Much of the pay gap comes from women performing more unpaid care work than men, particularly with children - either caring for them full-time, or taking on an often lower-paid part-time job to work around childcare. But with a reduced full-time work week, there is more opportunity for an even distribution of childcare responsibilities, something we saw borne out during the Covid-19 pandemic. An industry known for it’s long hours, punishing workload and… four-day weeks? You better believe it. 😮 The last in our current series of interviews: The 4-Day Week In Architecture. We spoke to @jamesjroach (now at @considered.works ) about why he decided to go against the ingrained culture of overwork in architecture and work smarter, not harder. The benefits of a four-day week are plain to see when you take a look at the data that’s already out there. James and Andy did their research, acted on what they’d learnt, and the result? Better outcomes for their practice, and their employees. Lived experience played a crucial part too. James could see that grinding away for 12-13 hour days wasn’t achieving better productivity - it was burning people out. There had to be a better way, and there was - a shorter, more focused working week. Partly, it’s to do with simple mentality. When we can see the finishing line, we feel confident to sprint towards it. When it’s nowhere to be seen, that’s when legs feel leaden and we slow down to a crawl. No hump days in a 4-day week, that’s for sure. Once you’ve switched to a four-day week, you want the rest of the world to know how much better things can be. All of our interviewees have been more than keen to share their stories. They’ve improved their companies, their lives, and the lives of their employees.
