The ‘yankirri’ travelled to the rockhole at Ngarlikurlangu to find water. This Jukurrpa story belongs to Jangala/Jampijinpa men and Nangala/Nampijinpa women. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, associated sites and other elements. Emus are usually represented by their ‘wirliya’ (footprints), arrow-like shapes that show them walking around Ngarlikurlangu eating ‘yakajirri’ (bush raisin). In the time of the Jukurrpa there was a fight at Ngarlikiurlangu between a ‘yankirri’ ancestor and Wardilyka (Australian bustard) ancestors over sharing the ‘yakajirri’. There is also a dance for this Jukurrpa that is performed during initiation ceremonies.

The material palette for Lindsay was inspired by the existing home mixed in with a clean yet warm modernist approach. With so much red brickwork found on-site, we wanted to use that material as a reference, informing decisions to use a red-veined marble, cardinal metalwork and vibrant joinery highlights. The sunken lounge also uses red brick as the flooring which provides a wonderful texture to the living space of the home. This change in materiality between the split levels resulted in a living area that feels quite rich and inviting, and allows for a seamless flow out to the alfresco, lawn and pool areas. 🔨 @formagroup_ 📷 @nils_koenning

Please enjoy these beautiful new Lorrkon🙏🙂 The evolution from a traditional coffin to a contemporary art form illustrates the dynamic and resilient nature of Aboriginal culture. The Lorrkon or bone pole coffin ceremony was the final ceremony in a sequence of mortuary rituals celebrated by the people of Arnhem Land. This ceremony involves the placing of the deceased’s bones into a hollow log which was decorated with painted clan designs and ceremonially placed into the ground where it remained until it slowly decayed over many years. The log is made from a termite-hollowed Stringybark tree and is decorated with totemic emblems. The western Arnhem Land version of the Lorrkkon ceremony involves the singing of sacred songs to the accompaniment of karlikarli, a pair of sacred boomerangs used as rhythm instruments. During the final evening of the ceremony, dancers decorate themselves with kapok down, or today, cotton wool and conduct much of the final segments of the ceremony in the secrecy of a restricted mens’ camp. The complete ceremony may stretch over a period of two weeks, but on the last night the bones of the deceased, which have been kept in a bark container or today wrapped in cloth and kept in a suitcase are taken out, are painted with red ochre and placed inside the hollow log. This ceremony may take place many years after the person has died. At first light on the final morning of the Lorrkkon ceremony, the men appear, coming out of their secret bush camp carrying the pole towards the women’s camp. The two groups call to each other using distinct ceremonial calls. The women have prepared a hole for the pole to be placed into and when it is stood upright, women in particular kinship relationships to the deceased dance around the pole in a jumping/shuffling motion. The Lorrkkon is then often covered with a tarpaulin and left to slowly decay. These beautiful works can be found in our Arnhem Land Art collection✨️

The old man would feign blindness and send the two boys hunting in search of meat. While they were gone he would hunt and eat anything that he caught before they returned. One day the sons returned with a kangaroo that they had caught after much tracking. Unfortunately the kangaroo was sacred to the ‘lungkarda’, unbeknown to the boys. In his anger the old man decided to punish his sons and the next time they went out, he put his fire stick to the ground and sent a huge bush fire after them which chased them for many miles, at times propelling them through the air. Although the boys beat out the flames, ‘lungkarda's’ special magic kept the fire alive and it re-appeared out of his blue-tongued lizard hole. Exhausted the boys were finally overcome by the flames.

Amber House is sited on the top of a sweeping coastal-grassland valley in Bundjalung Country. It is shouldered by ancient littoral forest and looks east over the Pacific Ocean. The bushrock base of the house seems to emerge from the earth and combines with the roofline to read as a pair of parallel lines set against the hillside. An almost transparent skin allows complete immersion with the private natural context, with regulated privacy where required. The kitchen was tiny and dysfunctional, there was no storage, the window frames were degraded and whilst we love terracotta, the tiles had to go. Magic new work by Tjimpuna Williams⚡️ This beautiful work shares the Piltati Tjukurpa which belongs to the ranges in far northern South Australia. It tells of two women, seen here with their piti munu wana (collecting bowls and digging sticks), who set out hunting and gradually draw further and further away from home. They dig burrow after burrow hoping to find small game. Their husbands follow them and transform into Wanampi, water snakes, to lie in wait for their wives in the water hole known as Piltati. When the woman approach they are startled by the Snake Men who leap up and swallow them whole. The four then become Wanampi together at Piltati. This large-scale painting is 220x143cm and can be found in our Dot Paintings collection✨️
