°The samurai and the Cherry Blossom The samurai chose the cherry blossom as their symbol. The ephemeral cherry blossom whose relatively short, delicate, fragile existence closely resembles our own. The samurai considers himself a petal dropping off from the blossom from life into death. This brings us to the most difficult stage of mastery as I see it. We have let go of our ego, of our purpose, of ourselves. Now finally we are asked to let go of our fear of death. The samurai who fears death plagues his own mind in the idea before and during battle. This is dangerous for him, for his soul. In this fear he overcompensates and draws from the ego who wants to protect and to prove itself. The samurai who has accepted death knows that it is one and and the same with life. He believes in such things as an honourable death in battle. He has come to this point through years of practice, meditation and through spiritual struggle he grows ever more free of his own fears. What would it mean to be free from the fear of death? I read this quote in a book that beautifully describes our relationship with death: "Your death has not been waiting for your arrival at the appointed hour; it has, for all the years of your life, been racing towards you with the fierce velocity of time’s arrow. It cannot be evaded; it cannot be bargained with, deflected or placated." Would it not possibly be a relief to not fight against the inevitable and instead to see it in the periphery of your vision choosing only to give it your full focus when finally you are faced with its arrowhead? I have had a long relationship with death, from seeking it to be terrified of it I wonder what accepting it and being free of its hold might look like, what it might feel like. I enjoy the vision of the graceful, powerful and grounded warrior who knows their place in the stream of life and moves through battles fearlessly. Perhaps through embodying his or her principles I might come closer to fearlessness. °Of letting go of oneself With regards to dropping out of ego and purposefulness we are asked to let go of ourselves, to let go of our attachments to what was(the past), what will be(the future) and to remain purely in the present. Not the present of 5 seconds ago or of two minutes from now but NOW. As I write I must act as the archer not focused on striking the target or of loosing the arrow but in the flow of one motion leading to the next. Letting my fingers strike the keys as thought transforms into articulated word with little space inbetween. How will this thought tie into the next? I don't know. How will I tie this up into a neat conclusion? I don't know. I let go of the anxiety of what I should say or what I should think. I let myself be guided by the stream of consciousness. The the art of Zen acknowledges that attachment leads to suffering. By thinking too much about what I am saying and who will hear it and whether or not I am worthy of coming up with these thoughts and words I leave myself paralyzed by anxiety and I create my own suffering. There is a verse in the new testament where Jesus tells his disciples that when the time comes they will be required give their testimonies. He guides them not to dwell on what they will say or how they will say it but rather to trust that the words will be given to them when it is time. Whether or not you believe in Christianity, I think this is touching on the same idea that Zen is. Letting go means trusting. Trusting that in the moment when you need to you will move, you will strike, you will speak correctly and well. Letting go means trusting yourself. Do you trust yourself? It is not an easy thing to do. It requires belief and the courage to try slowly. When you trust and let go you will have time to not only see the details but understand your place in it. There is no need to live this way constantly. All you need do is to learn to pause throughout your day, or at the point of creation, or the point of tension. Let yourself trust, let yourself go. Things I've been working on lately: * *Here's a peek at the Iris mixed media piece I've been working on since the beginning of April. I had intended to have this done before the Irises finished blooming, but plans change, and the unexpected always happens. The background is only partially finished and will soon have glittery details added now that I created a cutout for more splattering fun. *I have been spending quite a lot of time outside lately in between rain showers, cleaning up my yard, and getting my vegetable garden ready for planting more veggies. I love watching zucchini and squashes sprout because of their big leaves. I will be adding these to the garden this weekend. *One year ago today, I had just scored a haul of cool antique frames to display my artwork in from a fantastic estate sale. I found the perfect frame to house my art piece "The Light Within" with minimal repairs, which made me so excited. I still need to frame this and my clown piece, but learning to cut glass and matte board for framing is still very high on my list of art things to do this year. The frame I'm using for my Iris piece also came from this estate sale.
