This is good one. “The term “Diagnostic momentum“ comes up; Patrick Claybon would say there is no such thing as momentum. Let’s just say, when a diagnosis gets perpetuated in real time (“this is a urinary tract infection”, “this is failure to thrive” for example. This is not “momentum” ; this is time pressure, this is caring for many sick patients, this is smart people being overwhelmed. Take a break, rethink the situation, don’t carry on with a diagnosis that does not quite fit. I’m always surprised (and maybe I shouldn’t be knowing the research), about how much things get better with a good plan and time for it to work. When I see second opinions, a lot have had plans where they’ve pinged between providers and management plans the moment it doesn’t immediate ‘work’. Ironically leading to no consistent plan for recovery and a lot of lost time. Save you and your patient the time and worry.
