To start, it wasn’t until this video, and the ones for “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” we’re released the following year, that album sales really took off. After Thriller’s premiere, Music artists everywhere saw new opportunities in the art of music videos. The industry saw videos go from being 3-5 mins long with imagery that sometimes had little to do with the song; to being full length short films that told a story within the song itself and had big budgets behind them. Michael specifically wanted something a long the lines of this scene from the film where the main character transforms into a four-legged beast right in front of the audience, in a rather jarring sequence.
