Couple in spotlight..... A pair of White crested laughingthrush (Garrulax leucolophus) in an interesting light. The Sun was up a little in the sky, and light was dappling through the foliage surrounding the bird hide, when this small flock decided to visit. Since they keep moving in and out of light, it's rather tricky to expose them correctly. I think this came out nicely where they were exposed for the whites. Background was in shadow and as such has gone quite dark, and their body too is underexposed, blending it partly with the bg. Interrupted by a fly by..... The bird hide was seeing a tremendous activity that day. Birds came in large numbers, and by the afternoon, we had photographed close to 50 species. The heart, however, always asks for more. So then we became a little choosy, trying to find some behaviour or activity shots. That was when I got this one. A pair of Grey treepies (Dendrocitta formosae) were feeding side by side, when a female grey winged blackbird took a short flight across. The pair stopped just for a moment and watched her, before resuming. That is when I got this shot. The blue winged beauty..... The Blue winged minla (Actinodura cyanouroptera), also called blue winged siva, is a smallish bird from the Leiothrichidiae family. It was earlier placed in the genus Minla. It is a resident of montane forests from the north parts of Indian subcontinent to Vietnam in South East Asia. They are babbler like birds, and move in flocks, either of same species or as part of a mixed hunting party. For the most part, it is softly coloured, with pastel grey-blue head and underparts, and light, soft brown on sides and upper wings. The highlights are the bright blue outer wings and tail. In fact, the word cyanouroptera means blue wings and tail. Making noise.... The White throated laughingthrush (Pterorhinus albogularis) is, like most other laughingthrushes, a noisy bird. They are also quite social, and normally appear in flocks of about 15-20. They are native to the montane forests around Himalayas and also range upto Myanmar and Central China. They are regular visitors to the bird hides in the Himalayan foothills, and have a very peculiar way of appearing. Generally, one or two will quietly appear first, hopping through bushes and trees around. Then the rest of the flock will follow, but again, not allowed at a time - it's like a flow - they move through the hide. Back to birding after a while. This is the Cheer Pheasant sighted in Pangot, Uttarakhand A large, pale pheasant with a long tail, an untidy crest, and red skin around the eye. The male is pale gray, barred throughout, with thick black bands on the tail, a rust-colored lower back, and a dark belly. The female is browner with white streaks on the body, white bars on the tail, a rust-colored belly, and black spots on the breast. Shy, often found in small groups along steep, grassy hillsides in the Himalayas. On construction duty..... The Long tailed broadbill (Psarisomus dalhousiae) is an unmistakably colourful bird found in the Himalayas, but extends the range to southeast Asia. The helmet like colouration on it's head gives it a cartoonish look, and also makes people fondly call it helmet bird. For birds in the Indian Himalayas, April is the breeding season, and as we were there in the first week of April, we could see a nest building in progress. They build a suspended pear shaped nest from a tree branch. It is constructed from twigs, slender roots, grass and such other fibrous vegetation. The entrance is from the side, but it is usually covered up by leaves. On his way to adulthood.... The Golden naped or gold naped finch (Pyrrhoplectes epauletta) is a monotypical finch of montanr temperate forests. It is found in North East India, Nepal, Bhutan, parts of China and Myanmar. It has typical finch like features - a small, stout body, stocky beak and a longish tail. Male is black overall, with golden yellow nape and outer wing feathers. Female is brownish, with a hint of the golden nape. The juvenile male passes through different patterns of black and orange patches till it attains the plumage of adult. Just out of reach..... Sunbirds, like hummingbirds, are avid nectar lovers, though they also consume small insects, especially during breeding period, when their protein requirement is higher. The key difference is that hummingbirds hover near the flowers while sunbirds generally perch on a nearby branch for nectaring. That morning we had to leave early for a birding hotspot about 30 km away. I was one of the first ones to get ready. There was a little light coming on, and what better way to kill time than to get the camera and try to find some birds to photograph. First one to show up wa this female Green tailed sunbird (Aethopyga nipalensis). She perched on this twig, trying to stretch to reah the flowers above, when I got this shot. Pied wheatear.. The pied wheatear (Oenanthe pleschanka) is a wheatear, a small insectivorous passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family Turdidae, but is now more generally considered to be an Old World flycatcher (family Muscicapidae). This migratory central Asiatic wheatear occurs from the extreme southeast of Europe to China, and has been found wintering in India and northeastern Africa. It is a very rare vagrant to western Europe. The pied wheatear is native to Southeast Europe and Western Asia. The breeding range extends from Romania and Bulgaria to Siberia, Altai and Mongolia and southwards to the Caucasus, Transcaspia, Turkestan, Iran and Afghanistan. It occurs at altitudes of up to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) in the Altai and up to 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) in the Tien Shan. It migrates to Northeast Africa, passing through Southwest Asia on the way. In the breeding season it is found in rough open country, steppes with scant vegetation, stony slopes and hilly country. In its winter quarters it is found in similar locations with rock, scree and on plains with thorny scrub. It sometimes visits grassy areas and gardens.
