Last week, two Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch (Leucosticte tephrocotis) made a short pit-stop at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. Of all places, the pair were foraging along the off-leash dog area of the beach, amidst the large cruise and container ships passing through the Burrard Inlet. After dipping on them at English Bay and Delta the previous week, it was nice to finally see some of these dazzling finches! This species nests in high mountain ranges in barren alpine habitats. They mainly feed on seeds but eat more insects and their larvae during the summer when nesting. During the breeding season the bill turns black and turns yellowish-orange in winter. There are several subspecies of Gray-crowned Rosy-finch, with these Gray-headed or Hepburn's subspecies (L. t. littoralis) being the most prevalent in western BC, with extensive grey down the cheeks.
