Cobb Landmarks created a mini-exhibit about Nellie Mae Rowe and her artwork as part of the Marietta Arts Council's traveling fence gallery. The panels will be displayed in Marietta this summer before traveling to cities throughout Cobb County through 2025. Nellie Mae Rowe was born in Fayette County, Georgia in 1900. Nellie’s father, formerly enslaved, was a blacksmith and farmer, and her mother was a skilled seamstress. At the age of 16, Nellie left the farm and married Ben Wheat. The couple moved to Vinings in Cobb County in 1930 and Nellie began domestic work. After Ben’s death, Nellie married Henry “Buddy” Rowe in 1936. After Henry died, Nellie devoted herself to the creation of art. Nellie used a variety of materials to create paintings, drawings, sculptures, and outdoor decorations. “When other people have things that they don’t want they throw them away, but not me; I’m going to make something,” she said. “I’ve been that way ever since I was a child. I would take nothing and make something of it.” Over the next few decades, thousands of people traveled to Vinings to see Nellie’s "playhouse." In 1976 Nellie’s work was featured in an exhibit at the Atlanta History Center titled Missing Pieces: Georgia Folk Art 1770–1976. It was there that art collector Judith Alexander first became aware of Nellie Mae Rowe’s work. Judith and Nellie soon became friends, and Judith began promoting Nellie’s artwork nationwide. Nellie continued to create art until her death in 1982. Although her playhouse was eventually torn down, Nellie’s art can be found in museums and collections throughout the United States and abroad. #DidYouKnow The Vann Cherokee Cabin is the oldest verifiable building in Cave Spring. It is listed as a National Trail of Tears site. Built in 1810, the Vann Cherokee Cabin was originally discovered beneath the dilapidated structure of the Green Hotel by a local citizen. Hotel rooms had been added to the cabin obscuring the original structure. After extensive research, the two-story, hand-hewed log cabin was verified to be built in by Avery Vann of the Cherokee Nation. #historic #logcabin #floydcountyga #georgiahistory #exploregeorgia #oldhouselove #archi_ologie #architecture #archidaily #southernliving #slhomes #fortheloveofoldhouses #historicpreservation #thisplacematters #history

Originally occupied by the Guale Indians who called the area Ospo, Jekyll Island can be the next stop on your #HistoricSummerVacation, where you can visit what used to be the Jekyll Island Club. The founder of Georgia, Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe, maintained an outpost on the island, before it was sold to the newly formed Jekyll Island Club, which was considered to be the most exclusive club in the US. A clubhouse was built on the island and members constructed private residences. For several decades, the Jekyll Island Club occupied the island, until 1942 when the US government ordered the area to be evacuated. The state of Georgia then purchased it, turning the island into a state park in 1947. Granted the status of National Historic Landmark District in 1978, the island is still open to the public today. On this day in 1971, Time magazine featured Jimmy Carter, the new Georgia governor, on its cover with the caption “Dixie Whistles a Different Tune.” In 1970, Carter had run as the candidate of the ordinary guy, making not-so-subtle racial appeals to White conservative Georgians. After winning, he did an about face during his inaugural address by denouncing racism and segregation. Outgoing Governor Lester Maddox said Georgians had been deceived and betrayed by Carter. But the man from Plains kept his word, promoting an ambitious reform agenda and appointing more women and minorities to state positions than all his predecessors combined. Slave Schedules & the information it provides is always jarring for me. I was just speaking about it with a fellow genealogist on here and how I really have to prepare myself when viewing these documents. • To see ancestors listed by gender and age—no name, no identity. Just trafficked property! It’s heartbreaking. But makes the purpose of this work necessary. • Enslaver: P W Prather (more information to come…) • • • #africandiaspora #americanhistory #genealogy #genealogist #familyresearch #georgiahistory

