires, and supports working veterans in their transition to civilian life. Military cast members have access to work and life support programs through the Disney SALUTE BERG (Business Employee Resource Group), which also offers assistance to their family and friends. Active service members and veterans can enjoy the fun side, too. The Disney's Military Salute Program offers discounts and easier access to Disneyland and the Walt Disney Resort. This includes Shades of Green, the military-only resort property at WDW that is owned and operated by the Department of Defense. Every day at the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom parks, you can also witness the long-standing tradition of the flag retreat ceremony. Probably the most known is the Disney College Program, where current students or recent grads can spend a semester or summer working at Walt Disney World, typically in entry-level areas, interacting with guests. At the same time, participants are living with other collegians and learning about the Disney company and culture. I am the proud owner of a Ducktorate degree myself, and would recommend the experience to anyone. Also during or after college, students have opportunities to take on real-world jobs with the company, through their professional internship programs. These are actual positions listed on the Disney Careers website, providing hands-on experience in many facets of operations. But what if you didn't go to college, or maybe didn't get that high school diploma? Enter the Disney Aspire program. ✨We all sat down to finally, watch 🎬Wish🎬 on Disney + last night for Friday Family Film night. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but despite all the hate the film has received, I found it quite watchable. I don’t think it will have the songs to bang out in the car like other Disney films. They were a little conversational for me but I enjoyed the blend of CGI and watercolours. It’s not something we’ve seen a lot of. And Disney tends to change up their artistic style quite a bit. Dinosaur definitely doesn’t look like Snow White and Bambi doesn’t look like Chicken Little. I think one of the most distracting things about this film was the sheer number of references in it. As a Disney Adult that knows the older films pretty well, it took me out of this film a bit to see a call back to a, in most cases better film, every scene. But the message is very sweet. • May 16 • Fire it up... It's National Barbecue Day! 🍗 Let's get semantics out of the way. Depending on where you're standing and who you're asking, barbecue (or BBQ) can mean two different things. In my Midwestern homeland, it's grilling [insert protein] over fire and coals. In California, it's specifically grilling tri-tip. If you're in the South or Kansas City, it's a whole other ball of wax and processes. Having lived in the South, as with aforementioned buttermilk biscuits, I GET IT. Argue as you will. I came across an article from a North Carolinian (Team Vinegar, here 🙋‍♀️) who was very passionate about rating all the places you can "technically" get barbecue on Disney property. Being from the South, you can guess how his grading scale was skewed. Among your choices for heat meat on property are places like Roundup Rodeo BBQ, Whispering Canyon Cafe, Flame Tree Barbecue, and more. But let's face facts. You're getting barbecue (however you see it) from a theme park. Lower them bars. His top pick, by far, was The Polite Pig (pic 1) at Disney Springs. It was where even he got introduced to various styles of [Southern] barbecue, including his new favorite, with Alabama white sauce. His lowest-rated place, called "a skip" in his book, is the newest of them all, Regal Eagle Smokehouse (pic 2) at the American Adventure pavilion in Epcot. It's based on Sam Eagle from the Muppets. The Walt Disney Company was started with his brother Roy, who carried on the business after Walt was gone. His wife Lillian was his sounding board and support. His daughters Diane and Sharon sparked the idea for Disneyland, and eventually carried on his legacy and philanthropy. In the historic Presidio area of San Francisco, you can visit The Walt Disney Family Museum (waltdisney.org), founded by Diane Disney Miller. It is a treasure box of memorabilia and memories of not only the man himself, but, as the name suggests, his family. • May 14 • Good gravy... It's National Buttermilk Biscuit Day! 🧈 I grew up in the Midwest, so my introduction to biscuits came in a can that scared the shit out of you when you opened it. Fast forward to living in the South for over a decade, and, well... I GET IT, NOW. Homemade is where it's at, but you can still get the goods at places like your favorite chicken haunts (I miss you, Biscuitville), Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel, etc. I prefer mine mostly plain style, but I will not sneeze at some cheese and/or jalapeño. Fun fact: My favorite minor league baseball team is the Montgomery (Alabama) Biscuits, solely for their logo and mascot. I also like to pronounce the word "bis-KWEE". Because it looks French, and that's what French sounds like in my head. At WDW, you can get your fix at places like Roundup Rodeo BBQ (pic 1) in Toy Story Land at the Disney Studios park, or go full Southern at Chef Art Smith's Homecomin' restaurant (pic 2) in Disney Springs, which is now on my nosh list for my next trip. The Little Man of Disneyland is a 1955 book I only learned about a few years ago, but it's adorable. Patrick Begorra is said little man who was living in a tree in the orange groves that used to be on the property Disneyland now occupies. One day, Mickey and friends come to the area with tools in hand, and Patrick needs to find out what's up. They take him to the studios to see the plans for the park. Patrick allows them to continue as long as he is guaranteed a peaceful home in the park, once completed. He gets one, in Adventureland. Bonus fun fact: If you are near the entrance of the Indiana Jones ride in Disneyland park, you can find his home in a tree nearby. Prior to being given the Bond crown, a round-about-30-year-old Sean Connery was featured in the Disney film Darby O'Gill and the Little People. He plays Michael, a Dubliner who takes over the job held by Darby, a caretaker at an Irish estate who spent a bit of his time trying to catch leprechauns in the area, and their king, specifically.
