The Star Pyramid, or Salem Rock is a massive sandstone pyramid dominating the area below Stirling Castle beside the Old Town Cemetery. The pyramid is enclosed by wrought iron railings and stands on a grassy mound. The pyramid is on a raised plinth of four steps and has a set of steps to the south which are flanked by two stone globes. At one time the globes would have been topped with bronze eagles. Marble Bibles rest on the base of each face of the pyramid, the faces are also carved with references to various Biblical texts. Spreading over the valley between Stirling Castle and the Church of the Holy Rude the Old Town Cemetery is of outstanding importance. The monuments and the personalities they commemorate have been central to both the history of Stirling and to Scotland as a whole. A burial-ground has occupied the site since 1129, when the first Dominican chapel was built here. Those seeking 12th-century tombs, though, are destined for disappointment. For most of Stirling’s history those who could afford such memorials were laid to rest in Elite Lairs beneath the church floor and therefore the oldest gravestone is dated 1579: a large, flat ‘Throughstane’, marked with the arms of the Gibb family, the initials of the deceased, and the symbol of a hammer, mallet and chisel appropriate to a family of Masons and Quarriers, but no name. In amongst the gravestones of this centuries-old churchyard is a grave that depicts a nefarious trade linked to the medical profession. Prior to the Anatomy Act of 1832, medical institutions were only allowed to dissect corpses that came from the gallows. A growth in the number of schools that taught the sciences, saw an increased demand for bodies that outweighed those that went to the gallows. Resurrectionists, or body snatchers, made it their professions to supply the medical schools with the much-needed materials. This grave marker shows a thief lifting the dead body out of the grave. It’s interesting to note that most Body Snatchers would steal only the corpse, as there were laws prohibiting the theft of possessions such as jewelry, but there were no laws against taking the body. A specimen in “good condition” could be worth 10 shillings, or a few months’ wages in today’s terms. There is no information as to whom this tombstone belongs, nor is there any record on why such a scene was chosen. In among the headstones in Stirling’s Old Town Cemetery is a rather large and ornate greenhouse that surrounds three stone figures. One is that of an angel. The other two represent two sisters, one who was brutally massacred during a period of Scottish history known as the “Killing Time". Margaret and Agnes Wilson were two teenage sisters who lived in Newton Stewart near Wigtown. They were both devout Covenanters and firm believers in the Presbyterian faith. The Wilson sisters were both tried and found guilty for refusing to pledge allegiance to King James VII. Me sentía obligado a visitar Stirling, por su brava historia de independencia escocesa. Si algo aprendí allí es que los cementerios no tienen nada que ver con los de mi ciudad. Encalados de un blanco hipócrita, los nichos se erigen como ciudades tristes. Siempre he comentado en petit comité los recuerdos que tengo de estas ceremonias. Un discurso manido en una iglesia seca,con poca luz, y el sonido de los repellones de la espátula encolando la tapa que cierra el nicho. Horrible, artificial. Sé que en muchos sitios del norte aún se entierra -EN tierra- pero nunca los visité hasta que fui a Escocia. Allí se respira un ambiente que resulta más romántico, quizá por culpa también de haber leído Drácula, Sherlock H o Frankenstein. Desde luego, una muerte nunca es agradable, pero el contexto natural, y esa rica tradición de echar un "mostrá" de tierra cada uno creo que lo hace más tolerable que esta práctica del nicho. En este caso, de todas formas, se trata del Old Town Cemetery de una ciudad que me pareció especialmente encantadora, tremendamente histórica. Comencé a ver "Las Crónicas de Frankenstein" que me agrada bastante -***SPOILER ALERT START*** //al menos Sean Bean tras morir otra vez, resucita esta vez// ***SPOILER ALERT END*** y recordé esta foto. Fue de película. Recordé estar fotografiando la faz de una escultura angelical que mostraré más adelante, y sentir una ráfaga de viento. Hacía calor ese día, y cerré los ojos para disfrutarla. Al abrirlos, mis ojos enfocaron al fondo y vi una silueta así sentada. Me estremeció, no parecía moverse. A veces hay esculturas sedentes en bancos públicos; pero el lugar donde estaba no ayudaba a mi raciocinio.
