@lacma Hockey was the first show I remember seeing at the museum, outside of a childhood trip to King Tut in the 70s. I LOVED the show and bought a large poster of white flower with a blue background that hung in no less than 7 apartments and rentals in San Diego. I love his paintings of Los Angeles and his paintings with water. They remind me of the best parts of summer and somehow the feeling of youth and being in my 20s. Great Wall to Wall 🎨 Artist Judy Baca conceived “The Great Wall of Los Angeles” in 1975, collaborating with 400 youth and community members to depict important moments of LA history from the perspective of ‘those who have been erased from it,’ illustrating prehistoric times through the 1950s. Expanding the project into the 21st century with two new sections, Baca is now using the main gallery of the Resnick Pavilion as her studio — and I had the rare opportunity to see her at work! 😲 The second to last photo is a portion of the mural in progress back in December 2023, about 2 months in. “An Architecture of Possibility” ⚒️ I wasn’t familiar with artist Simone Leigh prior to seeing her new self-titled exhibition, and I was floored! Having represented the U.S. at the 2022 Venice Biennale, Leigh’s works on view here include selections from that art world shangri-la, and are jointly presented by LACMA and CAAM. It’s all organized by ICA Boston; the traveling exhibition opens today and will be sticking around Los Angeles through January 20, 2025. 💁🏻♂️ From the museum: “For more than two decades, Leigh has embraced a polyphonic artistic vocabulary informed by Black feminist thought, an intellectual tradition that values and centers the experiences of Black women. Lee Krasner, ‘Desert Moon’, 1955 (Collage of oil on paper on canvas, and oil on canvas) Lee Krasner’s work has previously been overshadowed by her link to her husband Jackson Pollock. She was friends with Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning, and studied with Hans Hofmann, who said of one of her paintings, “This is so good, you would never know it was done by a woman.” She is now considered a central figure in Abstract Expressionism. Exploring collage, ‘Desert Moon’ is made of carefully arranged snippets of the artist’s discarded paintings cut into vertical and biomorphic shapes. Krasner’s Abstract Expressionist canvases are packed with vibrant colour and pattern, and layers that overlap and intermingle. Lee Krasner (1908-1984) was born in Brooklyn, New York. Ed Moses, ‘Abstract Painting’ (Red #1), 1975-76 (Acrylic on gessoed canvas) 🟥 American artist Ed Moses (1926-2018) was one of Los Angeles’s most innovative painters and a central figure in the city’s art scene. Moses was born in Long Beach, CA. He intended to become a doctor but changed course and enrolled in UCLA’s MFA program. He was connected to L.A.’s legendary Ferus Gallery and the group of artists known as the “Cool School” which included Craig Kauffman, Ed Ruscha, and Larry Bell. Friendships also included architect Frank Gehry, and artists Vija Celmins, Alexis Smith, Joe Goode, and James Hayward. Moses embraced the creative process, preferring the simple descriptive “painter” or “mark maker” to that of “artist”. He explored the possibilities of abstract painting over his long and productive career, working into his 90s in his Venice studio. Hanging out in LA the past few days. Yesterday we visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the La Brea Tar Pits (our first time for that-STINKY!), Barnsdall Art Park, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, and Salt and Straw in Silverlake (strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper - yum).
