The history of the old coal mining town of Madrid, New Mexico, goes back to the late 1890s, when a huge, 7-story coal breaker (pic 5) was constructed, and the town was built to house the miners and their families. Built by the company, the town was a “Company Town,” which provided everything from accommodations, schools, and a fully equipped hospital. Some 2500 people called Madrid their home during the towns heydays. After the operations of the mine ceased in the 1950s, the town became a ghost town for a few decades until some cabins were rented by artists and craftsmen, who wanted to live in the mountains. Since then, more and more artists and people have moved to Madrid and it has become a busy mountain community of some-300 people again. A strange vibe tonight here in Tucumcari, New Mexico. I've tried to find words for this evening, but I can't think of the right ones to express myself. Sometimes it's like that, the going gets weird, what can you say about it? Often nothing, sometimes something, but that something often isn't the right thing. How can you win? I fell in love with Tucumcari last August, when a friend and I were on Route 66 for the first time, looking for America. We did find it, but I yearned for more. And, even more than that, I needed to find myself but I've been in the process of that for years, seemingly farther from the original point and worse off than I started. So, I'm still out here, doing this thing that I do. A fine film once made reference to this as "going Kerouac on everyone's ass". I watch friends fade away, I watch people I know get married, have kids, live "normal" lives and I'm still out here on the road, searching. For what, I don't know. Maybe I'll know it when I see it, maybe I'll just keep searching for something that isn't there, or maybe I'll miss it, thinking there's something better. I think I've crossed all of those lines at this point. Pondering life here in Tucumcari on a Saturday night, it's what I do. Tonight, though, I get to do it at one of my favorite places in the world, the Motel Safari. WORK-IN-PROGRESS...Fort Union Apache dancer--I worked on the vest or "bib" decoration yesterday, as well as some of the other adornments or accessories she's wearing. The color is reading a little too warm here, but you get the gist. Interesting post I saw this morning about disgruntled Instagram users, primarily artists on that post, quitting Instagram altogether and switching to a platform called Cara. Many are fed up with the impossible algorithms on Instagram that prevent their posts from gaining any traction. However, that is not the only problem plaguing this kind of social media platform. It's only as good as how users actually use it, and there are way too many "one-way-streets" on Instagram. Mutual engagement helps EVERYONE. A new world vulture, the California condor is another conservation success story. In 1987, the condor became extinct in the wild when the remaining 27 wild individuals were intentionally captured in order to preserve the species. Through captive breeding at california zoos, the number of condors soared and were able to be reintroduced to Arizona, Utah, and California – however they still remain one of the rarest birds in the world. One of the major factors that led to the condor decline was lead poisoning from consuming prey containing bird shot. This is such a problem for wild condos still that the Condor Recovery Center at Oakland Zoo treats condors that are ill from lead poisoning. Incredibly rare both in the wild, and on our shelves, this California condo is from Hudson Sandy. The beautiful sloping body is carved from black marble and the bright head and neck are from coral. Hudson has inlaid turquoise eyes that construct beautifully with the red coral, and his every stunning attention to detail is present here in the careful incised lines of the feathers beak.
