Who remembers these? In the beginning, Myron Barnstone started all his students off by sketching the original Perrier bottle to learn the underlying structure and basic building blocks of design. When the company altered the design to accommodate a twist top, the original bottles became collector’s items and are increasingly difficult to find. Drawings. Ink on paper. Drawings that have been cut up and reassembled with other ones. I have stacks, created in brief blocks of time. (Documented with my iPhone). I draw from my surroundings - literally. Objects, tools, graphic shapes, industrial design and shapes found in nature - all become drawings, like blueprints, for my larger works. I’m trying my hand at #fraktur , except not really the big black calligraphy but more the folk art of the decorative work that goes with and around the text. This is my first effort and I have really enjoyed hanging out working on this design, it’s therapeutic. And it keeps me away from having my nose in a screen, so that’s a win. I probably do too much dopamine scrolling! I’m finding it really hard to keep the design flat, no overlapping images, depth, or perspective, and not too much realism. This isn’t my thing usually, my watercolor work since art school has all been pretty representational. However, this is a folk art of the #pensylvaniadutch which has suddenly captured my attention. So I’m here until I get bored which could be Tuesday or 2029, either way, I guess we will find out together. HANDS AT WORK, sketching ideas simply with pencil and paper and then refining them layer by layer till I have a neat enough image to work and digitise from. I always work on smaller manageable drawings as this suits my personal scale then I scan and scale up my images, if possible a print too up to full size, so I can fit to the actual pattern shapes of the garment properly. Each stage is a refinement of my initial freehand drawing that I often compare to visually thinking aloud. As things get more technical and my hands are clicking the computer mouse in multiple ways with all three buttons plus the roller, following my drawn lines which are now up on computer screen and into the software of my digital embroidery system. I will try my utmost to maintain the spirit and life of my original drawings and ideas. Here at this point the images on the screen can make that spirit die, suffocated almost, from the technical perfection required of instructing and operating such precision machinery...., until the first sew outs with real colour thread and fabric can bring it all back to life and it never fails to surprise and inspire me to the next creative stage and towards the finished commission of which this was one of four.
