英のSF作家H.G.ウェルズの小説「宇宙戦争」が1978年にレコード化されました(実はつい最近まで映画のサントラだと思ってました)。この2枚組LPは英で大ヒット。なんでも2枚組ながら英チャート史上32位の売り上げを記録したアルバムなんだそう。 アルバムからは素晴らしいストリングス・アレンジのこの曲がシングル・カットされ、全英最高位5位のヒットとなり、米では47位まで上昇しています。 この曲をはじめ、アルバム全体をメインで作詞したのはゲイリー・オズボーン。聞き覚えのある方も多いと思いますが、70年代初めにポール・ヴィグラスと組んだデュオ、ヴィグラスとオズボーンとしてこの曲でデビュー、日本でも「秋はひとりぼっち」の邦題がつけられヒットしました(米ではB面扱い)。75年以前の洋楽を知らない私は、20年ほど前に某Yのつく掲示板のAT40のスレッドで教えていただきました。 78年の「僕の小さなわがまま」を最後にエルトン・ジョンとバーニー・トーピンの共同作業が中断した時期、作詞を担当したのはゲイリーでした。「パートタイム・ラブ」「ブルー・アイズ」以前取り上げた「愛しのクローエ」…「リトル・ジニー」はこの時期唯一の全米トップ3ヒットでしたが、エルトンは「バーニーとのコラボが中断して素人同然な人と組んだ曲だけど、ヒットしたおかげでキャリアが続いた」と言っていたそうで、バーニーの歌詞に慣れ過ぎてゲイリーの歌詞がしっくりこなかったんですかね。それにしても酷い言い方。エルトンらしいですけど。 In 1978 the classic Sci-Fi novel The War Of The World, written by H.G. Wells, was recorded in 2LP. It was a big hit in UK and is ranked the 32nd biggest hit album in UK chart history as of this post. Forever Autumn was culled from that album and became number 5 hit in UK (number 47 in US). This song was co-written and originally recorded by the duo Vigrass & Osborne (consisted of Paul Vigrass and Gary Osborne) in 1972 and hit in UK and also in Japan (B-side to Men Of Learning in US). Gary began writing lyrics for Elton John after Ego, then-last single written by Elton and Bernie Taupin, in 1978. He wrote the lyrics of Part-time Love, Blue Eyes, Chloe and lone US top3 hit for Elton in this era, Little Jeanie. But their collaboration didn't last long. ELTON JOHN with ‘Jump Up!’ (1982) Believe it or not, over the past 40 years, I have never owned this album in any form. I was a 70’s ELTON fan through & through and dismissed most of his 80’s output as overproduced dreck. (I know, snob much?!) As a result, that ghastly cover was so overtly 80’s in its cheap attempt at making ELTON hep to the 80’s kids, I resented the scent of desperation. Well, several weeks back, there it sat in the bins at @recordsafari_la forlornly looking-up at me, nay, CHALLENGING me to finally give it a shot. After all, it was only $3 bucks! AND it had the original hype sticker for ELTON’s excellent JOHN LENNON tribute song, ‘Empty Garden’. AND it was a Promo. AND, I never realized it also contained another ELTON favorite, ‘Blue Eyes’. So, yeah, for $3 bucks? How could I not??? Well, I’m pleased to say, it ain’t half-bad! Granted, there are a few clunkers. (Hmm, wonder why he never plays ‘I Am Your Robot’ in concert?! 😜) And only half of the songs feature longtime lyricist BERNIE TAUPIN in the mix. (And yeah, BERNIE touts this album as ‘apart from ‘Empty Garden’, it’s a terrible, awful & disposable album!’) But it’s great to hear ELTON still hitting his higher falsetto notes with youthful vigor & vitality (before his Disney 90’s when every vocal dropped way deep & got all staccato in their delivery.) PETE TOWNSHEND guests on rhythmic acoustic guitar on ‘Ball & Chain’ as does former WINGS drummer, STEVE HOLLY, on ‘Ball & Chain’ & ‘I Am Your Robot’ and TOTO’s JEFF PORCARO on drums throughout. This is the kind of album that’d sound great on a cassette cranked in your bright yellow SONY Walkman while roller-bladin’ along at the beach. Produced by the great CHRIS THOMAS, it’s bright, positive & poppy. A very pleasant $3 dollar surprise indeed. Take it away, Reg! Il disco, un concept album sul "lontano ovest americano", fu anticipato dalla hit estiva "Io ho te", che venne presentata in anteprima ad 'Azzurro '83'. Il 45 giri si posizionò