So itโs Motherโs Day & although I have such complex and contrasting feelings about this day in what it evokes within me for many reasons - today I want to dedicate a little post to the dancing mammas. The ones of us who stopped dancing to be a mother, the ones who are still dancing, the ones who took time off to then come back for joys sake & not so much the career path. To the transition of all of that. To share your body with another little human, to let it serve that. (That in itself for a dancer is often riddled with complexity). To the change in career, to identity, to expansion and anchoring. To being totally in love with the little person you have given life to - and to feel all the other feels like โand now what to do with my dancing shoes? My dancing heart?โ In my own vulnerability- I love being a mother & my son is my world- and I cry hopelessly for the babies I lost l, in my deepest of moments - I wouldnโt change my role of mother for anything - AND I miss dancing around the world, AND I miss being able to dance every day - AND sometimes I grieve for the dancing human I once was - able to dedicate totally to my art & my body. Itโs ok to feel all the complexity. I also now dance for ME which is a blessing in itself that I have only found in its fullest expression since becoming a mother. ๐ To my fellow dancing mothers. I see you. The whole complex wonderful wholeness of you. ๐ And itโs ok to feel what you do. All of it. All of the shades of it. I saw, for the first time with my own eyes what I could not see before. A woman with equal amounts of strength and flexible softness, a woman who had worked hard and was actually quite good at what sheโd trained and worked in... After having my 2nd baby ( Bodhi ) I was contacted to do a shoot. My drive to say yes was purely my boys, to have something to show them of what mummy once did when I was more than just a widow Twanky taxi driver ๐๐คช A glimpse of me embracing one of the art forms that fuelled my passion and set my wings soaring to forge a successful career on stage before it was too late. How toโฆ How do I get a dancerโs body? Dancers come in all shapes and sizes! People seem to have this image in their head that dancers have a certain body type and shape, eat and drink certain things and amountsโฆ and that is completely wrong! ๐ซ I even fell victim to this! When I was 15 years old, I auditioned for a ballet and contemporary course but was unsuccessful. At the time used it as motivation to keep going and get better. ๐ช๐ป A couple years later, I auditioned again. And again I was unsuccessful. ๐ This time I decided to ask for feedback and I was told โyou have the wrong body type, your hips are too wideโ. ๐ฑ Shocked, upset, confused, unsettled! And yet again I used this as motivation. I decided that while I may not become professional, I was going to keep dancing because it was one of my loves! I decided that I would educate myself (and no Iโm not done learning) as much as I possibly could so I could pass on my knowledge and skills to as many people that would allow me to! ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ซ This mindset provided me with the opportunity to complete my ballet grading, to begin my dance teaching path at my dance school, to teach and work in America at a performing arts summer camp, to teach children and adults in Wales assisting with shows and competitions. And now, Iโm running my own classes here in Perth! If you want to have a dancerโs body, all you need to do is dance!
