This has created "soil capping" preventing but certainly impeding this crops ability to germinate through the hard crust. Soil capping can be quite a significant issue; I've personally seen it affect an entire Canola field where it wasn't able to germinate and the grower had to resend - an unfortunate expense knowing the cost of Canola!! The National Observer reports David Cox, a former deputy director of Agriculture and Agrifood Canada raised glyphosate red flags 🚩 to peers and higher ups, challenging the party line that glyphosate was safe. Cox warned of financial and trade risks to Canada from continued use, saying the biotechnology agenda was driving policy: “For your sakes, please take this seriously if you haven’t yet. Never been clear to me if these [concerns] are dismissed because of the policy paradigm driving the biotechnology agenda … or that I am seen as an organic arguer defaming [glyphosate]. I am just revealing context based on evidence I get from various sources,” he wrote. According to Cox’s June 14, 2023, email, up to 90% of Canadian “fields and horticulture crops, and their soils, have long-term exposure from ongoing” glyphosate use.
