Initially, what I thought I saw was a bumblebee chilling on a leaf, but as I got closer, I realized that it was an impostor. This guy belongs to the genus Laphria, and members of this genus are known as bee-like robber flies. Adult Laphria are skilled predators often found perched in sunlit areas, waiting to catch prey on the wing. With their blade-like hypopharynx, sheathed by the proboscis, they inject neurotoxins and enzymes to paralyze and digest their prey. Paracantha culta, Wiedemann, 1830 Paracantha are golden-amber with multicolored, iridescent eyes. The front of the body may look polka-dotted with brown spots. Their wings have a lacy-looking, clear outer margin; the central area is tan and decorated with numerous dark-circled clear dots, eye spots that may be blue or rust-colored, and other markings. Their larvae develop within the flowerheads of thistles (Cirsium spp.), eating the immature thistle seeds. Peacock flies, in the family Tephritidae, are named for the banded, spotted, intricately patterned, and often brightly colored wings of many species. The front half of the bodies usually have noticeable, upright bristles. Specialists confirm their identifications in this group of small to medium-sized flies by studying details of the wing venation. Behavior helps to identify these flies: at rest, they often move their wings slowly up and down. The courtship dances and other behaviors of several species are interesting and easy to watch. Females may be identified by a pointed extension on their abdomen. This has to be one of the prettiest and definitely the largest fruit fly I've ever seen.
