📍Pai Wir sind jetzt auf dem Weg zurück nach Chiang Mai und dann geht es nach Phuket ans Meer 🤩 ich wollte eigentlich nicht dorthin, jetzt hat unsere Route aber so am besten gepasst und ich bin gespannt, was mich erwartet! Zu Pai kann ich sagen: wow! Ich fand es einfach so super schön und anders. Mitten in den Bergen befindet sich das Dorf mit ca. 2000 Einwohnern. Ich würde sagen mindestens genauso viele Touristen 😅 So wie das immer an touristischen Orten ist: einerseits für einen selber Nice, weil man die Infrastruktur hat, veganes essen, andere Backpacker, viele Bars etc. andererseits lernt man so auch nicht unbedingt das authentischste Thailand kennen. Trotzdem war es nirgendwo überlaufen! Und auch der Vibe ist echt entspannt und Hippie geprägt. Überall gibt es diese tollen Bars mit live Musik & Hängematten. Eins habe ich jetzt gemerkt: Cocktails schmecken hier nicht 😂 Ich kann es auf jeden Fall empfehlen, von Chiang Mai sind es so 3 Stunden mit dem Van. Mehr als 2-3 Tage würde ich hier allerdings nicht bleiben. Johannesburg, South Africa 🇿🇦 Days 73-76: Days 73-74: Our long travel day (24 hrs 5 min of travel time) began at 3:30am in México City. We were officially heading to SA to visit my (Kaeley) family & be back in my second home! 🇿🇦 Arriving in Joburg was emotional but full of happy tears 🥹 Feeling quite delusional from our lack of sleep, we headed back to my cousin Shaun’s house for a chill evening of beers & the most delicious food cooked by the absolute best host @lililoveshair ❤️ The next day was an early start as Shaun & I were going diving 🤿 Day 75: With a 6am wake up, we hopped into the car to head to Miracle Waters. This dive spot is an old cast chrome mine surrounded by bush & views of the beautiful Magaliesberg mountain range. The depth of the lake is 33m where one can swim to and thru a bus, an airplane, & a variety other things sunk into the former mine’s depths. As we were the first to enter the lake this provided some pretty great visibility since no one had yet to kick up any silt (sorry to everyone who was diving after us 😅). This was a really special experience for me. Not only was I able to finally dive with Shaun but this was also the spot where our Uncle Andre instructed many scuba divers during his years as a dive instructor. I wish he could have been there with us but know he was there in spirit 🤍 We arrived back to the house after a fantastic morning of diving & proceeded to do what we saffas do best, drinking and braaing. After an afternoon African shower, we were treated to a beautiful sunset to end our first full day back in Africa. Day 76: Feeling the effects of the booze we drank the night before, we went to Fat Cake City for some much needed vetkoek, a South African fried dough with meat. We ordered the classic filled with minced curry. Bellies full, we stopped at Rutherford Forge to admire his custom hand-forged knives before stopping at Oriental Plaza for some shopping. At oriental plaza we grabbed a bite to eat & ordered a lamb bunny chow (Indian-South African fast food dish consisting of a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with curry). We then headed back to the house to relax as we had another exciting day planned!

Some people hike from monument to monument, but on the #AZT you can hike from bench to bench! #tgibenchday At the southern terminus, the Arizona-Mexico border, exists a bench to observe American imperialism. But when I revisited the image much later, I realized perhaps the bench predated the wall. That perhaps the bench is the reason the wall, which will obstruct the view, is the reason the wall ends where it does—for now. And that is an encouraging thought. The final bench is on the Arizona-Utah border, a beautiful place where, seemingly, you can see the state line in the difference between the red rocks of Utah and the yellow sandstone of Arizona. Nearing the end of this Africa overland trip, and coincidentally the 2 year anniversary since I began long term travelling, I find myself reminiscing back to the trip that began my love for both Africa, and backpacking: Ethiopia 2018 I was a 23 year old infected by wanderlust when I went to Ethiopia, having become fascinated by it over the past year. It was the first country I properly backpacked, and though the choice seemed surprising to many (isn't it dangerous there? Do they even have food? What if you get kidnapped and eaten? It looks boring, what's there even to do?), it made perfect sense to me. I wanted to travel for something different, something adventurous, something eye opening and perspective changing. In retrospect I was actually naive and under prepared. But I survived it enjoyably, and it served to change my priorities in life. Had circumstances allowed it, Ethiopia would've been a big part of this trip, exploring places both familiar and new. Amhara Land, Tigray, and Afar, all regions that I had travelled freely through in 2018 became war zones just two years later. Cities that I'd sipped coffee in became bombed ruins, the gorgeously dramatic countryside became rife with militias. In 2018 Ethiopia at least looked optimistic. The economy was the fastest growing in Africa, a new president seemed to herald change, and peace with Eritrea had just been achieved. Since then the country illustrated a few new lessons: that progress is neither linear nor guaranteed; that looks can be deceptive, and what's in the background of a country is often more important than what's in the immediate foreground; that a place that has the power to grab the heart also has the power to break it. Travel really is the saddest of all pleasures. I'm sure I will return to Ethiopia some day, to see its lakes of sulphur, and mystical rock cut churches, and baboon infested green highlands again. I'm equally sure that I'll find plenty of fresh adventures too. "Out of Africa, always something new," was how the Ancient Greeks and Romans described this often baffling, mystery riddled continent. It's a maxim that captures in full just why I love the place so much.