in breve tempo alla decima posizione dei singoli più venduti in Italia. Good 'songwriting' times in Wales! Ahhh a flashback photo of #ritacampbell's fun and exciting TIG Summer Songwriting retreat 2019! - held at the stunning Monnow Valley residential recording studio in Monmouth, Wales where the likes of Oasis did their thang! It was gr8 to be joined by hit songwriters to the stars, Tim Fraser (Tina Turner, Billie Myers, Lulu ) and Gary Osborne (Elton John, Gary Barlow, The Righteous Brothers) In the photo, we were anticipating receiving feedback from songs written so far within the teams Rita cleverly put us together with. I looooved hearing their stories that had us erupt in laughter at the dinner table 😂 yet it woz sooo encouraging to get their feedback and I know they were interested to see if I ignored their advice ( as they said a few do ) and kept in how I sang the word ' Today'; 'no one goes around saying ' Too..day I...' said Gary :-)... and although I agreed, it gave me gr8 pleasure to give a little demo of the #Oasis band song..Wonderwall " Today..is gonna be the day"..we all had a chuckle and he was like "Wot do I know"😂. However we did listen to much of their useful valuable advice.Tim mentioned he heard elements of #Tinaturner in ma voice which I have heard others say b4 as well as a few other artists; it was an enlightening wonderful experience that re-ingnited my songwriting flow! Хитовый потенциал альбома тоже оказался разделён: двумя "ударами" основного трек-листа альбома стали инструментальная Song For Guy и Madness, а в списке бонус-треков переиздания альбома на CD мы находим яркую композицию Ego, которая первоначально вышла несколько раньше альбома. Основа альбома выдержана в более умеренном настроении. Музыкальное повествование идёт последовательно, и, как мне кажется, основные удачи пластинки смещены на вторую сторону. Например, там живёт прекрасная композиция Shooting star, которая, безусловно, делает честь этому альбому. Безупречный стиль и элегантность оформления заслуживает похвалы едва ли не большей, чем сам альбом. Фотографии, использованные в оформлении, действительно весьма удачные. Обычно артисты, украшающие обложки своими фото имеют риск проиграть эту битву - что уж говорить, это происходило и с самим Элтоном! - но в 1978 году победа за внимание слушателя была одержана.

Elton John - A Single Man (1978) Spinning this while doing some reorganizing to the collection. I think it’s a bit of an underrated record in Elton’s discography, and while it’s not perfect by any means I’ve come around to it in recent years. It was his first without Bernie Taupin as a lyricist, and his first since his debut to not be produced by Gus Dudgeon, but it’s not nearly as bad as one would suspect given the circumstances. It kinda expands on the disco and prog pop sounds he was exploring on previous album “Blue Moves”, with varying degrees of success. And while it does kinda get off to a slow start, some of the songs are still pretty good, I quite like “It Ain’t Gonna Be Easy”, “Shooting Star” and “Song For Guy”, and I think “Madness” is an overlooked gem in Elton’s career... one of my favorite songs he’s ever done. Album ist. Darin zu finden ist grundsolider Mainstream-Elton-Sound, der sich in drei Kategorien unterteilen lässt: Fetzig-poppig, Ballade mit Klavier-Power und – in der Minderheit – leicht bluesige Nummern.
