CLARIFY EXPECTATIONS First, it’s wise to make sure you’re clear on what’s expected of you. If you haven’t discussed expectations with your manager recently, schedule an appointment to do so. Publicist secrets from Season 1 of STRANGER THINGS! ⚡️ Let me tell you something about launching STRANGER THINGS, it wasn’t easy. So much planning, so much brain 🧠 power building the PR strategy, and then so much work executing on it. @britwhiteford and I were in the trenches together and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. 🤍 Press wanted Winona, who is not only an icon but was making her television debut in the series (she had always done film), but we KNEW that the breakouts were the kids and that Winona wasn’t going to do a lot. We worked so hard to break out those kids. We worked with our visual communications pro, @morganomalley, to build out a visual communication plan to showcase these kids in dynamic ways through photo and video. We took them to New York to do meet & greets with talent bookers and long lead editors, so they could get a feel for them, b/c we knew that if we could get them in front of these decision makers, they were going to be wowed and have a better understanding of who they were and what they could bring to their outlet once we premiered. We pitched HARD and never gave up pitching these kids. 💪 These four press hits are special memories for me b/c of how hard I worked. Passing on offers. It’s something that both press and publicists do. Press pass on pitches that are sent to them by publicists. Publicists pass on requests from press. 🚫 When I moved to Netflix and was launching original programming, I wasn’t used to passing on opportunities that came my way. I was creating these opportunities. Why would I pass on them? It made me uncomfortable. Saying yes to everything is a strategy, but I don’t necessarily think it’s the right strategy. I guess it depends on the outlet or client’s agenda and goals. When someone hires us to do a job, whether you’re a journalist/editor or publicist, we have to be discerning and make decisions that are in the best interest of our platform or client. That means you can’t always say yes, which means you aren’t going to make everybody happy. 😊 It’s a tough lesson to learn, but once you do, you get it. It’s nothing personal. 💛

How often do you receive requests to do informational calls from emerging filmmakers, aspiring publicists, students, or experienced executives transitioning careers? I get these requests a lot and enjoy doing them. I value human connection, kindness and helping each other brings me joy - it’s something I appreciated in my infancy. However, it’s disconcerting when people are unprepared for these meetings. I recently met with an emerging film producer who did everything right. He researched my background, led the discussion, and asked meaningful questions. This experience made me consider that some people might lack resources or proper coaching, so I put together a checklist to help prepare for such meetings: 1.) COME WITH INTENTIONAL QUESTIONS: Invest time in crafting questions that you can only get answers to by talking to them. 2.) DRIVE THE CONVERSATION: Since you requested the meeting, actively engage and lead the discussion. 3.) BE RESPECTFUL OF THEIR TIME: Stick to the agreed duration of the meeting. 4.) SAY THANK YOU: A follow-up thank you note (even via email) shows appreciation. 5.) EXTRA CREDIT: Impress them by sending your background information before the call. Anything else you’d add?
