#Todayin 2008 Trooper James Thompson, from B Squadron, 23 Special Air Service, was patrolling on foot as part of operations in the Musa Qal’eh area when he was caught in an explosion and tragically lost his life. His family released the following tribute to him: James Thompson was a loving son, brother and friend to many. His tragic and untimely death has devastated the family and touched all those who knew him. James was proud to be a soldier - he died doing the job that he loved and will be sadly missed by all. His Commanding Officer said: James Thompson was a special individual. A professional and reliable soldier in every respect - we were all privileged to serve alongside James who excelled in all that he did. His death has come as a great shock and he will be sadly missed by all his colleagues. Our thoughts are of course with his family, at this most difficult time. Again due to the nature of his unit, no further information was released. #Todayin 2003 Corporal David John Shepherd, of the Royal Air Force Police, died in Kuwait. He was aged 34. His death is believed to have been from natural causes. During a local ceremony the Elizabeth cross and scroll were given to his parents, Mr and Mrs Shepherd and their daughter Paula at a special presentation by Group Captain John Whitmell, Provost Marshal (RAF) on behalf of the Queen. Mr Whitmell said: “Cpl Shepherd was a fine, upstanding RAF Policeman, who embodied all that is good about the RAF. The loss of Cpl Shepherd was felt keenly by all his colleagues; however, we remain inspired by his commitment and sense of duty. He will not be forgotten.” Proud Mrs Shepherd said: “David was a unique and special person who can never be replaced; we are, however, immensely proud to have received this award in his place. REMEMBERING MATEA ESPERANZA On May 18th, 2009, officers responded to the report of a baby located in a dumpster at the Parkside Apartments. Sadly, the baby was deceased. This tragic event touched many employees in the department who are still members of the organization today. The parents were never identified, and the case remains unsolved. UCPD adopted the baby and named her Matea Esperanza out of respect for the newborn. "Matea" is derived from the Hebrew meaning “Gift from God,” and Esperanza is Spanish for “Hope.” In the Summer of 2017, UCPD POA purchased a permanent marker placed on her gravesite and unveiled it during a remembrance service at Chapel of the Chimes. This year she would have been turning 15 years old. Please take a moment to remember Matea on her birthday and all the UCPD employees who responded, investigated, coordinated, and contributed to the investigation, adoption, permanent marker, and remembrance ceremonies of Matea. Next Tuesday, May 21st, we will hold a memorial for Matea. Reverend Valencia will be leading the memorial and providing a prayer and reflection for Matea. On May 18, 1966, CCT Airman Second Class Andre Roland Guillet, 606th Air Commando Squadron, 1st Air Commando Wing was an observer aboard a 0-1F Bird Dog when the aircraft was shot down on over Laos. On Nov. 19, 1974, the Air Force posthumously promoted Andre to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt). His body was never recovered. HONORING OFFICER ASHLEY M. GUINDON: End of Watch: February 27, 2016 This year marked the 8th-year anniversary of fallen Prince William County Police Officer, Ashley Guindon. She was one of three officers who responded to a home in Woodbridge for a reported domestic altercation. Unbeknownst to the officers, the suspect had already killed his wife inside the residence. Upon contacting the suspect at the front door, he suddenly and without warning, pulled out a firearm and opened fire, striking all three officers. Additional responding officers took the suspect into custody without further incident and immediately rendered aid to the wounded officers. All three officers were taken to an area hospital where Officer Guindon died because of her injuries. The other two officer were critically wounded. Officer Guindon was sworn-in the day prior on February 26, 2016. This incident was the first call Officer Guindon responded to that evening. Officer Guindon was destined to wear the badge, but her service to her community began long before her days as a police officer. She assisted the Marine Corps Mortuary Affairs Office while serving in the Reserves, worked as a pre-hire with #PWCPD Special Victim's Unit, and volunteered extensively with the Suicide Prevention Program. Ashley Guindon was the only daughter of Sharon Nowack Guindon and the late David Guindon. You sacrificed your life protecting our community and your courage and service will never be forgotten. 12 May 2012 Corporal McCarthy and Lance Corporal Davies were killed by small arms fire while deployed as part of a Police Advisory Team to attend a meeting at the local Afghan Uniform Police headquarters near Patrol Base Attal in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province. Corporal Brent John McCarthy was born into a Service family on 18 February 1987 in Hannover Germany. At a very young age he returned to the Midlands of England where he attended Lilleshall Primary School and Orleton Park School in nearby Wellington. He was staunchly proud of the area and apart from the early years of his life, Priorslee, Telford was where he called home. Following school he worked in a number of jobs before committing himself to a Service life with the Royal Air Force in August 2008. Following his training at RAF Halton and the Defence College of Policing and Guarding at Southwick Park he began his career within the Royal Air Force Police. He was a man of many talents and diverse interests including football, playing drums in a band and representing the RAF at hockey. He was assigned to RAF Brize Norton in July 2009 where he volunteered to deploy with 174 Provost Company, 3rd Regiment Royal Military Police as part of the Theatre Provost Group. During his pre-deployment training Corporal McCarthy showed an aptitude for mentoring and was a natural choice to embed with the Welsh Guards as part of the Police Mentoring Advisory Group. Corporal McCarthy leaves behind his father John, mother Sarah, sister Jodie, his partner Sarah and his niece Miajay and nephew Kyron. #Todayin 2011 Marine Nigel Dean Mead from Lima Company, 42 Commando Royal Marines was conducting a cordon and search operation, partnered with