We left Qikiqtarjuaq to head out to our camp on the ice with a mix of excitement, hope and expectation - we were so fortunate that our team of guides picked up on fresh bear tracks about 45 minutes from camp and expertly (and speedily) got us in prime position. @saving_the_wild ‘Genetic Diversity and Sea Ice Part 2’ So yesterday we spoke about bears in Svalbard splitting in to four groups but how does this affect them? Without bears from different groups breeding the groups are taking on their own genetic signatures and the more unique genetics are dying out without being passed on. If the sea ice loss continues as predicted, these populations will become more isolated and there will be a further loss in genetic diversity. This is a problem as inbreeding often results in genetic combinations that are harmful to individuals and their ability to respond to diseases, anthropogenic pressures, and the change in their environment. This is an example of climate induced loss of genetic diversity that we have caused, this is not a natural event. The speed of the genetic differentiation is far too rapid for the polar bear to adapt, especially as we continue to do little to halt the effects of climate change. @saving_the_wild ‘Genetic Diversity and Sea Ice’ • Biodiversity is comprised of several layers starting with genes, then species and then the ecosystem. You probably know that climate change is putting polar bears at an increased risk of extinction due to the rapid alteration of their ecosystem, but did you know it’s also affecting their genetic diversity? Over the last two decades scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute have been testing the genetic data from polar bears on Svalbard where I recently visited. The data shows up to a 10% loss in genetic diversity caused by habitat fragmentation, the loss of sea ice cover. Sea ice is vital for polar bears as they rely on it for foraging, reproduction and movement. In recent years as the amount of sea ice has decreased more bears are staying put and only breeding with other bears in their immediate area. This has resulted in the polar bears on Svalbard fragmenting in to four distinct groups. Come back tomorrow for more…. ‘Breathe’ • A polar bear on the edge of the fast ice looking in to the water, his breath causing a ripple across its surface. It reminds me that sometimes as photographers we need to slow down, put the camera away and just enjoy such the moment. We can get caught up in getting THE image, you can hear shutters taking hundreds if not thousands of photos. I could hear Fred saying put the cameras down and enjoy the moment with the bear. I totally agree, you need to breathe it all in and have the memories in your head and heart, you’ll remember the experience so much more. At the edge of impermanence. On an icebreaker, we are constantly surrounded by the fragile state of permanence. We pass by a world that is constantly shifting, ebbing and flowing. ‘Paws For Thought’ • Where did he go? It’s hard to believe you can loose track of an animal as large as a polar bear. My Sony camera grip was playing up, telling me I had dead batteries even though they weren’t and I’d stupidly left the other body on the ships bridge. After discarding the grip I looked for the bear and saw everyone’s camera pointing down. I rushed down some stairs to see the polar bear was right next to us! I ran back up the stairs to where the polar bear was, leaning over the side of the ship he looked straight up at me. It was one of those moments. You start to realise how large they are, how immensely beautiful and you can see them thinking as they look at you, these are clever animals. From this angle I was able to shoot right down at his paw to capture this image. It’s one of my favourites, not an original idea but I still love it. So we are recently back from an excellent expedition to the arctic on Baffin Island looking for polar bears. ‘Playful Practice’ • This young male polar bear, maybe 5 or 6 years old gave us quite the performance. Repeatedly practicing for a seal hunt. Polar bears use their huge paws and weight to break into pupping dens or iced over breathing holes to hunt bearded and ringed seals. When the edge of the ice sheet would break away he would pounce in to the water and ‘attack’ the ice chunks biting in to them and rolling around. All good practice for when it’s the real thing. You can clearly see the huge size of his paws and claws, up to 12” in size, think the size of your dinner plate to give you a sense of scale! After a bumpy start our Arctic expedition started in earnest once we were in camp. Thankfully our luck changed when this young male bear was spotted close to an iceberg less than 5 minute from camp. As he was pretty relaxed we were able to get closer & move around to work out best position to capture both the bear & the iceberg to maximum impact. To spend all day with this bear, including lunch on the ice was a magical start to our expedition. These sweet Polar bears are found in Wapusk National Park south of Churchill, its accessibility is limited due to its remote location and an effort to preserve the park. The park is home to Cape Churchill, which is renowned as the best location in the world to view and photograph wild polar bears. The surreal world of Canadian Arctic!! We camped in the wild wild Nunavut region for 4 days, literally in the middle of nowhere, to witness the Polar Bear migration. Boy, was it Grand! Our cabin was located right by the frozen shores of the Hudson Bay. We took a bush plane from Churchill to this location and saw two polar bears on the temporary runway, even as we landed! Polar bears were moving from the south to the north were the bay was completely frozen, crossing our lone camp, day and night. Some of the bears were probably seeing humans for the first time. Every single polar bear came to check out our cabins which were protected by a namesake electric fence. Our super experienced guides, though equipped with firearms, were easily able to deter any polar bear that came too close to the fence, just with their soft but stern commands! During the afternoons when the coast was clear, we were taken out for walks to explore the tundra. Arctic hares and foxes were happily roaming around. Most of these entered our camps with no qualms about the fence! To top this, we had spectacular shows of the northern lights on All nights!! -24 degree temperatures did not stop us from singing and screaming in joy, as the aurora borealis danced along. While so much was happening outside in the Arctic tundra, there was an active cabin life too. All of us, including our guides and the lovely chef couple had our meals together, sharing our stories. Post dinner, we also played card games, Jenga and any other game we came up with. Even managed to teach some South Indian dance moves to our Inuit guides !! So we arrived two days ago. They said there hadn’t been any bears for 12 days. We went out yesterday and they had tracked one mother the day before. They found her again and we started out early to find a mom of the den with two babies. It was the most spectacular site I have ever seen. All the elements came together, and the light was especially beautiful. The cubs were breastfeeding most of the time but popped up to play every couple hours. We sat and waited and watched. And froze! Que mejor día para retomar, que el día internacional del oso polar 🤍 Boom💥, por fin dimos con nuestro objetivo... pudimos disfrutar del rey del Ártico, y no sólo de uno, si no de tres osos, los cuáles nos mantuvieron embobados durante horas a unos 3° bajo cero, cayéndonos nieve, pero daba igual, la emoción que sentimos fue tan brutal...y todo esto sobrepasando los 82° de latitud norte, algo que me parecía completamente impensable. Uno de los carnívoros terrestres más grandes y el superdepredador del Ártico, aunque considerado mamífero marino, tiene unas orejitas y una cola pequeñitas para mantener mejor el calor corporal, patas más largas que otros tanto para andar como para nadar, y un pelaje muy denso, que no es blanco como parece, en realidad es translúcido, con una piel negra para poder absorber mejor la radiación y aumentar el calor corporal. Se dice que el rey del ártico es el oso polar, pero las morsas son muy muy difíciles de matar, tienen una piel muy gruesa y dura, y superan a los osos en peso, además de sus impresionantes colmillos🧊 Éstos mamíferos marinos, pertenecientes a los pinnípedos, y dentro de éstos su familia es Odobenidae. Empiezo con uno de los fenómenos naturales que me impacta bastante, el sol de medianoche. Éste se puede ver en las regiones del norte de círculo polar ártico ,y en las regiones del hemisferio sur cercanas al polo, debido a la inclinación del eje de la Tierra. En los días de verano, el sol es visible las 24 horas del día.
