Here are just a few highlights from this weekend’s Blue Mountains Writers Retreat hosted by our gentle warrior queen and guiding light @zannilouise 🌟 I felt like I won the lottery coming to this creative retreat. Two of my absolute illustration heroes @freyablackwood and @gusgordonbooks showed us their mesmerising art process and gave us precious insight into the kidlit industry. And my scribbling couldn’t keep up with all the wise words from the beautiful @_beckyoung_ from Scholastic Press. All three of them are so talented, yet so humble. And did I mention SO genuine and they gave their time SO generously - I will be forever grateful. Using ancient pottery techniques like hand building, coiling and pinch potting like our ancestors used to create beautiful functional vessels is an important part of my process. Not only does this assure my pieces aren’t massed produced but it also allows each piece to be unique, interesting and not one the same as the other. The Man, The Myth, The Mullet... @iamtervo Tervo is the result of an inability to sit still and just saying "yes" a lot. He wears many hats: (newly) a dad, a high school teacher, fine artist, muralist, public speaker and advocate for public art in Brisbane. Tervo is best known as the artist behind Brisbane City Council's Legal Street Art Practice Walls. Having come up through graffiti, he has no formal art education and has built a practice on the back of lessons learned in graffiti. Gaining recognition as a finalist in Brisbane Portrait Prize, Tervo is proud to feel welcome in both fine art and street art worlds, (despite his long mullet and refusal to dress nicely for fancy events). Last week I got asked how I prioritise time for creativity amongst all the other daily life tasks. I sat on this question for a while and thought that I could answer with the usual things like commitment to show up in your space like you would a work place, letting the family know your work hours so they can schedule around this and help out during those times, planning of course, but actually all of this aside, I show up consistently because I need to. I believe truly, that creativity and art is as necessary to living a full authentic, expressive, whole life, as it is to do yoga, grow a garden, raise a family and eat well. I will be going into this more deeply in my upcoming Autumn blog at the end of this week. But I wanted to ask you all, how do you prioritise creativity in your world?
