Despite the introvert's urge to stay within my comfort zone, the ticking departure date pushed me to engage with flower vendors and street food sellers, finding warmth in their eyes. Contrary to misconceptions, the people of Chennai embraced me. From colleagues to hostel mates, they treated me like family, sharing food, laughter, and cultural insights. Interacting with a diverse group, I learned that, like oil and water, differences dissolve when one is willing to merge. Solo travel birthed a refined, fearless version of myself, skilled in self-care and creating a sense of home in unfamiliar lands. Returning to Delhi, tear-stained gratitude filled a letter, echoing, 'Everything that goes, indeed returns, but never the same.' Sea salt manufacture, around 2.5hrs drive from Chennai, on the way to Pondicherry. Sunny hot days like this are essential for salt production. There is no work in the rains. The majority of people work as wage earners in saltpans and do not have any influence within the salt value chain. Tamil Nadu is the largest producer of salt in India, next only to Gujarat. There are around 60,000 salt workers in Tamil Nadu, on which nearly 80% work directly in the salt pans. The remaining 20% work in loading, packing and transport. The total annual income per household in the range of Rs.10000, with both husband and wife working on the saltpan. Women are paid lower wages than men for the same work. The work is mainly seasonal, with very little options for off-season alternate livelihoods. Usually salt pan workers are neck deep in debt. Interest rates on loans (from informal sources) is around 60% per annum. The manufacturing processes is very labour intensive, in very hot and windy conditions for most part of the day. Most workers have problems related to eye sight due to reflections of sunlight from the salt crystals. Work begins early in the morning, and children are left behind at home. Most children of the community do not have access to schooling or healthcare. The industry is also highly disaster-prone, experiencing frequent threats of cyclones and high tidal waves. The Pallava King Rajasimha introduced structural architecture in stone on a grand scale. The tempo of structural edifices culminated in the creation of the famous Shore temple, having the most finite layout of a Dravida vimana, majestically fringing the sea. Before the Pallavas began their architectural experiments, temples were typically hollowed out in caves, or built of wood and bricks. During the Pallava era, architects experimented with freestanding monolithic rock cut figures and temples, working downwards from the top of giant boulders (see pic). They also went on to build beautiful temples by cutting stones to size, and stacking them into what subsequent foreign visitors called 'pagodas'. The Pallavas are a bit of a mystery. They ruled over large parts of south India (mainly the Telugu kingdom and Tamil kingdom) for 600 years between 275 AD and 897 AD. Some say they are Tamil, others that they are Telugu, and some that they are outsiders. Their capital was at Kanchipuram and their wealth came from trade, with seaports at Mammalapuram, Mylapore and Vasavasamudram. "Panam Karuppati" (Palm Jaggery) is considered healthier than "Achu Vellam" (made from sugarcane) and "Thenna Karuppati" (made from coconut kernels). Panam Karuppati is processed from the non fermented tree sap of the Palmyra tree, which is boiled at high temperatures with a little salt. This mixture is then cooled and poured into a long cone made out of palm leaves and wrapped in rice straws. When bought, this parcel is then cut into the desired size. There is a palm ribbon design on the sides of the jaggery :) Palm Jaggery is used extensively in South India for its medical benefits and is also a cooling agent to beat the summer heat.
