It's that time of the year again! 📚✏️ Join us in celebrating the start of a new academic year by tuning in to the latest episode of ARTiculated, Season 3, Episode 8: "Back to School: education, pedagogy, apprenticeship, and the arts." Artistic education takes many shapes, as artists pass down skills and traditions to see them transformed by new hands. In this episode, hear how the classroom shaped artists, both as learners and teachers. Stories include Anni Albers's descriptions of lessons with Paul Klee at the Bauhaus and her own teaching at Black Mountain College, Carmen Lomas Garza on the activism that shaped her time as a student teacher, and Lee Krasner's memorable training moments along her artistic journey among others. Carmen Lomas Garza has created narrative scenes comprising realistic snapshots of Mexican-American life, serving as counterpoints to negative representations of her community, often disseminated by the media. "Ofrenda para Antonio Lomas" is part of a traditional Día de los Muertos alter honoring her grandfather's memory. In this large relief, she symbolically transplants Antonio Lomas from working in his garden into the gallery, elevating her protagonist and the task he performs to heroic proportions. 📸 Ofrenda para Antonio Lomas (Offering for Antonio Lomas), 1995. . . . . #CarmenLomasGarza #ofrenda #lasercut #memory #family #contemporaryart #contemporarylatinoart #texas #austin #blantonmuseum #sculpture #latinoart #metal #installation #narrative #mexicanamerican #heritage #identity #illustration #drawing #papelpicado

Over the past few days we received some amazing donations! These are for books I am adding to the library tonight. Feel free to come check them out! I will be swapping out the kids books sometime soon because we received a large donation of kids books! I am still looking for more Spanish books but in the mean time we will have two Spanish books in our library. On the top left of this photo there is an amazing book by Jenny Lawson, who writes hilarious and possibly offensive books about her life and depression. I absolutely love her books. I'm so happy one of her books was graciously donated. #letspretendthisneverhappened #jennylawson On the top right is the Spanish version of John Green's books turtles all the way down. I am actually currently reading the English version of this book and I'm very happy that we have a Spanish copy for any Spanish readers in our area. #milveceshastasiempre #turtlesallthewaydown #johngreen Bottom left there is the history of Juneteenth. This book has a lot of amazing information on Juneteenth and I hope that people enjoy it. #juneteenth #history #arlishanorwood On the bottom right is in my family, this book is actually in English and in Spanish so if you really want to learn Spanish this is the perfect book for you to read. #inmyfamily #enmifamilia #carmenlomasgarza #newdonations #lfl #littlefreelibrary #books #literature #donations #newmexico #albuquerque #charter150487 #kirbystreetlittlefreelibrary #kirbystreetlibrary #sothankful

100 day project, 100 days of women artists, day 21. Carmen Lomas Garza (1948-) is todays artist. She grew up in Texas near the border in a Mexican-American family. Her mother was a painter and her grandmother designed embroidery patterns, Carmen loved watching her mom and grandma do this magical work. By 13, she knew she wanted to be an artist and began drawing every day. In school, Carmen was not allowed to speak Spanish, which later informed her work to combat racism. She went to Texas A & M, earning a BS in Art Education. She wanted to create art that showed her culture and was easily understood. She later earned an MEd from Juarez-Lincoln Grad School and an MA from SFState. Her very detailed narrative paintings show everyday life of Mexican Americans in a flat, folk art style. Carmen also does printmaking, public art and papercuts. ✂️She has illustrated 4 kids’ books 📚 , won NEA fellowships, exhibited her work at the Smithsonian, the Hirshhorn, the Whitney, the U of Texas, San Jose Museum of Art, San Antonio Museum, and others. An elementary school in Los Angeles, the Carmen Lomas Garza Primary Center, is named in her honor. She lives in San Francisco. My kids loved examining all the details in her beautiful work. I really like the way she paints trees 🌳, so I put a couple in the background. . . . #carmenlomasgarza #100dayproject #womanartist #5womenartists #makeartnotwar #mexicanamericanwoman #mexicanamerican #kidlitwomen #mexico🇲🇽 #america🇺🇸 #mexicanamericanartist #portrait #sketchbook #watercolorsketch #berkeleyartist #kierendutcher