A major rehabilitation took place in the 1980s. Think you may have seen this home on TV years ago? #DidYouKnow The rescue and restoration of the Brown-Stetson-Sanford House in Milledgeville sparked a preservation movement throughout the county and led to the formation of the city's Downtown Historic District. It was built in 1825 for Dr. George A. Brown, who engaged renowned British architect John Marlor to design and construct an inn and tavern in the Milledgeville Federal style. In 1857, the building was purchased by Daniel Burrell Stetson to be used as a family home. It remained in the family for 93 years. The home was donated to the Old Capital Historical Society in 1966, when it was moved to its current location. #milledgeville #georgia #exploregeorgia #architecture #historicpreservation #georgiahistory #oldhouse

Jackie Robinson Birthplace - Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, into a family of sharecroppers in Cairo, Georgia. He was the youngest of five children born to Mallie (née McGriff) and Jerry Robinson, after siblings Edgar, Frank, Matthew (nicknamed “Mack”), and Willa Mae. His middle name honored former President Theodore Roosevelt, who died 25 days before Robinson was born. After Robinson’s father left the family in 1920, they moved to Pasadena, California. During his 10-year MLB career, Robinson won the inaugural Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, was an All-Star for six consecutive seasons from 1949 through 1954, and won the National League (NL) Most Valuable Player Award in 1949—the first black player so honored. Robinson played in six World Series and contributed to the Dodgers’ 1955 World Series championship. In 1997, Major League Baseball retired his uniform No. 42 across all major league teams; he was the first professional athlete in any sport to be so honored. MLB also adopted a new annual tradition, “Jackie Robinson Day”, for the first time on April 15, 2004, on which every player on every team wears No. 42. #georgiahistory #georgia #history #baseballhistory

Hidden Faces of Frederica: David Fellows Not all of our town's citizens arrived here on St Simons Island in the first few years of the colony. Many people came after the town and fort were already built and claimed lots in the town that had been abandoned or left by settlers previously. One such person is David Fellows. David Fellows came to Fort Frederica sometime around 1741, with his child and his brother to serve as the coxswain of Oglethorpe's cutter. A cutter is a small sailing craft that could also be rowed. As the coxswain it was Fellows' responsibility for setting the pace for the rowers. Fellows settled into a lot on the northern part of town that had previously been claimed by the Proctor family who had left Fort Frederica in 1740. Fellows lived with his child, brother, and other watermen on this lot for a short period of time, as by 1743 he was back in London working as coxswain on the Thames River. #facesoffrederica #history #georiga #georgiahistory #exploregeorgia #ssi #stsimonsisland #stsimonsislandga #goldenislands @fort_frederica_friends

Did You Know You Can Find Methodist History at Fort Pulaski? This monument, erected in 1950, commemorates John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. He landed on Cockspur Island in February 1736. Writing on the Monument: Top: “John Wesley Landed in America on this island February 6, 1736.” Middle Column: “From the Journal of John Wesley “Fri. 6. At about eight in the morning, I first set my foot on American ground. It was a small uninhabited island,…over against Tybee, called by the English Peeper Island. Mr. Oglethorpe led us through the Moorish land on the shore to a rising ground,…we chose an open place surrounded with myrtles, bays, and cedars, which sheltered us both from the sun and wind and called our little flock together to prayers.” Column base: “Erected in 1950 By The Georgia Society of Colonial Dames of America to commemorate John Wesley’s Association with the Colony of Georgia #trinitychurchsavannah #visitsavannah #unitedmethodistchurch #JohnWesley #Methodism #historicalmonuments #CockspurIsland #GeorgiaHistory #ColonialDames #AmericanMethodism #ReligiousHeritage #HistoricLandmark #SavannahGA #WesleyLegacy #FaithHistory #MethodistRoots #HistoricCommemoration

"What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it's the size of the fight in the dog." President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States and had been supreme commander of Allied forces in western Europe during World War II. During his Presidency, Eisenhower was a frequent visitor to Thomasville, Georgia and on his visits, he would enjoy the excellent quail hunting and the gracious hospitality of Elisabeth Ireland Poe at Pebble Hill Plantation. 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 Today marks Memorial Day, a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. This solemn day is dedicated to honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day emerged in the aftermath of the American Civil War as a time to adorn the graves of fallen soldiers. Across the nation, ceremonies take place at military graveyards, cemeteries, and memorials, while military-themed parades add to the commemorative spirit. In remembrance of those who served, the Virtual Vault houses the "World War I casualties’ scrapbooks," which contain records of Georgians who either perished or were wounded during the Great War. Among them are individuals who succumbed not only to battle wounds but also to illness, even on home soil. You can view the collection here: https://vault.georgiaarchives.org/digital/collection/p17154coll7. #MemorialDay #GeorgiaHistory #Georgia

