A settembre 2011, il nostro mondo è crollato quando gli è stata diagnosticata la leucemia linfoblastica acuta. Dopo aver affrontato questa terribile battaglia, a marzo 2015 è arrivata una recidiva che ci ha nuovamente sconvolti. Nel marzo 2019, una seconda recidiva ci ha messo di fronte a una realtà ancora più dura: l'unica speranza per Manfredi era un trapianto di midollo osseo. Il 27 giugno 2019, grazie a una donatrice iscritta al registro internazionale, una ragazza turca di 37 anni compatibile al 100%, Manfredi ha ricevuto il trapianto. Noi genitori, purtroppo, eravamo completamente incompatibili. Oggi, Manfredi continua i controlli medici e frequenta la quarta liceo scientifico di scienze applicate. Vederlo andare a scuola è una gioia immensa, ma il cammino per arrivarci è stato terribilmente difficile. Le notizie della malattia e delle recidive sono state devastanti. Come genitore, ti senti impotente e sopraffatto dalla paura ma trovare il donatore è stato un enorme sollievo. Con il tempo ci siamo resi conto che molte persone non capiscono veramente cosa comporti un trapianto. Non è affatto una passeggiata. Manfredi ha dimostrato una forza morale incredibile: non si è mai lamentato, anche se fisicamente ha sofferto molto. Le complicazioni e i cambiamenti dovuti al cortisone lo hanno trasformato, ma sapevamo che era temporaneo. Ho visto altre persone rifiorire dopo la cura, come se avessero una luce speciale dentro di loro. Ancora oggi, ovunque vada, chi non conosce la storia di Manfredi dice sempre che è un ragazzo eccezionale. E lo è davvero.
