Why should you book your family photos more than 4 weeks in advance? Great question, let me tell you! There are many reasons really but here’s a few important ones: + Photographers calendars fill up. And YOUR calendar fills up! Trying to find dates that work for both parties can take months sometimes! + Planning takes time. Planning outfits takes time, picking locations, personalizing your session to your family. All of that takes time and energy from both parties and can be extremely stressful if you’re trying to do it all 2 weeks before your session. Trust me, looking for outfits at Old Navy the night before your session is not what you want to be doing. + It’s easier to budget. When you schedule things 2-3-4 months in advance you have plenty of time to break up payments or work on your budget to account for the session and anything else to go into it. I was stretched to the absolute capacity by this sweet little guy who was 9lbs 6oz when he was born just shy of 39 weeks. If I’m being completely honest, being in this new body with more extra skin than I’ve ever had after a pregnancy has honestly been really hard. As someone who’s always struggled with body image, knowing I’m the same weight I’ve been before but two clothing sizes larger than before when I was the same size has messed with my brain. After 33 years on the planet, even though I know that my value isn’t tied to my size, there is still a lifetime lot of societal brainwashing to undo in my brain. I think another thing that has been a struggle is just having a hard time finding clothes that don’t just fit, but fit comfortably and flatteringly because my body is shaped so differently right now. That being said, after experiencing a traumatic birth as my vitals crashed, and I felt like I was fading, the first thing I thought about was my kids and “I’m not going to get to say goodbye.” I can’t even think about it again without crying. I’m glad I am fine, but it put a lot of my silly worries into perspective. So, this year, I’m not letting my distorted perception of myself getting my way of being in the photos with my kids. It’s the same thing I preached to others, but do a really poor job practicing myself. At the end of the day, my kids don’t care how I look, they just love ME. And if, God forbid, something ever happened, I know that they would rather just have photos with their soft squishy mom than no photos at all. #motherhood #getinthepicture #iowaphotographer #cedarfallsphotographer #cedarvalleyphotographer #motherhoodsession #documentlife

One of my favorite things is when clients are chatting with me after our first session together and they say “you’re exactly the person you are on your social media! I feel like I already know you!” I am 100% the same person on the internet as I am in real life and I would love for you to feel like you know me before you show up to your session! So let me tell you a few things about me! 1. I’m currently obsessed with rewatching ER. I’ve watched start to finish multiple times but it’s just so good! 2. I have three kids. My oldest is 15! I know… how is that possible when in so young 😉 well, I can tell you! Anyways, my oldest is an angel. Now #2 + #3 are a different story.. how does someone get so lucky to have two loud, wild kids?! We’re very lucky. 3. I’ve been married 10 years this May! My husband is the opposite of me in many ways- Perfectionist type A, Conservative Catholic but for some reason we just work together. Our humor is the same and I think that’s what saves us. Sarcasm is our love language. 4. I live in sweatshirts, comfy tee’s and leggings but LOVE an opportunity to dress up and will absolutely use any chance to buy a fun new outfit to celebrate. 5. I hate coffee. This tends to surprise people mainly because my life is chaos. There’s a million things happening at all times and I don’t drink coffee to keep me going. My caffeine comes from pop- preferably a McDonald’s Coke or Starbucks lemonade refresher. Rain on your wedding day??? ☔️⛈️🌦️ Unknown weather on the day you’ve been planning for monthsssss can be so stressful - BUT it doesn’t have to be !! Some of my all time favorite photos have happened in the pouring rain (yes, will 100000% be down to run with you in the rain to get the shot !! 🫶) ! My advice? I have a really important life lesson to share today. You have something that no one else can offer. It’s you. No one else can BE YOU. Now can I tell you something else? You can’t be you and attract your ideal client if you’re doing exactly what “others” are doing. Sure it might save you time coming up with ideas but isn’t that the whole point of having your own business?! You won’t be successful if you aren’t being your authentic, genuine self and showing people who YOU are. •Do your clients know you and your personality? •When they show up to their session do they feel like they know you a bit already? •Will they show up and be confused by the version of you that they’re experiencing? Build a business that represents who you are and what you want to offer. Who cares what other people are doing or what you perceive as successful. Half the time stuff they’re posting isn’t nearly as successful as you’re thinking it is! Not to mention that most people can see right through someone being disingenuous. Build your brand and make sure it’s something you can be proud of.