Chesser Island Homestead at the Folkston, Georgia entrance to the Okefenokee Swamp. 🐊 Oh the Okefenokee! I am originally from Waycross, Georgia (which you probably knew from my post about Southern Forest World) so the swamp is a big part of my childhood memories and it’s still one of my favorite spots to visit whenever I’m down that way. The swamp has several entrances, including the one in Waycross and one near Valdosta, Georgia. The latter is Steven Foster State Park and that park is dark sky certified. However, we will get to those another time! Lots of swamp to go ‘round. Chesser Island Homestead is a true slice of life for non-native settlers from the 1800’s to the mid-70’s when the Chesser family finally left the land. There’s a syrup shed, chicken coop, corncrib, hogpen, smokehouse and other out buildings that still have everything from jars of mystery vegetables to stacks of old cast iron kettles. Surrounding the home is a sandy lot that they used to spot animals tracks and to help reduce fire danger from the swamp during dry months. The house and its many additions still stand today, and it’s fully furnished with items donated by the Chesser family. While many of the buildings, the land and the boardwalks are open to the public, the house is only open during specific times when a ranger is on duty. I would suggest giving the park a call first if you want to tour the home! And if you want to continue your explorations after the Chesser Family Homestead, then you can rent boats or kayaks, take swamp tours, explore more boardwalks, go birding, etc. The park has a lot to offer. #ExploreGeorgia #RoadsideAdventures #GeorgiaJourneys #SouthernRoadside #GeorgiaVibes #HiddenGeorgia #RoadsideMarvels #GeorgiaGems #SouthernEscapes #GeorgiaBound #RoadsideWonderland #DiscoverGeorgia #GeorgiaTrails #SouthernSights #GeorgiaExpedition #WanderGeorgia #GeorgiaGetaways #AdventureGeorgia #DiscoverTheSouth #GeorgiaMemories #anothersouthernroadsideattraction #georgiahistory #okefenokee #okefenokeeswamp

No other American steamship would cross the Atlantic for almost 30 years after the historic voyage that began on this day in 1819. The steamship Savannah, built in 1818, was a 320-ton hybrid equipped with a steam engine, paddlewheel, and sails. Because of the experimental nature of the voyage, the ship carried no freight or passengers. It reached Liverpool after 29 days, under steam for less than 90 hours. It would be years before steamships were economically practical, but the voyage proved that a steamship could cross the ocean. #DidYouKnow Fort Stewart traces its history back to November 1940, when the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Training Center was officially designated as Camp Stewart, in honor of General Daniel Stewart, a native of Liberty County who fought with Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox) during the Revolution. Since then, Fort Stewart's size and strategic location led to important roles in our Nation's defense. On April 25, 1996, the 3rd Infantry Division was activated at Fort Stewart. This began a new chapter in the history of Fort Stewart. #ARCP #FtStewart #SRU #AroundTheNation #NowYouKnow #GeorgiaHistory #MilitaryHistory #USArmy #HistoricalFacts #MilitaryHeritage #ArmyLife #3ID

Finding an old house with so many original features was amazing! Finding an old house that has a known connection to the Revolutionary war, the Battle of Yorktown, and the Marquis de Lafayette as well as Dr. Crawford Long who discovered anesthesia, was way beyond! (This weeks #52weeksofhome theme is “history”.) . The Long house was built by Thomas Long, the grandson of Samuel Long (grave marker pictured and located nearby). Samuel was an Irish immigrant who lived in Pennsylvania and was with the Pennsylvania Militia in the Revolutionary War. His regiment was present at the Battle of Yorktown under General Lafayette when Cornwallis surrendered. After the war his family moved to Georgia. . Additionally, Dr. Long was the uncle to Thomas Long. There is a statue of Dr. Long in a nearby town where he was from and even a Crawford Long Museum which we hope to visit in the near future! . . I believe we are the fourth family to own the house. I haven’t yet researched the families connection to the civil war, but I intend to! . Such an honor to be a brief custodian and small part of the history and lineage of this amazing house. #52weeksofhome21x24 . . #historichomes #history #georgiahistory #revolutionarywar #anesthesia #marquisdelafayette #historichouse #preserveourhistory #preservation #historichomes #historicpreservation

