Image 1: #spottedlanternfly #nymphs #Lycormadelicatula #Tinicum #JohnHeinzNationalWildlifeRefuge #NationalWildlifeRefuge #Philadelphia #refuge #iphonephoto #km324 — Notes: “The spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula, is an invasive species to the United States, first discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014. It was originally from China and southern Asian countries such as India. It is likely to become a serious agricultural pest without natural enemies to keep populations low. It was accidentally introduced into South Korea in 2006 and has spread dramatically to become a major agricultural pest, especially for grape production. — The risk of spread in the northern US was once believed to be low due to cold winters. More recently, however, many eggs and newly hatched nymphs have survived the winter.” — “The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is a 1000-acre (4.05 km2) National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia and Tinicum Township, Pennsylvania. Adjacent to Philadelphia International Airport, the refuge is designed to the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania. Established in 1972 as the Tinicum National Environmental Center, it was renamed in 1991 after the late H. John Heinz III, who helped preserve Tinicum Marsh. — The refuge has five varied habitats: freshwater tidal marsh, impounded water, woods, meadow and field. The diversity of such habitats in such a concentrated area make it a natural magnet for all forms of wildlife. In addition to the above-mentioned there are a wide variety of fish species that can be found in both, Darby Creek, the lifeblood of Tinicum Marsh, as well as the 145 acre (0.6 km2) impoundment and the smaller, Hoy's Pond. They include brown bullhead, channel catfish, crappie, carp and small striped bass that utilize the wider expanses of Darby Creek, just before its confluence with the Delaware River, in the earlier stages of their development. The fields and meadows provide open areas where wide arrays of insects including several species of butterflies can be found foraging the dozens of species of wildflowers.” (Images in series taken today with phone… Camera photos later.)

The aftermath… Which do you prefer, B&W or color? The geese have migrated north, leaving behind nothing but feathers. They were previously placed in a separate superfamily, Hesperioidea; however, the most recent taxonomy places the family in the superfamily Papilionoidea, the butterflies. They are named for their quick, darting flight habits. Most have their antenna tips modified into narrow, hook-like projections. Moreover, skippers mostly have an absence of wing-coupling structure available in most moths. More than 3500 species of skippers are recognized, and they occur worldwide, but with the greatest diversity in the Neotropical regions of Central and South America.” — “Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterized by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. Prickles can also occur all over the plant – on the stem and on the flat parts of the leaves. These prickles protect the plant from herbivores. Typically, an involucre with a clasping shape similar to a cup or urn subtends each of a thistle's flower heads. The typically feathery pappus of a ripe thistle flower is known as thistle-down.” (Images in series taken today with EOS…)

It is characterized by its orange colour above with five black dashes near forewing base and several irregular black dashes at the base of the hindwing. In addition, two rows of black crescents run along the edges of the wings. Below, the forewing is yellowish orange with black marks similar to the upperside, with a few silver spots on the tip of the wing. The hindwing is reddish brown with silver spots on the base and middle of the wing. A broad yellow band and silver triangles are the most notable qualities on the wing, next to the brown margin. Females tend to be darker than males and individuals from the western reaches of this species range tend to be brighter orange. Similar species include the Aphrodite fritillary (Speyeria aphrodite), the Atlantis fritillary (Speyeria atlantis) and the northwestern fritillary (Speyeria hesperis). It is distinguished from the Aphrodite and Atlantis fritillaries by a wide light submarginal band on the hindwing and instead of black spots, black dashes form on the margins of the forewing.” (Images in series taken today with EOS…)

Image 1: #PatuxentResearchRefuge #NationalWildlifeRefuge #Refuge #cashlake #laurelmd #waterlillies #water #iphonephoto #km324 — Notes: “The Patuxent Research Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States, established in 1936 by executive order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is the only National Wildlife Refuge in the country established to support wildlife research. With land surrounding the Patuxent and Little Patuxent Rivers between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland, the refuge has grown from the original 2,670 acres (10.8 km2) to its present size of over 12,800 acres (52 km2) and encompasses land formerly managed by the Departments of Agriculture and Defense. Throughout decades of change, Patuxent's mission of conserving and protecting the nation's wildlife and habitat through research and wildlife management techniques has remained virtually unchanged. — About 1,100 species of vascular plants have been reported on the refuge. — Patuxent Research Refuge supports a wide diversity of wildlife in forest, meadow, and wetland habitats. The land is managed to maintain biological diversity and to protect and benefit native and migratory bird species. During the fall and spring migrations, many waterfowl species stop to rest and feed. Over 270 species of birds occur on the refuge. Bald eagles are occasionally seen feeding on the refuge. Increasing forest fragmentation in the area caused by urban development has damaged many populations of neotropical migratory birds. The refuge is one of the largest forested areas in the mid-Atlantic region and provides critical breeding habitat and wintering habitat for these species…” (Images in series taken today with phone…)

