ONE-EYED JACKS (1961) ***½ Directed by Marlon Brando. Starring Marlon Brando; Karl Malden; Katy Jurado; Ben Johnson and Pina Pellicer. Screenplay by Guy Trosper and Calder Willingham; Based on The Authentic Death of Hendry Jones by Charles Neider; Produced by Frank P. Rosenberg; Cinematography by Charles Lang; Edited by Archie Marshek; Music by Hugo Friedhofer; Production Company: Pennebaker Productions; Distributed by Paramount Pictures. After robbing a Mexican bank, Dad Longworth (Karl Malden) takes the loot and leaves his partner Rio (Marlon Brando) to be captured, but Rio escapes and searches for Dad in California. ONE-EYED JACKS marked Marlon Brando’s one and only directorial effort, and his perfectionism led to the film going beyond its original budget of approximately $1.8 million to $6million. With locations set in Los Angeles; Carmel; Monterey; Big Sur and Death Valley, California the estimated two-month shoot spiralled into six months as filming expanded from 2 December 1958 through to 2 June 1959; followed by re-shoots on 14 October 1960. ONE-EYED JACKS was Paramount Pictures’ last feature released in VistaVision. #OneEyedJacks #MarlonBrando #GuyTrosper #CalderWillingham #TheAuthenticDeathofHendryJones #CharlesNeider #FrankPRosenberg #KarlMalden #KatyJurado #BenJohnson #PinaPellicer #CharlesLang #ArchieMarshek #HugoFriedhofer #PennebakerProductions #ParamountPictures #VistaVision

Continuing the segment where I look through the @tcm schedule and pick out A Little Guy I think you’ll enjoy (always airing The Next Day to give you the heads up). What do I mean by “A Little Guy?” Please see my write-up – The Essentials? – Link in Bio. . Straight from the Original One-Sheet: “They saw the Heads of Hunted Men in Zaroff’s Trophy Room!” . ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ . First off, this Picture is unrelenting; and I don’t just mean the subject matter and how well it’s paced, I mean it’s only an hour and three minutes long. And – this may surprise you (especially if you’ve seen it but perhaps not in a while) – the “game” part when they’re out in the jungle? That doesn’t begin until 38 minutes in; and, like when he finally see Jaws in that Modern Classic, it helps. Because getting to the island, the castle, all the atmosphere as the tension builds, is genuinely great stuff. (And all in an hour!) . The quality should be no surprise considering the lauded BTS including Executive Producer David O. Selznick, ‘King Kong’ Producer Merian C. Cooper, Scorer Max Steiner (and this is a great example of his early work with Themes), the same Jungle as ‘Kong’ (which Steiner also Scored) and Editor Archie Marshek who did a bunch of great stuff into the ‘70s (including a personal favorite, Bob Hope’s ‘The Cat And The Canary’). . It’s Joel McCrea and Fay Wray (yep, she also from ‘Kong’) against Leslie Banks in one of the most adapted stories of all time (20 or so other Features, 30 or so TV Episodes, and the recent Liam Hemsworth - Cristoph Waltz version on Quibi which – I was on a Quibi Show before COVID – was genuinely entertaining). . Once more from the Original One-Sheet: “Fascinating, strange and terrible is the story of Zaroff, who hunted men like animals for a sporting thrill!” . From 1932, Co-Starring Robert Armstrong (LOT of ‘Kong’ here today!) and Noble Johnson (who’s The Zombie – that’s his Credit – in another personal favorite, Bob Hope’s ‘The Ghost Breakers’); Screenplayed by James Ashmore Creelman from the Richard Connell Short Story; Directed by Irving Pichel & Ernest B. Schoedsack … . I hope you enjoy. If you can make it til Dawn … .
