Marcus Aurelius suggested that by cultivating a strong inner citadel, one may maintain tranquility and resilience in the face of life’s challenges, reminding himself: “For nowhere can a man find a retreat more full of peace or more free from care than his own soul—above all, when he has such rules of conduct that he need only look into them again to be at perfect ease.” I believe this begins by collecting a record of all the ways in which you observe the hidden connections between things which appear unrelated. For if you can train yourself to see the order, to wrestle it back from the chaos of existence, then even your own sufferings and glories make sense as necessary parts of the other. This is the primary and essential work of the poet, the photographer, the artist. Morning insomnia is strong this week. Sometimes it’s worse than others. I can usually sleep until 4:30 am, but this week it has been 3:30 am daily. Oof. But I try to make the best of my free time in the early mornings. I read, study, learn something new, edit photos, write volumes about life, listen to neo classical music, exercise etc. It’s 5:24 am right now, the birds are starting to wake up, and I can see the outline of the trees against the indigo sky. The time when I became a fashion mogul for a day. Senegal 11/2023. I got the idea from fellow cyclists who bought cool local linen with flashy colors and patterns and took it to a local dressmaker to get a perfect set of clothes. I resisted the urge to do so until I got to my destination, Senegal, after some 4000km of cycling. This outfit was made by a woman who has a small family business with her son and daughter. It was eye-opening to see the part of the world where there are artisans and craftspeople in every corner. People who actually know how to build and repair stuff. I think we are slowly losing these skills as more and more of the work is outsourced and automated.