the Afghan National Security Forces, of compounds suspected of being associated with improvised explosive device facilitation in the Loy Mandeh wadi in the Nad ‘Ali district of Helmand province. His Company landed in a helicopter and began to move towards the compounds of interest. Shortly afterwards, Marine Mead was fatally injured in an improvised explosive device blast. Marine Mead was born on 9 October 1991. He lived with his mother, Amanda, and sister in Carmarthen. He studied at Queen Elizabeth High School in Carmarthen until he joined the Royal Marines. He joined the Royal Marines on 27 October 2008, aged 17. It was Marine Mead’s first employment after leaving school, and he enjoyed the demanding rigour of the Royal Marines. He passed fit for duty as a Royal Marines Commando on 3 July 2009, as an original member of 977 Troop. He was the youngest marine to pass out from his troop. On completion of training he joined 8 Troop, Lima Company, 42 Commando, based in Plymouth. He was involved in a number of high tempo and demanding tactical training exercises, including a two-month amphibious deployment to the United States. He also enjoyed wider training activities such as mountain training. He completed the full pre-deployment training package for operations in Afghanistan and in addition the long range rifle course. Marine Mead loved his friends and family and thoroughly enjoyed his time in the Royal Marines. #Todayin 2009 Marine Jason Mackie of Armoured Support Group Royal Marines was killed when his vehicle struck an explosive device in the Basharan area of central Helmand, Afghanistan. The explosion killed Marine Mackie instantly. At the time of his death Marine Mackie was serving as a Viking All-Terrain Vehicle Operator in 3rd Armoured Support Troop of the Armoured Support Group, Royal Marines. Marine Mackie was born in Harare in Zimbabwe and moved to Oxford in 2002. He was 21 years old and joined the Royal Marines in June 2007. Following successful completion of Royal Marine Recruit Training and the Commando Course he joined 40 Commando Royal Marines based in Taunton where he initially served as a Rifleman. He then underwent the Armoured Support Operators Course, qualifying him to operate the Viking All-Terrain Vehicle. In September 2008 he joined the Armoured Support Group Royal Marines and completed pre-deployment training before deploying on operations to Afghanistan in November 2008. It reminds us why we run and highlights the struggle of preemies like Rylee who start their lives in the NICU. RYLEE’S STORY: It was the evening of Wednesday, August 15, 2007, when Jessica’s water broke. She was only 32 weeks into her pregnancy. There was only time to grab a few personal items and rush to the hospital. Upon arrival, the doctor immediately attempted to stop Jess’s labor. After much effort, the doctor said, “she is coming.” At 2:24 pm, on August 16, 2007, Rylee Rae Vinson was born. She arrived 7½ weeks premature, but came out kicking and screaming like any healthy baby. Rylee was 3 pounds, 14 ounces. Everyone was confident that she would be fine – she was a perfect angel. The nurses immediately transported her to the NICU for oxygen supplementation. Unfortunately, two days later, the neonatologist informed us Rylee needed to be put on a ventilator. On her third day of life, the doctors felt that she had severe lung complications, and they transferred her to a different NICU with a better infant ventilator. An ambulance transported Rylee to a different hospital for additional specialized care, including blood transfusions, tests, and x-rays. Wires and machines held her little life together for eight days, and we were there for every single moment. Sadly, Rylee lost her brave fight and became an angel in heaven. To honor Rylee’s memory, we began the Rylee’s Run 5k – to honor and help babies who battle these types of complications. #Todayin 2006 Private Joseva Lewaicei, 25, and Private Adam Morris, 19, both of 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, died as a result of injuries sustained from a roadside bomb at approximately 2345hrs local time in Basra City, Southern Iraq. Private Joseva ‘Lewi’ Lewaicei (pronounced ‘Lewethi’), was born on 29 April 1981 in Lautoka, Fiji. Lewi grew up in Fiji but decided early on, like many of his friends, to join the British Army. He joined 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, known as ‘The Poachers’, in May 2002 at the age of 21. Since then he served as a rifleman in Afghanistan between June and October 2003 as part of the enduring ISAF commitment and for two years in Ballykelly, Northern Ireland on a roulement tour. He also served in Jordan and Iraq, particularly enjoying the amount of time he spent in helicopters on both occasions. Members of his platoon will remember him fondly as a reliable and professional soldier as well as being someone who could make them laugh. He was the first Fijian to join the Battalion, and was planning to take some of his friends to the South Pacific to show them his home, Paradise Island. He was proud of his job in the Army and his efficient style was an example to others. He was good company; his colleagues described him as the soul of the platoon. He leaves behind a daughter in Fiji. Universally popular he will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues. Private Adam Peter Morris, nicknamed ‘Borris’, was born on 24 September 1986. He lived in Leicester with his mother Linder and attended the local college before joining the British Army at the age of 17. He was single. Private Morris completed his basic training at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick in 2004. He then joined C Company 2 Royal Anglian in Northern Ireland, serving as a rifleman during a two-year roulement tour in Ballykelly. Despite being a junior soldier he had already been identified as having great potential. His colleagues anticipated that he would make Platoon Sergeant at the very least. He was noted for his sheer professionalism and reliability, and on a recent tactics and leadership course he passed out as best student. Whilst exercising in Jordan he took over the role of a non-commissioned officer where he rose to the challenge and acquitted himself with composure. It’s been 18 years, today and I can remember that morning like it was yesterday. It was a beautiful, sunny day. A perfect morning. Really don’t have the words to sum it up.
