Here's your Friday Stoke Notes from Jared Koenig, SCLT Recreation Program Manager: It is time for some wonderful Wyoming weekend weather with wildflowers! Native wildflowers are blooming across the landscape and next to your favorite local trails. The Soldier Ridge Trail System is dry and is providing great views of the snow-capped peaks. Bonus: The slide on Double Eagle Trail is gone and the connector trail segment to The Link and Hidden Hoot has reopened!! The Green Room Trail is also dry and is great for a quick walk in town! Red Grade Trails are in great shape on the lower section, but soft spots and some mud still exists on the higher-up trails. The Tongue River Water Trail is still running at a higher level, so be prepared for swift water, debris, and obstacles in the river. A friendly reminder: Fresh Tracks Volunteer Nights will start at this Tuesday, June 4 from 6-7 pm at Double Eagle Trailhead. Here's your Stoke Notes from SCLT Recreation Program Manager Jared Koenig. Weekend adventure is ahead and you can have your pick of weather; sunshine, wind, rain, snow, or all of them at once! The Soldier Ridge System will dry out with enough wind and sunshine, but the on-and-off rain will result in Kicking Horse, The Link, and Double Eagle taking the longest. If you didnโt get enough snow during the winter, you can head up to Red Grade Trails. The flowers are starting to bloom at Base and Springs Traiheads. Expect wet and soggy conditions to increase with elevation. Fresh snow made its way to the Poverty Flat and Bear Gulch East Trailheads this week. Be careful if you try to get to Poverty Flat. The road to the trailhead is soft, though not nearly the mud bog it was before it was improved by the Bighorn National Forest last year. The Tongue River Water Trail is at a nice level for floating, but always be aware of weather surges and look for freshly fallen trees in the waterway. Don't forget to pick up a pocket nature guide. They'll help you ID many of the flowers, plants, birds, and bugs you'll see along the trails. Red Grade guides are available now at our office. Soldier Ridge Trail System guides will arrive in July. This #TBT, as we head into Memorial Day weekend, we honor the memory of the ten young airmen who lost their lives on Bomber Mountain on June 28, 1943. Sylvia Bruner, executive director of the @jimgatchellmemorialmuseum in Buffalo, did extensive research on these men's lives. โI think the main draw is the human interest about the crew,โ Bruner said. โWhen a person passes away at 100, we say they had a life well lived. When a young person dies, the unfairness of the situation hits us. Little lady can still be a big horn sheep. The Ewes are shepherding their young to the freshly thawed out grasslands to begin replenishing their body weight after a long hard winter in Jacksonville Hole, Wyoming. I loved seeing her standing in the middle of an old dirt backroad where I have never not seen the bighorns. Their coats are looking a little shabby as they begin to shed and free themselves up for the warmer weather. The weather here was a mixed bag with warmer weather and then a sudden snow storm. As solitary as she looks standing in the road, she isnโt actually a loner. I just finished reading Horns in the High Country. The author Andy Russell observed Bighorn sheep scraping highly colored rock lichen off boulders with their teeth. Apparently this slow-growing vegetation takes up to a century to cover a square inch and likely contains the nutrients sheep need in spring. I took this picture on my last sheep hunt in the Northern Rockies. My hunting partner found it amusing how absorbed I was in observing these intricate organisms. Here's your Friday Stoke Notes from SCLT Recreation Program Manager Jared Koenig: It was a harrowing day at Hidden Hoot Trail. The new two-wheel tractor and harrow made quick work of the cow tracks on the trail! It took Jared a few minutes to do what had taken 10 volunteers an hour to do!! Awesome! The weekend weather looks like a perfect time to help pack that tread, so head out for a ride, run, hike, or run and enjoy this gem on the edge of town. A friend of SCLT donated the tractor and harrow. It is one of the best investments made to help everyone enjoy our beautiful Bighorns backyard. Thank you for helping our community! The Soldier Ridge Trail System is dry and ready for you, but there are still some rough spots that we have not gotten to yet. The slide on Double Eagle is still there, but we expect to dig it out next week. The Red Grade Trails are dry in the lower sections with some snow lingering us you move higher in elevation. The Tongue River Water Trail is up to a good floatable level, but be aware of changing river conditions during the surge. The Dana Ave access is closed to vehicles while the City of Sheridan improves the area, and the Mill Park access remains closed. Also, weedeater-wielding Glenn is back at it cleaning up the trails of overgrowth, so if you see him out say โHi!โ We've also announced many new Discovery Sessions happening on the trails this summer. There is a geology hike and a plant walk at Bear Gulch, a bird walk at Red Grade's Base Trailhead, yoga along Big Goose Creek, and a mountain bike discovery night at The Green Room Trail, plus several Unplug programs, a wet meadow restoration, and we'll unveil the Iron Riders driving/cycling tour!
