Exchange Students | Intro to Printmaking Exchanges 2022-2024 May 3 - Aug 30 | School of Art Building, 2-D Display Case The theme for Daniella Napolitano’s Fall 2023 Intro to Print class exchange was “Going in Circles,” where each student created a design that would fit in an 8-inch circle. ⭕️ Every semester, students enrolled in Introduction to Printmaking participate in a class print portfolio exchange (sometimes collaborating with multiple classes). A print exchange is a tradition in printmaking that expresses the medium’s democratic and collaborative nature. Each student participating in the exchange agrees to follow specific parameters, including size requirements, a common theme, (sometimes) media limitations, and, most importantly, edition size. All students must print an edition large enough to supply one print for each participant and an extra for exhibition purposes. This exhibition highlights the contributions Introduction to Printmaking Students and faculty made to various print exchanges from 2022 to 2024. The techniques used vary from linocut to drypoint to stencil prints to monotype. Students pushed themselves to print hundreds of items, combine other media with print, and work sculpturally. The resulting installations range from whimsical to macabre. #throwbackthursday On April 7th, 2021, during my sophomore year at Phoenix College, I was awarded the Vanguard Award by international artist and PC alumnus Eric Fischl (@fischlstudio), as well as winning first place, both for 2-Dimensional Art with my oil and acrylic on canvas painting “Aquatic Mend” (2021). When I finished that piece, I felt proud and confident that I would be a part of the Vanguard exhibition, but I honestly wasn’t expecting to be chosen as the 2-dimensional Vanguard recipient for 2021. Not only did I receive those accomplishments, but I also sold the piece to a few of Fischl’s relatives. Consequently, I decided to exhibit my animation version of this piece for my senior BFA capstone exhibit at ASU in November 2023 to pay homage to my whole experience as a PC student. Standing next to me in the two moments is one of my former PC instructors and mentors, Jay Hardin (@jay__hardin), the art program director. I give him an exceptional thanks for making this happen to me since he gave me my first acquaintance in art composition guidelines and oil painting, which became my all-time favorite medium. MFA Thesis Exhibition April 4 to 13 | Step Gallery Opening reception | April 5 | 6 to 9 p.m. “felt, not seen…” is a solo MFA Thesis Exhibition by Danley Walkington that examines a loss of self, belonging and connection. Through imagery of old steel playground equipment once played on in rural Nebraska, Walkington’s home state, these objects become a metaphor of self; a stripping and caging of identity incurred from working eight years in Nebraska state prisons. Through the use of playground imagery, Walkington seeks permission to find themselves through play by arranging copiously printed imagery into large-scale wall installations and prints. As part of the exhibition, Walkington invites viewers to participate in an interactive element of gameplay, with the games Pass the Pigs and Mexican Train Dominoes, during the open reception and a second designated game night during the exhibition’s run. Gameplay engages and encourages connection with the artist and other participants. It is through play, memories, and nostalgia that Walkington seeks to feel true belonging and connection. The exhibition will screen artists' animations together with the objects used as props and characters, which will give the public the opportunity to appreciate the material and tactile phases of the animation processes and highlight the relationship of animation with both the plastic arts and everyday objects. Moreover, the selection will showcase devices that produce animated images that are not traditionally registered on film and are inspired in XIX century mutoscopes, zoetropes, flipbooks, and phenakistoscopes. Once the mold is poured into it can’t be reused, so it’s chiseled off of the pattern, meaning goodbye to Marvin the Mold.
