7 Artisans is a small Chinese company founded by a group of optical, engineering, and manufacturing buffs who met over dinner in 2015 and came up with the idea of turning out a series of distinctive and affordable camera lenses with unique and enticing specs. By September 2016, 7 Artisans had reached a total of 100 “mass production” units of its blockbuster 50mm f/1.1, a lens that remains in production as a cine/video lens in Sony E and Fujifilm X mounts. They also offer a few lenses in Leica M mount, including the super-speed 7 Artisans Photoelectric 75mm f/1.25, which admittedly is no match for its chief rival, the magnificent 75mm Leica Noctilux-M 75mm f/1.25 ASPH. However, the Chinese lens retails for a paltry $449.00, and the German one is priced at a staggering $14,395.00! 7 Artisans also offers a pair of fast wide-angles in M-mount, the Photoelectric 35mm f/2 Mark II ($298.00) and the Photoelectric 35mm f/1.4 ($429.00). Perhaps the least expensive and most intriguing M-mount lens in the 7 Artisans arsenal is the new Photoelectric 35mm f/5.6, a tiny “pancake” wide-angle that extends only 21.75mm from the camera body and weighs in at a mere 4.5 ounces. A great walk-around lens for general shooting, this attractive full-frame M-mount prime has an f/5.6 constant aperture (no iris diaphragm!) and focuses manually down to 11.8 inches. It features an advanced 5-element, 4-group design that includes 2 ED Extra-Low Dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberration and virtually eliminate color distortion and includes an integrated protective metal lens cover to protect the front element against grime and dust. Despite its suggestive name, the 7 Artisans Photoelectric 35mm f/5.6 has no electronic contacts or connections whatsoever and must be used in manual mode, but it works flawlessly on all full-frame M-mount rangefinder cameras, or, with suitable adapters, on mirrorless cameras. When used on APS-C-format cameras it provides an equivalent focal length of 52.5mm. $99.00 in satin black finish, $159.00 in silver finish with gold accents. #TBT #LeicaSociety

For many decades the Russians have turned out more mediocre Leica copies than any other nation on earth—tens of thousands of them. And they began mass producing the FED, a relatively crude replica of the Leica II (Model D), as early as 1934. They also copied the Leica Standard (Model E) a screw mount model with no rangefinder. Pick up a FED (any model) and it will be evident from its rough fit, finish, and feel that this is no Leica, and it doesn’t operate with the silky precision of the Wetzlar-made originals. FEDs, and their Soviet-made sisters the Zorkis, are generally competent, reasonably reliable (though pedestrian) picture takers, and the ubiquitous 50mm f/3.5 Industar lens (a collapsible 4-element, 3-group 50mm f/3.5 Elmar clone) often fitted to both brands, varies in quality from sub-mediocre to surprisingly good. Enter the ALMAZ TSVVS, a limited production (fewer than 1,000 units made!) Leica II copy made in the USSR between 1949 and 1950. The unit shown is fabricated of beautifully finished satin-chrome-plated (?) brass, bears a 5-pointed star with inset hammer and sickle logo, and “TCBBC” in Cyrillic characters (TSVVS in English) on the top plate, which stands for the Topographical Service of the Military Air Forces. Based on its 1/20 to 1/500 sec plus B shutter dial (no slow speed dial) wind knob, frame counter, and general configuration it’s evident that this camera is closely based on the FED (specifically the FED-1, Type IIa), but it’s finished to a far higher standard than any standard-issue FED or Leica-like Zorki we’ve ever seen. Presumably, this impressive attention to detail extends to the internals, but since we haven’t been able to handle an ALMAZ TSVVS we can’t confirm that this nicely made camera provides something akin to a “Leica feel.” Other types of ALMAZ cameras were made in Russia by LOMO, but lacking a factory logo we can’t be sure of this one’s precise provenance. One Russian writer attributes it to (surprise surprise) the ALMAZ factory and asserts that its correct model name is the VTS-VS. #TBT #LeicaSociety

El viento salino acaricia suavemente su plumaje, pero ella permanece imperturbable, un símbolo de paz y serenidad en medio del constante murmullo de las olas. A pocos metros de ella, un alcatraz se prepara para lanzarse al aire. Sus alas se despliegan lentamente, revelando una envergadura majestuosa y poderosa.
