Low-E glass, also known as low-emissivity glass is used in residential and commercial buildings to control, reduce or direct heat radiation. Low-E glass can be used for windows and doors as well. Emissivity is the term defined as the amount of radiation emitted by surfaces in the form of heat. Unlike clear glass, Low-E glass results from a secondary process that adds a coating of normal glass. The coating is applied to a specified glass surface to reduce the effects of heat and ultraviolet (UV) light radiations. The coating is thinner than a strand of human hair, transparent and non-toxic.
The technology is designed in such a way that it regulates the temperature of the house. It works to keep precious heat energy inside your home in the winter or to block excess exterior heat from entering during the summer months. It also blocks harmful UV radiation and enables solar energy absorption. The glass blocks the infrared rays from entering the house and creates a balance between cold and warm environments.
