It's already been a week since the Art-A-Whirl buzz of activity. I am so grateful to my friends from Delano, Buffalo, Red Wing, Iowa and Minneapolis who showed up virtually and in person, checked out my display, shared some laughs and supported my art. This opportunity was made possible by artist and co-owner of @claysquared , Layl M. McDill opening up her space at the Flux Arts Building to me and 15 other artists. On the last day, one of the artists, Juanita Tatum, took a canvas she started around to the artists exhibiting at Flux Arts and had them add something to the painting. A great way to open up your creativity and let go of expectations of what art should be. Her mantra was something like, "Don't think, just start". Casket Arts Building! The Minneapolis Art-a-Whirl had contained some enjoyable exhibits. But what if you arrived on this beautiful blue scooter, parked in front of the Thorp building at 1618 Central Avenue NE? Or on foot? Wrapping up (literally) after Art-A-Whirl ‘24. As a ‘whirling’ newbie, it was more than I expected. I met Sam, a deaf man who kept looking over at me through the crowd, pointing to various paintings and touching his heart smiling. Eventually he came over and typed on his phone in caps: SUBLIME. Then there was Simon, an Ethiopian man around 20 who “dabbled in watercolor.” He visited me everyday just to look at the artwork some more and then shower me with praise. I met Lauren, a lovely brunette who spent over 30 minutes carefully studying the art, often going back over pieces she’d already seen. Lauren came to me crying saying how profoundly moved she was by everything, and how my work had inspired her to get back into painting. Then there was Jesse, a tall handsome sculptor who lauded me for making work that challenges people to think about things that make them uncomfortable, especially when so much art feels, in his words: “safe and benign.” College student Ethan mistook my work for NYC artist Alexis Rockman’s, an incredibly flattering compliment as Rockman inspired me to start painting back in 2011. Jenn was an environmental lawyer from Iowa who felt reinvigorated with her challenging work because of mine. She came back the next day just to introduce me to her parents. Joe was an airline pilot who thanked me for reminding him about the sacredness of all life, something he’d once felt but had recently forgotten as he flew passengers around the world. Jessica was a beautiful nurse in her 40s who beamed so much love at me over our 15-minute conversation that I had to finally turn away, telling her that she was “too much.” Sheepishly she told me as she left the gallery with her grown daughters that my work was “way out of her price range.” I heard that all weekend: “I can’t afford your work, but please don’t stop making it.” The immense love I received from total strangers was deeply humbling. I’ve never been thanked so many times in my life . . . but I didn’t make a cent. Still, I feel awfully rich just the same. Art A Whirl was phenomenal. This was the first time I experienced this annual event from the inside. I attended Art A Whirl for many years. Some years I only went in a few buildings. The Casket Arts, California Building and Solar Arts were a few buildings I would explore. Northrup King is the Art Building we tried to frequent but sometimes we ran out of energy. For many years I wanted an art studio space at the Northrup King, but I had a hard time getting in. I was blessed to finally get an opportunity to get space in December of last year. Jan, Blanca, Isabel and Diane are wonderful studio artists I share this space with and we get along famously. Art A Whirl is a huge event that I learned is not just about art, it is about the people. I had great conversations with many patrons and reconnected with ole friends and also made new friends over the long weekend. I did not realize how much energy this event would take so I am thankful to get recharged and ready for the next upcoming art event. For those who i connected with during Art A Whirl, I hope to see again soon.
