DC’s THE HOUSE OF SECRETS #123 (Sept., 1974) features, IMHO, one of the creepiest covers of the Bronze Age. Frank Robbins’ horrific image is actually a huge spoiler for the story it illustrates, “A Connecticut Ice Cream Man in King Arthur’s Court” (written by Michael Fleisher with art by the great Alex Toth). I post this comic in part to again lament the absence of a DC trade collecting the works of Toth, a true legend (and many artists’ favorite artist) who worked in literally every single genre the company published, in a career spanning over 40 years. It’s the penultimate day of 21 Days of Bronze Age Horror Comics, with DC’s THE HOUSE OF SECRETS #90 (March, 1971). Cain’s timid brother Abel is gifted with a “circuit-printed, transistor-programmed, memory-channeled digital COMPUTER!”… which sounds like writer Gerry Conway had absolutely no idea what a computer was (I mean, it WAS 1970). Treasure The House Of Secrets, No. 136, from 1975. The first story is about three brothers who stand to inherit the vast fortune of their grandfather. The grandfather lets them know he intends to split it evenly between them, but they all object, so he does what anyone would do, he hides his fortune somewhere on his estate and says the first one to find it, gets the whole thing. Of course one brother goes mad with greed and kills the other two, he confesses to his grandfather before trying to smother him. Fortunately the grandfather, who had his suspicions about the recent deaths, had a servant hide in the shadows. The servant leaps out to protect, they struggle, before the greedy mad man falls on a dagger and dies. The second story is about a little orphan boy, Paul, sent to live with his poor aunt and uncle. Uncle, in an attempt to save the family, has sunk the last of his savings into a boat. A chance encounter with a strange old sailor leaves the little boy with a rocker that looks just like his uncles ship. Somehow, by riding it, Paul is able to help the real ship along. Soon business is booming for Aunt and Uncle, but they spend more than they make and force Paul to use his magic again, the shipment must come in TONIGHT or they will be flat broke again. Paul rides and rides, his connection to the ship grows stronger, too strong. We often say, "Better not to judge a book by its cover," but our natural biases can often hinder us from appreciating the true beauty of something before us. If you were quick to judge Anthill Studios' The House of Secrets and turned off the screen within a few minutes, thinking you had seen enough, then you have likely missed out on one of the studio's and Director Niyi Akinmolayan's strongest movies since 2016's The Arbitration. The House of Secrets follows Sarah (Onajite Dede, Efe Irele), a sheltered woman whose haunting past resurfaces when she is imprisoned as an accomplice to her spy lover, Panam (Shawn Faqua). Twenty years later, a group rescues her from jail and recreates a semblance of her old house to help her remember a secret number hidden by Panam. When The House of Secrets begins, it does so with an unassuming premise. We witness an older Sarah's excitement about having something new to write about the young couple next door and their captivating expression of love. However, we soon learn that Sarah is wheelchair-bound and earns a living by writing and publishing her findings from snooping, anonymously contributing to a local publication. As we grapple with the legality and morality of this revelation, the rug is swiftly pulled out from under us, and the true psychological thriller that is The House of Secrets begins. The House of Secrets by Brad Meltzer Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Of the two books I read by this author, I have become a fan. I love the thriller elements in his stories. When I saw this book, I had to get it to see if he can capture my attention again. Hazel has been fascinated by mysteries since her father is the famous Jack Nash who has a television show called House of Secrets where they talked about unsolved mysteries. Hazel wakes up in a hospital without any memories of how she got there. She was in a car accident where her brother Skip got injured and her father died. She cannot remember anything until an FBI agent came to talk to her about a case where a dead body has a bible buried in his chest. Hazel gets a flash of memory of when her father used to give her a riddle of a dead person with a bible buried in his chest. She gets this flash of memories about her father looking for the bible of Benedict Arnold. Hazel is a simple archeologist not a thrill-seeking person like her father and her brother. When she starts questioning Skip, things take a turn since someone starts watching her. Are the murders something to do with her father's show? Ok another movie review that absolutely no one asked me to do. The movie is about..... ermmmm a woman who ermmm...you see she and her husband errrmm 99 democracy, coup errrmmm.... wo, lets leave that aside. The movie lost me with the excessive mental illness scenes in the beginning and I never really got hooked. That said, it has a pleasantly unusual plot, interesting fight choreography, and the OST was at times simply stunning (take a bow @adam.songbird @officialwati @naomiclassik @tyanx ). There were also a few Goosebumps scenes. (No spoiler zone pls) Both the young and old Sarah characters were amazing. I think I'd have preferred my Aunty Kate @k8henshaw for Mrs Lawal's role but irrespective she was refreshingly solid. (Bias detected ) Most of the characters were pointless as they contributed nothing to the thickeneing of the plot while others were underdevoped (The General, the NGO staff etc) Mrs Lawal was misrepresented. I mean did she die a hero or a villain? Ironically, the PTSD flashbacks in the movie were enough to give viewers PTSD. In the end, it strikes me as a first class plot that could have been better executed. The movie is very much like a thoroughbred horse with a rookie jockey. The stellar potential is there if slightly inaccessible and disjointed. It's a budget film and it shows. That said, it may yet exceed its projections. I won't recommend it excitedly neither am I likely to rewatch it, but I'm not mad at it either. 6/10 P.S I didn't talk about Panam.
