Thinking about how days ago I rolled clay into slabs and attached those slabs til they were a mug and then that clay was fired for the first time. Then it was brushed with wax, dipped in glaze and fired even hotter and then today I picked it up and now I am drinking coffee out of it. And all that magic is an oversimplified version of the story which brushes over the labor other people did to obtain materials and make the clay and glazes and the buckets and the coffee. But anyway, sometimes I feel self conscious about the fact that I will never make a mug that looks like it came from a store...until I remind myself that I don't want to make a mug that looks like it came from a store. There's magic in the hand made and by extension I think there is magic in the VISIBLY handmade, in the way this mug looks wonky but feels made for my hands, because it was. A couple of my first slab mugs made last school year. I'm a sucker for Argyle and wanted to try to depict it. The first mug was made using wax resist, carving (the dashed lines), and underglazes. I covered it in clear glaze and added white glaze for a drippy, overflowing foam effect. New ceramics WIP, I went in today to get caught up because I missed the last class and made 6 mugs. But somehow only remembered to take pictures of one as I was putting them away. This one is the most unique of the bunch. I’m going to be using it as a paint cup, so I made some hands down at the bottom to rub your brush up against. It also has a cutout on the lip to rest your brush on. Still needs to be decorated so it’s far from done, but I have some diabolical plans for this mug, and just some sinister plans for the other 5. I've tried so many keep cups over the years but the reality is I absolutely hate eating and drinking off anything plastic/silicone, I dont like hot drinks out of a steel vessel (tea just does not taste the same from steel ☕️), I can't be trusted to not lose lids. And let's not talk about the time I treated myself to a name brand keep cup but then had to watch a you tube tutorial everytime I had to take it apart to wash it 🙈 This design has popped up for me over the years as a moustache guard cup, now that peri menopause has entered my life amd I've got my own impressive moustache I thought now is the time to test it out. The moustache guard doubles as a semi lid and the thumb groove makes it easy to hold comfortably in one hand. The glaze on this was also a little test of 2 commercial glazes that I wanted to see the results of when layered, again another win for me. 🩷 After the last few loads of kiln disasters and making a lot of things for everyone else it's been nice to make something for myself. I can see that I've made a few small design flaws with this one but I hope to make a few more over the coming weeks, practising this slab building design as well as testing out some more glaze combos. January has been tough for me. Usually in the winter months, I don’t have much of a social battery. When you’re someone that works with energy, this can pose as a bit of a problem. The winter months are a bit of a plugin and recharge time for me. I’ve been getting lost in my art, and I find working and creating with clay is extremely grounding for me. ESPECIALLY since I live in Canada and everything is frozen right now and it makes it impossible for me to get out and dig my toes into the dirt. …So that’s what I have been doing. I’ve been creating with clay to feel that connection to the earth and hold onto a little bit of joy until the light returns. Originally I was going to apologize for being MIA, but I don’t feel that it is necessary. In order for me to hold space for you, I need to nurture my own self care. But know that I am here, and I will emerge. And if you want to follow along with my clay journey, feel free to give me a follow over at @megcrowpottery. 🩷🍄

Working with Laguna B-Mix today. I think this might be one of my favourite clays to work with from start to finish. The texture, the consistency, the way the clay responds to shaping, just perfect!👌🏻Hard to believe that this big hunk of clay will be transformed into beautiful functional pieces.