There’s a magical place where the freshwater of the Nisqually River flows into the Puget Sound. In 1974, this area was protected from development and turned into a wildlife refuge. The diverse habitat includes at least 250 species of birds and other wildlife including: insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. Of course, we busted out our biggest pair of binoculars so people knew we meant business. Seriously though, we could not get enough of this place and all its beauty. Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge May 2024 . Got out last week for a few minutes and shot Great Swamp in New Jersey. Tons of wooden paths and a pretty great place for wildlife. I had a 35mm on me, which is a format I rarely shoot. On Vacation Day 5, I headed up to the Olympic Peninsula to view Hurricane Ridge. Thankfully the snow was at the top, but not on the drive up. This road is often closed due to snow and had closed just the week before my trip. The views from the top are nearly 360* and include mountains, valleys, ocean views, and more! The elevation is 5,242 feet above sea level. For comparison, Mt. Baldy in SoCal is at 10,064 feet. There was a lodge at the top with gifts and food, but it burned down in May 2023. The structure was a complete loss. I only saw the former pad of the building. Forget me nots (adorable blue flowers) were in full bloom in Olympic National Park. Fun fact: a cool evolutionary trait for these flowers is that the center is yellow... until it is pollinated and then it fades to white. As I headed back down the mountain (another 17 miles!) I was looking for a place to camp. I landed at Dungeness Spit, WA. It was both a Clallam County park facility and adjacent to a National Wildlife Refuge. My goal was to be as north as possible and as dark as possible. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had determined the likelihood of Washington seeing the northern lights was extremely high. In fact, the display would be the best in 30 years.! Stay tuned for pictures from the unexpected Bucket List #2 item: the aurora borealis. #Camping #Camp #CampLikeAGirl #PacificNorthwest #Nature #Outdoors #Beaches #StateParks #NationalParks #Mountains #WAStateParks #PacificOcean #OlympicNationalPark #NationalWildlifeRefuge

Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge in the Choccolocco range of Alabama has a distinct connection to several other national wildlife refuges, such as Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Colorado and Big Oaks in Indiana, in that they are all former military training locations now given over to conservation. Indeed, Mountain Longleaf still abuts Fort McClellan, a decommissioned US Army installation now used by the Alabama National Guard. I’ve spent several weeks at Fort McClellan, ironically not during my time in active service, but while undergoing historic weapons instructor certification training for the National Park Service. Mountain Longleaf is among the more recently designated national wildlife refuges (ostensibly to protect the endangered longleaf pine tree), resulting in very little infrastructure or development (apart from one kiosk). I hiked the Smokey Mountain Loop Trail, the one (and only) trail recommended on AllTrails, which was a good little workout, but was heavily rutted with heavy machinery tracks. I did see one turkey and another larger bird (hawk perhaps), but neither the trail nor the nearby Moorman Lookout offered much of a view of the Talladega National Forests or foothills of the Appalachians. Location: Alabama Size: 9,015 acres Rating: *1/2 (one and a half stars out of five) #mountainlongleafnationalwildliferefuge #nationalwildliferefuge #mountainlongleaf #nwr #wildliferefuge #fortmcclellan #parksigns #refuge #usfws #usfishandwildlifeservice

So originally, I planned on posting a shot of a Caracara down at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge but after hitting a blind at Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, I ended up catching some pretty close shots of this young feral hog and its farrowing mother out swamped and covered in the mud. Usually Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge it’s filled with mosquitoes, deer flies and horse flies and bug spray doesn’t make any difference. It’s bad enough to the point that you can’t really walk in trails or get out of a car for a long time, but oddly enough they weren’t as bad today so I hit the blind and as soon as I did, hogs were out in the mud pretty late into the afternoon. When I first saw them I thought it was one hog on its back but as soon as i zoomed in, the smaller one got up. Camera used & Lens: Canon Rebel T7, Sigma 150-600mm contemporary, taken at 600mm. A Banded Water Snake moves through an area of open water. This North Carolina wildlife refuge contains a rare type of wetland know as “pocosin” derived from the Native American word meaning “swamp on a hill”. Comprised of lakes and open water that connect to Albemarle Sound along with peat bogs and upland pine forests. It is the winter home to hundreds of thousands of birds along with being home to one of the highest concentrations of black bear.