Swipe to see before and after images showing conservation work done on portraits of former Georgia governors James Habersham, Sr., and John Houstoun. Both served in the 1770s, a tumultuous decade marked by the start of the American Revolution. Loyal to Britain, James Habersham, Sr., served as acting governor under the British royal government during Governor James Wright’s absence in London. John Houstoun was one of five delegates that represented Georgia in the Second Continental Congress and later served two terms as governor, in 1778 and again in 1784. Search the record numbers at our link in bio to take a closer look at both portraits in the GHS collection. Pictured: Portrait of James Habersham, Sr., GHS 1361-AF-045. It’s National Historic Preservation Month, and ACHP staff members are sharing their favorite historic sites. Today, Rodney Parker Jr., Program Analyst and Bureau of Land Management Liaison, takes us to Georgia: "I wanted to share with you one of my favorite historical places, the Hogg Hummock (Hog Hammock) Historic District on Sapelo Island, Georgia. This enchanting locale is not only a place of serene beauty but also a location of profound cultural and historical significance as one of the few remaining Gullah/Geechee communities in the South that can directly trace its connection to West Africans roots. The district is an essential place for understanding the resilience and cultural retention of African traditions by its residents, evident in traditional practices, Gullah language spoken by its residents, and the cultural festivals that celebrate and educate others about this unique heritage. The community’s steadfast efforts to maintain their land and culture amidst the pressures of modern development and tourism stand as a testament to their steadfastness and pride. "Visiting Hogg Hummock is a journey back in time, where one can experience firsthand the simplicity and strength of community living, intimately tied to retaining cultural traditions. The picturesque landscapes, historic structures, and the warm, welcoming people make it a truly remarkable place that connects the past with the present." #achp #historicpreservation #historicpreservationmonth #preservationmonth #georgiahistory @georgiashpo @thegeorgiatrust @ga_historical_society #gullahgeechee

Hidden Faces of Frederica: Thomas Louch Thomas Louch departed England in September 1741 bound for the New Colony of Georgia, and arrived at Fort Frederica in December. Louch appears to have left his wife and child behind in England, though records indicate he intended to bring them with him. He perhaps was trying get settled in Georgia prior to having them sent over. Louch was a butcher, and set up a clapboard hut for himself on the lot adjacent to the main entrance of the town. Louch would have worked in the "flesh market," or what we would call a butcher shop or meat market, selling fresh meat and game to the towns citizens. Louch seems to not have been very successful here in the new community, as a year and a half after arriving he left the town. Whether he returned to England is unknown. #facesoffrederica #history #georgia #georgiahistory #ssi #stsimonsisland #stsimonsislandga #goldenisles #exploregeorgia #findyourpark @fort_frederica_friends

2024 Preservation Award Winner! Designed in the Spanish Revival style by noted architect Francis L. Abreu, the Visitors Club was constructed in 1931 as a tourist welcome center for the Brunswick Board of Trade. Used as a welcome center until 2012, the building faced deterioration until a collaborative preservation effort revived its historic charm. Initiated in 2019 by the Visitors Club Preservation Fund, the City of Brunswick and the Torras Foundation, the preservation project aimed at restoring the building's original design. The project included roof repairs, window reglazing and reconstructing deteriorated elements, including porch railings and the iconic weathervane that sat on the cupola of the building. Original light fixtures were cleaned and rewired and the wood trim on the exterior was repainted its original color. For decades, the Visitors Club has welcomed both visitors and residents of St. Simons Island. The restoration of this historic landmark resonates with community members and visitors alike as a source of pride for the people of Brunswick. #georgia #historicpreservation #architecture #savingplacees #preservationawards2024 #georgiahistory
