The Viceroy of Sicily initiated the construction, and called the triumphal arch the Austrian Gate. The locals were not convinced, and preferred to keep the original name, Porta Dell’ Aqulla, the “Eagle Gate.” However, they ended up calling it simply Porta Nuova, the “New Gate.” The name stuck. The gateway leads to Palermo’s famous Cassaro, the oldest street in the city. The facade facing Independence Square has four magnificent large supports, or atlases, carved with figures of the Moors defeated by Charles V. The inside of the arch is covered with some very attractive, if somewhat triumphal, decoration. Walking around the historic center you cannot miss it, but it is really worth taking a little time for a closer look. This current arch is actually the third version of the medieval city gate. The large arch was not just decorative; it was also used as a warehouse, which caught fire in 1667, destroying the structure. It was rebuilt in its final form in 1669. Inauguration of the “RE” exhibition, a collective that reflects on the abundance of images of the present and the effects of the virtual world by sixteen contemporary artists' interpretations. In an era in which the real and the virtual overlap, the artists reinterpret the contemporary world in a group show in the Sale Duca di Montalto of Palazzo Reale, in Palermo. The attempt to rewrite reality, which cannot ignore the need for "rebirth" (REbirth), "reconstruction" (REconstruction), and "restart" (REboot), as a recovery of a unapproved existence. There is a permanent exhibition of those finds found in the Royal Palace during the excavations of 1984, giving prestige to the work of the archaeologist Roa Camerata Scovazzo, as well as intact and emblematic finds from the Punic period. In particular there is the entire funerary equipment of one of the tombs of the Punic necropolis, found in Palermo during the excavations of 1953. There are also finds that bear witness to the Punic, Islamic and Norman-Swabian periods. The Archaeological Itinerary therefore embraces an extended period and recounts over two thousand five hundred years of history, from the foundation of the city with the Punics up to the Norman-Swabian phase. Alongside the finds, to ensure a fruitful journey, there is also a large didactic apparatus with insights, among others, concerning the Castrum Superius, the urban fortifications underlying the Sale Duca di Montalto, to then deepen the Punic-Roman walls of Palermo - fundamental element in the landscape of ancient and medieval cities. And then again the Punic Necropolis , of which the first archaeological finds date back to 1746 during the excavations for the construction of the Real Albergo dei Poveri and continued during the nineteenth century. Last but not least, the Norman-Swabian fortifications, undertaken at the end of the year 1072.
