The vineyard went through its first shoot thinning. Canopy management is to attain balance between fruit and leaves. It also helps rid of weak and secondary shoots, maintain crop quantity and quality, improve air circulation and sun light, minimize risk of diseases, among other things. If shoot thinning isn’t done, the canopy can become overcrowded, which can reduce airflow, high humidity and extended damp periods and diseases. Here's another Sikorsky with a checkered past... UH-34D Seabat. This aircraft has had a broad history and with respect to all associated with this particular series of helicopters, our goal is to provide as much detail as we have access. The helo on display is a combination of several similar airframes. During the summer of 2016, Estrella Warbirds Museum acquired this Sikorsky helicopter to join its growing fleet. As you will note from the pictures below, it is a prime example of what our Restoration Crew faces when they undertake a new project. Completed late January, 2018, this helicopter was painted as a tribute to Marine HMM364 "Purple Foxes." YK17 was their first helicopter to be shot down in Viet Nam taking the lives of four crewmen. The military history of this particular helicopter has not been discovered other than it was the UH-34J Seabat version, and was withdrawn from military service in June of 1970 and was then registered as N85128 by an owner in Fairbanks, AK, but may have never been delivered. Eventually it was acquired by the Milestones of Flight Air Museum circa 2008. Almost immediately after the museum's June, 2015 closure, it was transferred to the Estrella Warbirds Museum in Paso Robles. This 2018 Carmenere from @dubostwinery has been one of may favorite hidden gem finds in all of Paso Robles. Coming from the Colbert vineyard, this wine is an easy drinking with a medium body. Dark fruits on dominate the palate but yet it’s still soft. Touches of blackberry and plum stand out while having a great balance with the acidity. Nothing that over powers the chicken thigh. Mostly grown in Chile nowadays, this varietal was once on the brink of extinction but survived because it was once thought to be Merlot. This fantastically structed wine from @topwinery is a true testament to the Rhône blend out of Paso Robles. Pulled from many vineyards around the west side, this wine exemplifies how serious Stanley takes the art of the blend. Being a 2017 vintage this wine is on the best California GSM’s out there. Bigger body than usual but the tannins did soften as it was decanted for nearly 4 hours. Paired with a garlic and herb pork tenderloin fresh off the grill along with some asparagus. 1965 Bell UH-1DD Iroquois "Huey" 65-10054. Upon arrival at Estrella Warbirds Museum, this particular Huey was originally painted in the exterior scheme as it was used when filming the movie "We Were Soldiers Once." In early 2019, the Huey was restored to it's original unit colors during combat action in Viet Nam. The Huey has several distinctive characteristics, including its rounded nose, its twin-bladed rotor, and the loud "whomp whomp" sound it makes in flight. It is a particularly noisy helicopter because, when in forward flight, the tip of the advancing rotor blade breaks the speed of sound, creating a small sonic boom. Anyone who has spent a sufficient amount of time working on, around or within the sound of a "Huey" develop a sense when one is coming, long before most people hear the initial distinctive sound which the rotor blades make. I had the opportunity to taste these gems from Saxum, Broken Stones 2002, 2004, and James Berry Vineyard 2017, The 2002 is one of their first vintages and is still holding strong. Deep, inky purple color, on the Nose, with Intense aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and blueberry, with hints of smoked meat, black pepper, and licorice. Full-bodied with robust tannins. Flavors of dark berries, cocoa, and espresso, complemented by earthy and spicy undertones. With a long, firm finish. The 2004 opened up to be elegant and delicious to savor all night. James Berry Vineyard 2017 With a deep garnet color, on the Nose aromas of red and black fruits, with floral notes of lavender and violets, along with hints of spice, cedar, and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with velvety tannins. Blackberry, raspberry, and cherry flavors intertwined with earthy and mineral elements—balanced acidity with a long, refined finish. Founded by Justin Smith, @saxumvineyards is renowned for producing some of California’s most highly sought-after wines. The winery focuses on Rhone varietals, emphasizing small-lot, handcrafted wines that showcase the unique terroir of Paso Robles.

Tablas Creek is one of the reasons Paso Robles is on the wine map and grapes like Picpoul are in your glass. A partnership between the Perrins (of Chateau de Beaucastel a la the incomparable Chateauneuf-du-Pape fame) and the Haas’ (of Vineyard Brands fame) launched in 1987, Tablas Creek is the brainchild and soul food of both families ever since. Tablas Creek pioneered organic, then regenerative farming, and brought numerous Rhone grapes into the U.S. for the first time via their nursery complex of greenhouses and shadehouses.They also helped wine geeks the world over understand and appreciate the potential of the Adelaida District, on the western side of Paso. By now, the incredible terroir—the shallow, rocky limestone soils similar to the CDP, the 1,500 in elevation, the Pacific Ocean’s influence—that delivers bright but fully mature grapes is well known, as are their once-obscure (to many U.S. wine lovers at least) grape obsessions. 1955 Sikorsky H-19-SI Chickasaw, SN 55-4943. This particular H-19D was previously reconstructed before arriving at Estrella Warbirds Museum had been assembled from three different H-19's: Below Cockpit from S/N 55-4943 (to include existing AC tag;), Tail Boom from S/N 53-4441, and Engine Compartment S/N 54-1421. Estrella Warbirds Museum acquired this H-19D (Chickasaw) helicopter early fall, 2016. The H-19D is a 1950's vintage helicopter that was used during the Korean War. This particular helicopter was formerly used by the US Forest Service and the US Army and has been on display previously with the Museum of Flight. The H-19 Chickasaw project was sponsored by William Hearst (Hearst Publishing Corp) as a tribute to George Hearst Jr., William's uncle. George Hearst Jr. flew the H-19 type helicopter in combat during the Korean War. Make sure you check out the mural rendition of this chopper on the end walls of Freedom Hall). The Estrella Warbirds Museum team restored the H-19 helicopter as a tribute to the Korean War veterans and to honor George Hearst Jr., for his service to his country.
