My first time focus stacking with macro using a old focus rail my son gave me. Focus stacking takes several images that are focused on different parts of the object and combines them together in a program. I used Photoshop for this one. The first shot I took was focusing on the petals in the front, then took about eight more shots focusing from front to back. Macro has a very limited depth of field (what's in focus), so in order to get the whole flower (or object) in focus it's good to focus stack. This was my first attempt and using a tripod and the rail helped. I did try hand-holding today and though it was good, I definitely need more practice. Perhaps the most beautiful estate in Sintra is one of its least visited. Making time to visit Monserrate is removing yourself from Sintra’s crowds and finding the mountain mood and that attracted people to this part of Portugal in the first place. Sintra’s Greatest Hit #4: Monserrate. Monserrate is called a palace although it never was royal. A wealthy 19th century British family fell in love with the wooded hills and built a home in a style inspired by the Venetians, the Moors, and their royal neighbors. Quick backstory: a 16th century monk built a small monastery here that was leveled by the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The beauty of the hillsides soon attracted other tenants including British writer William Beckford, who started the gardens, and the poet Lord Byron, who paid tribute to Monserrate in, of course, a poem. In 1863, enter British businessman Sir Francis Cook. He transformed the home into the marvelous mix of styles we see today. When his neighbor, Portuguese King Ferdinand II, created a park around the royal Pena Palace estate, Cook plotted a park around Monserrate. It remains one of the finest botanical gardens in Portugal. The most elegant of parties with glamorous guests were hosted here by the Cook family. Finally, post-WWII, the estate was abandoned, furnishings auctioned, and the estate sat neglected. In 2000, Parques de Sintra began a decade of painstaking renovations. What we visited this week is a spectacular 19th century coastal mountain estate restored to its days of splendor amid a peaceful, garden setting. If you visit Sintra, plan to make the short trip to Monserrate. h o b b i e s. Do you have something on your bucket list *hobby-wise* that you’ve always wanted to do? Mine has always been painting. Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved original art. I drew + drew when I was a tween + as I’ve gotten older, have been drawn to painted art (well, antique oils from France, but that’s not here nor there… 🤪). So! In an effort to stir up the creativity within, I bought a paint by numbers kit + am jumping in feet first. I have no idea if I’ll like it/love it/hate it. But that’s the whole point, right? Woman: Look my bird, there are some pretty gloomy clouds up there. Bird: Yes, they're hard to miss. Are you having trouble with the weather, dear? Woman: Ha, yes, somehow. It seems like the sky wanted to change its color on me, but that was definitely not my plan! But it tried anyway and hurt me in the process. Bird: Oh, that sounds like a little dispute with the elements. What happened? Woman: Well, it seems the sky thought it could impose its dark clouds on me. But that was a bit too much for me. So, I fled here to the pier to escape the drama. Bird: I understand your annoyance. But remember, black clouds are not the true essence of the sky. Don't define it by that alone, or you'll become a black cloud yourself. Woman: You're right, bird. Sometimes we just have to fly through the storms to rediscover the true blue of the sky. Bird: Exactly! And don't forget that rain also has its beauty. With its elaborate Ministry of Agriculture, the Russian city of Kazan has created a stunning building that marries artistry with function. The eclectic piece of architecture is filled with symbolism, but it's the 65-foot-tall bronze tree that is the building's showstopper.