This week’s featured artist for #HispanicHeritageMonth 🧡is Kingsville, TX native Carmen Lomas Garza. Kingsville is on the border between Mexico and the United States; Garza’s family and many of the families she grew up with in Kingsville are Mexican American. This community has informed much of her work. Garza is best known for her paintings and illustrations of everyday life, such as this depiction of a folk remedy for ear pain. The heat from the burning paper cone is believed to draw some of the pressure out of the patient’s ear. Of her work, Garza writes, “The Chicano Movement of the late 1960s inspired the dedication of my creativity to the depiction of special and everyday events in the lives of Mexican Americans based on my memories and experiences in South Texas. I saw the need to create images that would elicit recognition and appreciation among Mexican Americans, both adults and children, while at the same time serve as a source of education for others not familiar with our culture.” Garza has lived and worked in San Francisco, CA since the 1970s. In 1988, President Reagan enacted a public law to celebrate a 30-day Hispanic Heritage Month, starting on September 15, the independence day of five Central American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua). Within the month, other Latin American countries celebrate their independence as well. 🎉 Why do we celebrate the Hispanic community in the United States? According to the 2019 U.S. Census Bureau, there are 60.5 million Hispanics/Latinos in the United States or 18.4.percent of the country’s population. Hispanics or Latinos have contributed to American life since the American Revolution, fighting in every war since then. Latinos today continue to advance communities across the country as small business owners, veterans, teachers, and public servants, among many other professions. Hispanic Heritage Month allows us to recognize their achievements and contributions to our national story. Interested in learning more? Fantasy landscape and a glimpse into traditions and memories are windows into an artist's culture. This is something I want to share with my students this coming year to show how each person is special and unique and how a person can tell a story through art. . . . #artteacheronvacation #smithsonianmuseum #smithsonianartmuseum #smithsonianamericanartmuseum #washingtondc #dcmustsee #gilbertmagulujan #carmenlomasgarza #etching #aquatint #screenprint

⭐️ Carmen LOMAS GARZA draws on her experiences of everyday life in a close-knit Mexican-American community in Texas. ⭐️ In this 1989 picture, painted in her beautiful naïve folk-art style, LOMAS GARZA depicts a woman on a veranda applying a traditional earcandling treatment for earache. ⭐️ Born into a bilingual household in 1948 in Kingsville, Texas, LOMAS GARZA credits her parents for encouraging her to become an artist. ⭐️ “They started giving me money to buy my art supplies, sketchbooks, India ink, pencils. They’ve been invaluable, my first and best teachers”, she said during an interview in 1980. ⭐️ In addition, her mother freely shared stories, in the oral 💬 history tradition, about the family’s Mexican and Spanish ancestors, and LOMAS GARZA often uses these stories as source material in her drawings and paintings. ⭐️ She is a recipient of numerous awards, has illustrated books including ‘Chicano Voices’ (1975), joined the Con Safos Group of Chicano artists in San Antonio and has exhibited her work in galleries and museums across the United States. Gluing the paper covers over the holes. What I like about this craft is: more eggs to find, less candy before breakfast. Also no wasted hard boiled eggs tomorrow, since we’ve been collecting these shell for a few days. Flip through for the book that inspired us. #carmenlomasgarza #inmyfamily #cascarones

FAMILIA. Time to reflect. Family can be the single most important influence in a child's life. From the time of conception to their first breath on earth, children depend on parents and family to provide, love, care and meet all their needs. Parents are a child's first guide ❤️ What are the traditions and values that you want to pass on? We have already soaked up so much of how we were raised, now it’s time to bring oneself to reflect and become aware of what we want to pass on. The first time I think I saw myself in an illustration in a children’s book in English was in a short story by Carmen Lomas Garza. I was 8 and I remember very vividly thinking to myself, this is me. I hadn’t thought of that before then and forgot all about that image after, until I saw it again at around age 26 and it all came back to me. #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #childrensbooks #ownvoices #representationmatters #LatinaBookstagrammer #CarmenLomasGarza
