Paddy straw residue burning is a significant issue in Punjab, affecting air quality. The Punjab Government is addressing this through in-situ and ex-situ crop residue management methods. In-situ management involves using Crop Residue Management (CRM) machines like Super Seeder and Happy Seeder. However, these machines are fuel-intensive, time-consuming, and require powerful tractors, increasing operational costs for small farmers. To mitigate these challenges, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) developed the Surface Seeder. This new machine consumes less fuel, operates with less powerful tractors, and reduces operational costs. In its first year, 1,129 units were distributed to farmers, cooperative societies, and panchayats. The Punjab Air Quality Reforms team gathered feedback through field visits and telephonic surveys from over 50 farmers, 6 panchayats, and 15 cooperative societies, with additional surveys involving around 700 farmers and 620 cooperative societies. The majority of respondents reported positive experiences, citing reduced fuel costs, lower irrigation water demand, and improved time efficiency, without impacting seed germination. These findings, along with suggested product improvements, have been reported to the Chief Secretary's office and will be forwarded to PAU for incorporation in the next harvesting season to enhance the machine's usability and adoption. #StubbleManagement #PunjabAgriculture #NationBuilding #SocialImpact

The Punjab government has unveiled the details of its ambitious Punjab Kisan Card initiative, aimed at providing much-needed financial support to the farmers of the region. This initiative, which surfaced on Friday, promises to be a game-changer for small-scale farmers. Under the program, farmers possessing less than 12.5 acres of agricultural land will be eligible for the Kisan Card. Each cardholder will have access to interest-free loans of up to Rs150,000 per season, intended to ease the financial burden associated with crop production. In its initial phase, 500,000 Kisan Cards will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. The project, with a total cost of Rs75 billion, will be managed by the Bank of Punjab (BOP), which will oversee the distribution of the cards. Farmers can register for the scheme online. To participate, farmers will need to pay a processing fee of Rs1,000 per acre. The loans provided can only be used for purchasing seeds and fertilizers, which must be bought from registered BOP dealers. Currently, 10,000 dealers have been registered to support this initiative. Farmers must repay their loans in order to qualify for subsequent seasonal loans, ensuring the sustainability and continuity of the program. Wheat Procurement Season Starts in Punjab! Tomorrow, farmers can start applying for bardana via the Bardana App, a key step in this year’s wheat procurement process. The app will be open for applications from April 13 to 17, with bardana distribution starting on April 19. 🗓️ Wheat purchases kick off on Monday, April 22, after bardana is issued. All farmers who apply will undergo verification by PITB and Punjab Land Record Authority, ensuring a smooth and fair process. A confirmation message will confirm eligibility, and bardana will be issued on a first-come-first-served basis. 📍 With 393 procurement centers set up across Punjab, all preparations are complete at the district level. Farmers will receive Rs3900 per maund for their wheat, plus an additional Rs.30 per 100 kg for delivery charges. 🛡️ To support small farmers, only those with up to 6 acres are eligible for bardana.
