Pat The Artillery Horse's last appearance in public was on May 20, 1951, on Armed Forces Day. . The U.S. Army began mechanizing the cavalry around World War I when it became obvious that there was potential to do so. Horses and mules were still used in the cavalry during this time until the rising technology surpassed them in usefulness. In the 1930s, the Army began disposing of cavalry horses by either selling them or destroying them. In December of 1932, a final mounted parade was held in Fort D.A. Russell, TX. Donald joined the Army during World War II via a series of popular cartoons, starting with DONALD GETS DRAFTED in 1942. During his service, Donald was in the regular infantry and did stints as a flyer, a camouflage painter, and a commando. But in the years since his service, Donald was never formally discharged from the military. The opportunity came in 1984, during Donald’s 50th birthday celebration. It was a big promotion with parades at both @disneyland and @waltdisneyworld commemorating Donald’s milestone year. Donald personally participated in all sorts of appearances and ceremonies around the country. And one of those appearances included his official military discharge, with the enthusiastic participation of the Army. On May 19, 1984, Donald journeyed to Torrance, California (my hometown!) as a special guest of honor at the 25th annual Armed Forces Day Parade. And accompanying him in the parade was his girlfriend, Daisy. At the end of the parade, Donald received an “official” discharge ceremony. It was presided over by the parade’s grand marshal, Lieutenant General Arthur E. Brown Jr., who was director of army staff at the time (General Brown retired in 1989 as a four-star general and vice chief of staff). Initially joining to earn her high school diploma alongside her best friend, Jackie found more than education at YouthBuild Lake County; she discovered a community that reshaped her perspective through discipline and perseverance. These qualities not only led to her diploma but set her on a path toward service in the U.S. Navy. ⚓ Today, Jackie serves as a Seaman on an Air Carrier as a disciplined Petty Officer Third Class. She is currently exploring the world, having already visited Canada, England, and the vibrant Mediterranean waters. “When you come from a place like Waukegan, you never really think about how big the world is,” Jackie reflected. On this special Armed Forces Day, along with sponsor Assurant, we are dedicating a beautiful Habitat home for Dalious, a United States Navy Veteran. The two-story home located on Bowden Street in Austell is the 19th Habitat build for Assurant with our affiliate! We also were honored to welcome our ReStore Smyrna team, members of our Board of Directors, the NextGen Team from Habitat for Humanity International, and Chris and Yvonne Johnson from Reclaimed Karma to build with us as well on this home. Dalious enjoys a career where he can protect and serve others. That’s why he chose to work as a security guard after his honorable discharge from the Navy. He was referred to Habitat for Humanity by his brother, who built a home with us in 2016. Dalious is excited to have the opportunity to own a safe and stable home with enough space for his family. Strengthening the familial bond with his wife and two young children is not the only benefit – our affordable homeownership program offers long-term financial stability and a permanent place to call home. Amer Uttamchandani, AVP of Infrastructure Products at Assurant, also serves on our Board of Directors. He has served as coordinator for this build along with co-director, Padraig Greene. In 2023, Amer also volunteered with our affiliate of Habitat for Humanity as build lead on behalf of Assurant at their company-sponsored home build also in Austell. Thank you to Assurant for helping us serve Veterans and change lives in our community. Your partnership enables Dalious and his family to have the pride and stability of homeownership. Enjoyed hearing from service members about why they decided to join the armed forces, the future opportunities for young people to consider, and to cherish their work in active duty. At this assembly, I was surprised and fortunate to receive recognition from the PS 119’s school community, celebrating my work in the war against COVID!
