These students and Glover are taking part in the MUSC College of Graduate Studies’ Public Engagement and Advocacy in Charleston (PEACH) program, which is designed to expose local children to the possibilities of the biomedical sciences. Glover looks at the fourth graders starting their own love affair with the sciences and notes a reflection of herself. “I looked at these kids and just saw a younger me. I saw how curious they were; I also saw how they didn’t actually know what they could do and how far they could go. I knew how they would respond to certain things. I knew some of them would need to be reassured because I saw myself in them, and I knew they would be great,” said Glover. “I didn’t exactly know what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I knew I loved helping people and working for the community, and I knew I loved solving puzzles.” Read her amazing story at the link in our bio. #MUSCGrad #CongratsGrads

I'm thrilled to announce that I received the Excellence in Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Alumni Award from Morehouse School of Medicine this weekend! 🏆🎉 It was a humbling and fulfilling experience. What made the weekend even more special was the opportunity to meet the honorable Dr. Louis Sullivan and his lovely wife. For those that dont know, Dr. Sullivan is the founding Dean of Morehouse School of Medicine and a former Secretary for Health and Human Services. This year, Dr. Sullivan was inducted as a Georgia Trustee, an honor given by the Georgia Historical Society in conjunction with the Governor of Georgia to individuals whose accomplishments and community service reflect the ideals of the founding body of Trustees, which governed the Georgia colony from 1732 to 1752. It was truly inspiring to be in the presence of such a monumental figure. 🌟 My favorite Bob Marley lyric says, "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds." Morehouse School of Medicine embodies this spirit, empowering individuals to break free from limitations and unleash their full potential. Graduate Student Spotlight! ✨🧠 Q: Give me a brief introduction of yourself, what is your name, where are you from, & what year are you? A: “My name is Grace Schamber. I am from Downers Grove, Illinois. I am the first student to go through Marquette’s Accelerated Degree Program (ADP) for the Neuroscience PhD, so I am currently a first year grad student while also finishing my senior year here at Marquette!” Q: What made you choose the Marquette BISC graduate program? A: “I have seen & felt the sense of community present in this department since I have been working in a BISC research lab since my sophomore year. I was also very interested in the accelerated aspect of this program as I can shave a year off of grad school.” Q: What are your career aspirations? A: “I am still undecided what I want to do once I get my PhD, but I would like to work in a more clinical setting doing research with humans. Right now, I am considering going into the BioTech industry or doing clinical research in a hospital, but I am keeping my options open!” Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to undergrads who are considering applying to grad school? A: “I would highly encourage talking to as many people who are going through the program that you are considering & expand those conversations to current grad students, lab techs, & PIs to really get a wide array of opinions.” Q: What keeps you motivated & grounded through the stressful times that grad school can bring? A: “I stay grounded by taking brain breaks when I can feel myself getting overwhelmed. Whether it be watching an episode of Gilmore Girls, going for a walk, or talking to my friends inside & outside of this program, it’s important to take yourself away from your work when you start to feel overwhelmed because the quality of work will reflect that mental state. Q: What is a fun fact about yourself?
