My new setup for drawing, and my latest work in progress. I'm trying to consolidate a personal drawing process with favourite materials : water-soluble colour pencils (Graphitint and Inktense), blender pencils, electric eraser, electric pencil sharpener, easel. I like working on A2 sizes with the board propped on the easel, apply the pencils with varying intensity, blend the pigment with a blender, create highlights with the electric eraser, and then, finally, spray water with the spritzer very locally and delicately, in very brief sprays so that the colours intensify (it's magical to watch) and the paper doesn't buckle. It's a lovely sunny day here but today I only wanted to be in the studio and draw - the light is fantastic. What I Took vs What I *Used* - for my weekend stay at Alnmouth** Image 1: What I Took - 2 sketchbooks, 29 pencil crayons, 24 watercolour pencils, 4 watercolour crayons, 5 water filled brushes, spritz bottle, watercolour palette (not pictured), 10 soft pastels, 4 coloured pens, 2 black brush pens. Image 2: What I Used - x1 sketchbook, x1 pencil Thought documenting what I take, vs what I use to draw would be a fun/helpful way to get better at packing the right stuff/right amount of stuff! Bcs when I pack it’s so hard to slim it down. Then I get there & use 1 crayon 😂 which is fine! I’m just interested to see if making a habit of this changes anything… I’ll post some pics of my sketches this week. This Graphite stick makes me so joyful.It was given to me by a dear friend who spotted me looking at it longingly on his studio table.Hard and solid, almost metalic, it is the antithesis of the dusty or sticky earth I use in my drawings. I like the ritual of pulling it out of its protective bag. I love its physicality, that you hold it in your whole hand, unlike a pencil that you hold between your thumb and index finger. Here’s day 3 of my #INGDiscEye Takeover: Today I share the sorts of work I create on location. Initially, my drawing was much more representational, but over the last few years I have been drawing and mark making on location in much looser and more expressive ways. This is because I am trying to capture the feel and the energy of the places through their marks, shapes, lines and patterns. I work using a variety of media and in a variety of ways, on paper and in sketchbooks. I work on location both in black and white using inks, graphite and charcoal as well as colour using paints, inks, pastels (soft and oil), pencils and collage. My paper studies range from thumbnail drawings to mark making work on A2 sheets that get folded into sketchbooks. My sketchbook studies include working with watercolour and gouache in watercolour sketchbooks with mixed media in cartridge paper sketchbooks and collage studies that are often created in concertina sketchbooks. I create all my work in series so that for a given series I create a large number of studies on location. I have two current online courses that share the approaches I take to location studies: ‘Making your mark’ focuses on mark making approaches using the spring woodland to demonstrate. ‘Your sketchbook journey’ shares my sketchbook approaches on location and back in the studio for another of my project series: wild flora. I am also developing a third course: ‘Your collage compositions’. Do you draw or mark make? It’s a great way of getting absorbed in a subject and allowing our minds to free-wheel! (🇬🇧 see below) Bic-Kugelschreibermine in einem leeren Faber-Castell "PITT artist pen". Mit dem Kugelschreiber-Klassiker kann man gut zeichnen, mich stören aber die sechseckige Form und der harte durchsichtige Kunststoff, der in der Tasche schon mal brechen kann. Bei einem leeren "PITT artist pen" ziehe ich den Stopfen kräftig nach hinten raus und schneide vorne die Spitze ab. Ich setze den Cutter mit mäßigem Druck auf und rolle dann den Stift. Nach dem Abschneiden entferne ich die Spitze und vergrößere das Loch mit einem 3,5 mm-Bohrer. Dabei halte ich den Bohrer mit einer Zange fest und drehe den Stift - so kann man auch bohren. Damit die Mine im Stift nicht wackelt, rolle ich ein Stückchen Papiertaschentuch um die Mine und stopfe es im Hüllrohr fest. Nach dem Kürzen der Mine wird der Stopfen aufgesteckt. Die braune Minenspitze schwärze ich dann und das "S" kratze ich ab, damit ich weiß, in welchem Stift der Kuli ist. Mein Bic-PITT-Stift liegt sehr gut in der Hand, die Kappe schließt fest und durchbrechen kann er auch nicht. Bic ballpoint refill in an empty Faber-Castell PITT artist pen. You can draw well with the classic ballpoint pen, but I find the hexagonal shape and the hard transparent plastic, which can sometimes break in the pocket, annoying. With an empty "PITT artist pen", I pull out the stopper firmly to the back and cut off the tip at the front. I apply the cutter with moderate pressure and then roll the pen. After cutting, I remove the tip and enlarge the hole with a 3.5 mm drill. I hold the drill firmly with pliers and turn the pen - this also allows me to drill. To prevent the lead from wobbling in the pencil, I roll a piece of tissue paper around the lead and stuff it into the casing tube. After shortening the lead, the stopper is put in place. I then blacken the brown tip and scratch off the "S" so that I know which pen the Bic is in. My Bic PITT pen fits very well in the hand, the cap closes tightly and it can't break through. #bic #bicdrawing #drawingpencil #kugelschreiber #zeichenmaterial #drawingmaterials
