I read "Go Set A Watchman" last week. I didn't like it very much and found myself skimming, bored of the Finches, and wanting to more know about Calpurnia. I decided to do a henna tribute, a cameo-style relief frame, imagining her as a young woman in a different time, carefree to explore the world and have dreams of her own. She would wear chic dresses and put flowers in her hair, and someone would carry a cameo carving of her in their pocket. The lighter areas are from some henna I had left over from dyeing my kid's hair. It didn't have sugar or essential oils in it, so even though it stayed on my skin the same length of time as the other henna, it didn't have the moisture and longevity of the paste I made for using on skin, and so it created an unintentional two-tone design. The first photo shows the first day stain, the second photo shows the second day stain where it has developed and the two-tone design is more visible, and the third photo shows the paste when it was on and almost dry.
This. Book.🤩🤩 I first heard about @thealkajoshi when one of my henna friends, @hennabyjen, worked with her during her book promotion. Right away I ordered the book on pre-order! After months of anticipation I got it in the mail and read it all in one day. It is an engaging journey of hard work, skill, secrets, deception, frustration, shame, love, and luck! As a henna artist myself I loved being able to picture Lakshimi drawing with the reeds and was transported to Jaipur through the vivid descriptions of smells, sounds, and feelings of drawing with henna. I especially loved one passage about how Lakshimi found peace in the designs and details around her: "I could lose myself - drawing the pattern of the milkmaid's chunni or the tiny feathers of a myna bird. It calmed me...concentrating on details, like the ladybug crawling up my arm or the paisley pattern of my sari, and ignoring everything else, crowded out anxiety, pain and worry." I love the way Alka weaves this tale for us to enjoy. You can lose yourself in the story, just like losing yourself in the details of a gorgeous pallu. I have two more bee mugs in the kiln today and then that will be the last of them for a while. I'm going to be focusing on making my mandala mugs and exploring other designs throughout the winter. My camera can't change its focus once I start the self-timer, so I dragged a coat tree into the kitchen, hung the mug on a hook and focused on it. Then I'd press the shutter button, grab the mug, and hold it "in space" whole I shoved the tree out of the way, and tried to stand in the exact spot so the camera could focus on the mug. Then I had to try to hold the mug in a way where you could kinda see the henna but trying not to make my hands look weird. 🤣 All that hullabaloo was worth it I think. Do you ever practice things with your non-dominant hand? I learned that it's good for your brain so I started doing "easy" things with my left hand, like brushing my teeth or typing on my phone. I've come a long way in the past couple years, and while I won't be cutting vegetables with my non-dominant hand any time soon, I can brush my teeth and do henna pretty well with my little leftie :) Self reflection and positive critique is important to me, so I'll add this: 3 years ago, I would have been thrilled if this design came out of my right hand, so tonight I'm choosing to be proud of it even though I don't like the vines. When I'm doing henna at an event, I often hear people walk by and say "oh I'd love that but my hands are so ugly". It floors me that this cultural acceptance of hating our bodies runs so deep that we even judge our HANDS...and that's a "normal" thing to say. If I can, I try to encourage the person that their hands are lovely the way they are. Then I get comments back like, "oh no, look at my large veins/ thinning skin/wrinkles/scars/ chipped nail polish/missing fingers/crooked or fused fingers/rough cuticles... " Hands tell a story. Hands are wise and worthy and they deserve to be adorned and celebrated. They bring you through life and allow you to play, create, pleasure, share, work, and love. If you want to get henna on your hands...do it. There is no such thing as an ugly hand. I realize I'm saying this as a person with "good hands", but I don't think that detracts from the message. My hands tell a story too; in fact in this picture I have two scabs on my left hand from scraping it on some metal when I was driving a forklift at work. ;) Do you dislike your hands? Do you think maybe you could try to move towards neutrality and acceptance instead? I love seeing that fresh stain revealing itself from under the henna paste. This is the design I did in Mexico, and it got a little smooshed when my model had to go pee ;) Henna logistics can be tricky 🤣 Fortunately, with a combination of rockin @hennalounge henna paste and the hot+humid nature of Tulum, this part of the design still stained perfectly even after only being on her skin for an hour. Generally we recommend at least 4 hours for good stains, and 6-10 for best results. ((( Some people leave it on even longer! Once I did a test spot of 6, 10, 12, 24, and 30 hours and I found no benefit to keeping it on longer than 12 hours. The finishing touch 🥰 Dots make everything better. I love the deep cherry fingertips in this picture! The day one stain colour is always remarkable on fingertips! The scalloped edges and wrap-around style was a lot of work but the wrap around was my model's idea and she was patient while I tried to make them perfect! They were done the day before, and then we decided to do a design in her palms to compliment the ones on the tops of her hands. I had never done this much henna on one person before so when she offered, I jumped on the opportunity!
