A zoomed in shot of the Clarendon tornado before it started to rope out. I made the call at that point to drop south and not play monkey in the middle between an intensifying hail core and a tornadic cell. Fun times! I’ve been able to chase some, but I put things on pause for a bit. Looks like this upcoming week is firing up and the end of the month is looking decent for the panhandle. Slowly but surely going through files and getting back to normal as well. I will be adding a new section on my website this summer on chase stories. The behind the scenes, random towns and rich little moments along the way with photographing storms. Even if you don’t hit a home run, there’s almost always a story to tell playing the game. 5 years ago today, I witnessed the most photogenic white tornado I've ever seen. Truthfully, I wish I could redo this day and just chase it by myself so I could have stayed in this place to photograph the tornado longer, instead of being yelled at to HURRY UP so we could try to get closer (and of course ended up missing much of the rope out). An important lesson with chasing I feel is sometimes you need to take a breath, soak in THIS PRESENT MOMENT, and truly appreciate it instead of constantly trying to rush for a closer shot. If there's time for that then great, but sometimes we have only precious seconds to capture a fleeting, beautiful moment. And we need to take advantage of it before it's gone. De ervaring om voor zo’n bui te staan is niet echt in woorden uit te leggen. Je voelt de energie in de lucht, je ziet indrukwekkende structuren en bliksem, je voelt de wind aanzetten en de vogels zijn onrustig. Dat, en dan ook nog de ‘perfecte’ plaat vastleggen. Dat wil dus niet altijd, zo ook bij deze foto. Dit zijn twee foto’s. De voorgrond is perfect, maar is van een mislukte chase. De lucht was van een van mijn meest favoriete chases, puur omdat het schitterende structuren met zich meebracht. De voorgrond daarentegen was niet zo indrukwekkend. De lucht past perfect bij de voorgrond van de mislukte chase. Tuurlijk, alles in 1 shot schieten is het doel en brengt nóg meer voldoening met zich mee. Maar soms herinner ik mijzelf eraan dat ik puur voor mijzelf aan het fotograferen ben. Ik weet dat de meningen verdeeld zijn over composites. Ik doe dan ook eigenlijk nooit composites. Maar zolang je dit erbij vermeldt, zie ik geen reden om het niet te delen als ik er blij mee ben. Want eerlijk is eerlijk, ik ben ontzettend blij met dit shot. Ik hou ervan om een mooie artistieke plaat als eindresultaat te hebben, waar ik graat naar terugkijk. Uiteraard streef ik naar het perfecte plaatje in 1 shot, maar je kan niet altijd 6 gooien.
